Bring on the gold

Now I'm moving into sets. I have now added a few sets of gold all MS 70's I think I am going to shoot for some sort of set award. So I will add them in as soon as I can get them all in. Four sets of gold, the $50, $25, $10 and $5, of 2001, 2002, 2003, & 2008 to get me started. Some PCGS and some NGC. I am not sure which coin now is my favorite although my Ten Dollar Jamaica Proof 1974 is my favorite for playing Texas Hold 'em,as it is my favorite rum, 'Captain Morgan', although the Ric

End of an Era....Beginning of a new adventure!

Hello Collector's Society, been a little while since my last journal. It's been a time spent in turmoil after coming across some great silver Roosevelts. What I've been debating is the future of my collection, as I've lost most all interest in moderns for collecting. I still thoroughly enjoy the grading process and probably won't quite that part, but the clad dimes have lost their "luster" so to speak... The silver issues are quite a bit more intriguing and have a finite limit to the set, inst

Just a pic that made me think of another collector. Brian, First off you really need to shorten your name. It took a whole line to write it out. I was adding pics for the state quarters I got graded in Jan. this weekend and one gave me that ol "Out West" thinking. Of course your sets came to mind so I posted this pic for a good view. And then off to Baltimore and the "Show" No doubt, year in and year out heading down to Baltimore and the Whitman show in mid March is my favorite weekend of the year. To start with, the temperature is usually about 10 degrees warmer than Northern New Jersey, and my first glimpse of spring weather. Combine that with Coins, great food and drink what is not to like? I have been going over my favorite dealer web sites time and again in preparation for my arrival on Friday. The show actually start

75% and counting!

I might actually finish this set! I have been working on my 32-64 Washington quarter set for a few years now, hoping to finish maybe in the next year or so.I recently added a 1942S in MS66,bringing the set to 75% complete. As there are fewer coins now that I need to finish this set,it is increasingly harder to save my limited budget and not buy other coins that interest me!Oh well I am only human. I would also like to thank everyone who takes the time to view my sets,it means alot to me!

FEBUARY Top Pops at least for me...

As I stated in an earlier post I subbitted 117 coins to NGC for grading last month. Hello my Fellow collectors I hope this note finds you all in good health and high spirits. As I have stated in a post last month I subbitted 117 coins last month and I thought a few of you might want to see what I think were the highlights of those subbittions. All in all I'm very happy with all but 2 coins that came back in the dreaded purple slabs with just the word Details on them this kills me why cant

Starting Up!

Starting new collection for my wife. Hello One and All, You can see by my collection that I am a novice to Numismatist. I have a few coins within my collection but, I would like to work toward a collection for my wife. I've started on the series of Chinese 1oz. Panda coins starting from current date back to her birth year. She doesn't know that I'm doing this and I think that it would be a very nice gesture. I would like to make the whole collection MS69 or better. She always claims that I d

Final Franklin (NGC,that is)

NGC set is complete! About two years ago I decided to split my Franklin half dollar set by grading service. The criteria for Full Bell Lines is quite different at PCGS compared to NGC. Other than the 1953-S, my objective was to complete a NGC set in MS-64 FBL or better (the 53-S is virtually unobtainable in FBL). Last week, the last one appeared on ebay - a 1962-P in MS-64FBL. It's not exactly "rare" but NGC has only graded 63 of them, with 15 graded higher in FBL. It was only the sec

So Close!

... but just a half step too late! Just back from a show in Ft Worth... met some familiar faces, and a few new ones. It was a great show, and picked up a few choice items for my collection and the site. As I was chatting to one dealer, I learned that he had just sold a 1942 T1 NGC MS66 5FS Jefferson, which I have been looking for to finish out the nickel portion of my 1942 Mint set (as a memorial to my late mother). And I really groaned when I heard the price... $90 That would have been s

Underappreciated Type 2 Double Eagle With each new purchase for the Grandview Collection of Liberty Double Eagles in 2013, I plan to describe the coin and relevant background information with a journal post. Additional images of the coin and holder will also be provided in the journal. I may even post about interesting coins that have been in the collection for many years. Type 2 double eagles were minted in Philadelphia and San Francisco from 1866 until 1876. Carson City also minted Ty

and the real thing. Hello Friends, This past week I received a wonderful 2013 NGC PF70UC Silver Eagle and I've been thinking about taking photos for my registry and hadn't decided to post one to the journals but as it happened this morning while at work I noticed a bald eagle in a cottonwood tree scoping out a section of the Applegate River. The Steelhead are in the river right now and this eagle has the perfect perch to spot carcasses floating downriver that gather in an eddy right under

1st Purchase for newly started Buffalo Set

To paraphrase Horace Greeley "Go West, young man, go West and grow your coin collection with Buffalo Nickels" Hi Friends,I have just kicked off a new series for my Somerville Set Collection, as I begin my pursuit of Buffalo Nickels. The challenge and excitement of starting a new set opens up great opportunities for expanding my numismatic knowledge while pursuing a registry set that I can take great pride in assembling. NGC Registry Points

Points given are incorrect? I just entered my new presidential dollars to my competetive set and the registry only gave me 1 point (instead of 980) for each coin. I have descriptions and pictures included with the additions and I do not understand the problem. Has anyone had this happen before, and if yes, how was it reconciled. What I found on Freemansburg Ave.

A simple collector who lives on a simple road, with coins all but simple. Last Friday I traveled 100 miles to meet with a collector who sold me his definition of simplistics. He sold me part of his collection, a rather novice part but still applicable. Today I strolled through the material only to find that something was not right. Two coins were in labeled holders marked "1893/923 50c Costa Rica VF". They had the same exact labels, and I didn't know what it meant. I soon figured out it was a

Alittle help from my friends

Need to find the right refrence book Good afternoon my fellow collectors, I am in need of a good book that will teach me how to know the differance between a reg. coin and a coin with the varerties such as DDR FS-801. I am trying to complete my 1946 - 1964 Roosevelt dime collection I'm down to the varerties and I cant find them in my price range so I'm looking thur rolls and rolls of dimes trying to get lucky. The book I need should have photos and good discriptions. any help would be f

A case of the Mondays

With a silver lining We were wondering today if there was an extra full moon out. Our clients have been extra crazy today, so to speak. A few minutes ago, we had a client ask for some rolls of coin for their business. As I was about to hand him 4 rolls of dimes, I see a Mercury Dime reverse staring at me! I put it back saying that it looked a little short and gave him another roll. When he left, I ripped the roll open and it was a 1936. Not too shabby of a find. Now I'm kicking myse
