Another Great Trade!!

And a changing of this page name!! Friends, I had a great trade with cbc again on a group of NGC graded Walkers. As I pulled the old 1855-O MS62 half to send for the trade I showed my wife. "Get a good look as she's headed out for a trade". My wife just looked at me like I was stupid and said " The 1849 1c is mine and I want it out of the safe --- The rest are yours!!!" O-K --- so I changed the name on the member page and handed her the coin. What else was I to do. Well they are still he

Red spots on .9999 gold

What are they and can they be removed? Red spots on gold coins is a well know issue. It used to be thought that these were copper spots in alloyed coins. Well, 2008 Buffalos are essentially pure gold, yet they also frequently suffer from these spots. I have one in my possession with a spot near the top of the head (see pic). My questions: 1. How do these spots affect grading? 2. Can they be removed? 3. Does anyone have any experience with NCS removing them? To see old comment

Finally found a Icelandic 1933 25 Aurar to complete my collection

Paid twice the money but well worth it. On May 17th 2011 I mentioned that I needed a Iceland 1933 25 Aurar to complete my Kingdom Era collection. Well nearly two years later one showed up on Ebay. Its the only one I have ever seen raw or graded. Now my set is complete for the exception of the 1940 1 Krona and 2 Kronur in Proof,,,Which I mentioned that none excites in the royal mint collection according to Harry Spencer in his 1986 report of the Proof record of the royal mint ,,,I will not coun

Lowball proof platinum eagle...

PLEASE don't let your kids play with your US Mint products. (Or with this population...grandkids). I have had a recent very good run of modern coins purchased raw from eBay...mostly. I have found that if you buy platinum eagles in original mint packaging....from MOST sellers....they will grade 70 or at least 69. My luck changed recently when I bought a 2004 $25 proof and a 2006 W $50 burnished, from two different non-dealer sellers. In both cases the photos were distant and slightly blur

Lots of quarters - 1999 - 2013

I have lots of these including two complete mint sets (un- circulated) I started buying from Cable Shopping Network. I purchased two of their sets. Although I found a few problems they were more than happy to exchange coins with me. I also started collecting rolls of quarters. to flesh out what I already had. This is fun. I now have close to 150 quarters. I purchased another set from Littleton. They were supposed to be ms 60 or better. Bad news almost 98% had some type of ERROR on them. ie. We

modern comm's , Morgan dollars and peace dollars for sale Good morning fellow collectors, Now I know that someone will pipe up and say this is not the place to post this.. But I'm going to anyway so get over it. I find myself in a place in my collecting that makes me part with a few duplicates. A Major Disconnect--Paper Silver Value vs Physical Silver

Does the Wall Street "spot price" even matter any more? It just gets weirder and weirder by the day. Silver value as reported on comex/wall street -etc keeps dropping down toward $20 an ounce--dipping toward $22 today. Yet strangely, physical silver sales are hard to come by and in order to grab some physical silver the costs are closer to $30 an ounce--which is about a 25 to 30% fee per ounce! I understand that the big bullion dealers are trying to cut losses by making up for the drop in

This REALLY Bugs Me!

An Ebay seller trying to take advantage of an NGC "clerical error". As an 8 reales collector, I frequently browse the Ebay listings for these coins. Several months ago I saw a NGC certified 1783 Mo FM listed. Now, for those in the know, this is the rarest of the series and no graded examples are in NGC's or PCGS's census. The photos clearly show severe seawater damage over the assayers initials. I might admit that the second initial looks more like an "M" than an "F" but it would be easy t

A disapointing day

what I thought was a rare coin is a fake I found what looked like a 1959 no mint mark wheat cent a few days ago. with my trusty 7x lighted magnifying glass it looked good. however when viewed with my 100x microscope it was easy to see that it was a 1950 with a tail added to make it look like the rare 1959. now that my dreams of a new home and muscle car are dashed. I'll just have to keep looking and find that rare coin to make myself rich. who knows maybe my powerball ticket will pay off.

