Will NGC make my 1990 no S cent better?
Long time collector, first time journal writer here. Over the past year or so I have had some interesting adventures in the attempted completion of my "100 greatest US modern coins" set. Actually, I should say attempted partial completion because this is one set that nobody may ever complete, due to the presence of several nearly unique coins on the list.
My latest acquisition is a bit of a gamble. I purchase a raw 1990 proof set with a "no s" cent
plus a Nook update
Well, if anyone has not noticed, I did some more set deletions the past week or so. One thing I am really wanting to do is get a good start on my Buffalo Nickel set. I really do not see it as a top grade set, but I would like to more or less complete it. In fact, my 5 free submissions will consist of some raw Buffalos I have, unless I decide to include 1 fairly nice Indian cent I have. I want the Indian for my wild west custom set. There are a lot of coins in the set, so som
Still have a lot learn but overall I am happy with the results
my previous journal I outlined my guesses at how my 6 coins would grade. The grades are back and I was right on 2, close on 2, and in the wrong hemisphere on the other 2!
1879 S Morgan, boy was I clueless, my guess MS63, came back UNC details OBV tooled cleaned. I thought I was good at identifying cleaned coins. I guess that mirror like finish was not original.
1955 Franklin Proof, my guess PF66, NGC PF66, came from a PCI holde
Buying all the new Silver Eagles
Every year it seens to be getting harder to buy the new Graded Silver Eagles released that year. There are the regulars and then there are the Anniversary, and then the (W) and then the (S) and then the "W" and then the "S" Reverse Proofs, Proofs and MS, 69's 70's and then whats next. Is there any way to keep up with them all? When do you buy? Right away or wait for product to get in excess snd the price to go dwn or up or whatever. I so confused. More Mo
After six-plus years...
If you have read my past journals, you probably know I have been trying to build a P-mint, MS64, cent through dollar 1890 set as a high school graduation present for my youngest son. Why 1890? He was born in 1990, and I thought it would be better to go 100 years early than just get him a 1990 set or a graduation year set.
You can do the math. Just finishing the set now is a bit late. He has not only finished college, but has a job. The problem was that 1890 half dolla
The Eagle has finally landed...
It has been a long time coming but I finally added an example of the small flying eagle 1 cent 1858 transitional design. I first became aware of the pattern in 1993 from Rick Snow's Flying Eagle and Indian Cent research masterpiece. There are 3 main patterns of the small eagle to collect ( some critics of the design say it looks more like a quail, or even a "sick" eagle falling from the sky). This one is Judd 204, with a "harp" or Ornamented shield combined with
Press through greese errors.....
So, Cleaned out the storage unit. Oh my gosh! thats right, right there in that red box! I forgot all about them. I bought a bag of the wisconsin quarters. I was sure I was going to find that low leaf error or even the high one; I only need one. Well low and behold, I bought 'p' and not 'd';...DAH...
So any way after going throught the bag we bought, we got errors!!! Yes were rich! retire now! never work again!!! Not really..
We found at least 20 of these pr
When you have only limited resources to devote to new purchases invariably you are confronted with some difficult decisions. This afternoon I was confronted with one of those tough choices.
When I found out that the Stack's Bowers was offering a 1905 NGC PF67 USA-Philippines Five Centavos in their August 2012 Philadelphia ANA World's Fair of Money - Internet Only Auction I started to drool.
The 1905 Five Centavos is a PROOF ONLY ISSUE with a mintage of only 471. This is the lowest mintage o

A few weeks back I submitted a 1986 S Prestige set for grading. I did it mainly for the Liberty half dollar and dollar. But boy what a fantastic suprise that awaited me as I entered the coins into my registry. The Liberty's both graded PF 69 UC but that was far from what came next. The 1986 S Jefferson nickel came back a great PF 70 UC with a full market value of $2500.00 I almost had a minor stroke, In my wildest dreams I would have never thought a 26 year old Jefferson n
Received my shipping email today
So I sent in 10 set for grading (20 coins). 13-69's and 7-70's were the results. Enough to make 3 70 sets. Wasn't impressed with the grades. But, I guess it could be worse. When I sent them in, they all looked perfect to the naked eye. So i will sell 7 sets and keep the 3 perfects.
So all i'm trying to say is. All the people presale 70 auctions on ebay. Be careful.