Burning both ends of the Candle

Proofs from the front and Circulated from the rear!! Friends, I know I said I was sending in the 70's for submission to get my mint sets rolling but.... I have been having a fun time catching up a few proof sets as I bid at lower than 50% and they keep winning. I will get around to sending off the 70's circulated but having a great time adding to the 20?? proofs right now. Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. COMPLETED A GOAL WAY EARLY

A great day for my registry points Today I entered 2 sets that NGC completed today one with 26 coins and another with 14 coins. I had set a goal of breaking the 500 mark by the end of this year. And I managed to do it in mid may. I am at this time setting a 496 in the registry standing, and I still have 4 silver mint sets and at least 2 dozen mint sets to have graded this year. I think I'll revise that goal to make it into the high 300's by renewal time in Jan 2014. In closing I'm a ve

NGC Coin of the Day 1867 Seated Liberty Quarter- NGC vs PCGS value

All I can say is WOW, someone really wanted that quarter NGC featured coin of the day on their Face Book page is an 1867 Seated Liberty quarter. I was looking through some auction records for this coin and came across something that made me go WOW. There is a NGC MS63 example of this coin that sold back in 2005 for $3220. Current value for this coin is $12,060 with a population of 2. In 2008 a PCGS MS63 example sold for $86,250. Current PCGS value is $9000 with a population of 4. All I c

2013 American Eagle West Point Two-Coin Silver Set

Buy Now or Buy Later? With over 138,000 sets already sold by the U.S. Mint it seems likely a very large number of 2013 American Eagle West Point Two-Coin Silver Sets will be sold. This won't be a rare coin in 70 condition. It seems like the most sense is to wait and buy the coins already NGC or PCGS graded. This will save the cost of getting the coins certified as well as related shipping costs. It also eliminates the chance a coin won't grade at 70. There should be plenty of perfect 70 coins

Happy Mothers Day, A Numismatic Tribute to Motherhood

Garys May coin of the month features a 2008 Latvian 20-Lats gold coin commemorating the 15th anniversary of the renewal of the Lats currency following Latvian independence from the old Soviet Union.   Though this coin commemorates Latvian Independence, it also celebrates motherhood by utilizing a 1922 design conceived by sculptor Teodors Zalkalns, but never used. Additionally, this coin has the distinction of being named the Coin of the Year in 2010 by Krause Publications. Krause Publications

GSA Hoard CC MSDs

Grades were posted for a 1881 CC and 1883 CC. And the results came back... A nice MS 64 for the '81 and a MS61PL for the '83. A little disappointed on the numerical grade for the '83, but it is Proof-like so that's nice. My first. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

The Raw Coin Submission Blues

When NGC decides to "Detail" your coins Well, my last submission of eight reales coins came home today. I had already seen the grading results online but the disappointment seems to have more impact when you have your box in hand. Slightly less than half got full grades -- my worst submission so far. These were mostly coins from Spanish auctions where I must rely on the pictures and catalog descriptions. I've learned to steer clear of "Rayitas" (scratches) and "Algo limpiar" (cleaned) so n

More Good Friends

This time with Roosies and Mint Sets! This week I received three Roosies from two good pals, Rick Young and Todd Henson. I had intended to use the 1967 MS67FT I bought from Rick in a mint set. However, as I searched for dimes to fill family member mint sets I stumbled across a top pop 1968 P MS67FT for one of my brother's Mint Sets on Todd's page and ended up trading him for that coin. That set (the 1968 set) now rests at number 2 in the rankings. I also received from Todd my aforementio

New Silver Eagles

Is the mint serious? Well first, my wife and I have sold our house and will be moving to Maryland on May 21st. We're very excited to be back closer to family.   Now, I just looked at the mint website to see when the two coin West Point Eagle set is going to be released. I was absolutely shocked at the price tag: $139!! I can't believe they're charging that much for two ounces of silver. I'm sure they'll have a good selling, but it will be awhile before I get them on the secondary mark

Silver American Eagle set

had I known I'd have fired up the BBQ I just completed my order for the new west point American Eagle set I logged on to the US Mint site at 11:58 and waited until 12:03 to try and place my order. very long story short at 12:51 I was able to complete my online order. I bet the poor people at the Mint received at least 10,000 orders in the first 45 min. well at least I know that sometime after 5/17/2013 I will receive my coins I just hope they look as great in person as they do in there cat