Both are the the 2nd Rarest but which one is the most collected
I have been doing my homework since the making of the 25th Silver eagle Set. Every month I would chart out the number of perfect 70's available especially on ebay, because that is where the most of these coins are sold.
Everything you may know about these 2 coins are completely backwards.
Mintage in NGC perfect 70 are as follows
Reverse Eagle is 18,668
S mintmark Eagle 20,004
I have been trying to figure which one is
Happy 53rd Statehood Anniversary (August 21, 1959) Hawaii!
Another investigation....
The Numismatist, May 1960 provides an ad with the details on the initial limited sterling striking of 2,500 serially numbered high relief Hawaii Statehood medals.
There are two varieties documented (Medcalf & Russell) and is based on the spelling of the island of Niihau on the obverse. Variety 2MS-2a was struck first with the NII HAU spelling error (space between the I and H). Variety 2MS-2 was struck
There was a lot of excitement when Teletrade announced that it was auctioning Philippine coins from the famous "Just Having Fun Collection". The auction which concluded last night had some very mixed results.
The "Just Having Fun" collection ranks among one of the finest USA-Philippine collections ever assembled. The "Just Having Fun" NGC USA-Philippines Type set was the top ranked set in its category from 2004 through 2010.
The "Just Having Fun" PCGS Registry Sets are even more spectacula
Who would choose this coin, send it to NGC, pay the associated fees, and be Satisified with this result.
Folks,
This journal entry is kind of a reaction to Allen's "ngc cencus ??" journal entry. In his Journal, Allen correctly states that modern high grade condition rarities are a risk at current prices because of the huge inventory of unopened mint packaged coins and pristine rolls existing in the hands of collectors and dealers.
I have recently purchased a coin with very little downsid
Offer here first before listing on auction
Greetings all. I just posted an ad for various coins I am selling in the Money Marketplace chat board. Give it a look see and if there is something you are needing to fill a slot get in touch with me. Much rather help out fellow collectors here at the CS if at all possible.
best,
Mike

!972 5c pf69 ultra cameo
So I noticed on a couple differant auction sights that quite a few 1972 5c ngc pf69 ultra cameo coins have been showing up for sale. Then I noticed that all the coins have the same first 7 numbers. Then I did some research to verify the ngc cerification numbers . so It looks like someone has cerified 85 of these 1972 5c pf coins and out of 50 numbers I verified Only 2 were pf68 ultra and the rest are 69 ultra. So lets just say about 75 of these coins are 69 ultra. Now
A EBAY steal
Usually I don't mention on here what I purchased or added to any of my collections. I have been searching for a 1969 S PF69 UC nickel for awhile that was affordable. There was one being auctioned on Ebay I noticed over this weekend. Starting bid at $139.00 with less than 24 hrs left and no bids. I bid $146.00 and hoped for the best. I am one of those that question paying too much for a modern coin. If I can't get a deal, then I just pass on it. Low and behold, No one else
confused
Sometimes I put a journal entry and it shows with discuss on chat boards- other times it does not- has anybody else experienced this? Do you know to fix that? thanks!

Three additions from the Heritage auction
My wife and I just signed on the dotted line to replace essentially all of the exterior of our house. So what did I do? I went overboard in the pre-ANA Heritage auction, of course.
Before getting into those details, I have a couple older notes: First, I had to skip the latest Baltimore show due to work, leading me to consider going to the ANA in Philly. Second, there was one more detail regarding my recent Heritage live on-line bidding problem. In th
A pic before the trip in for grading.
Friends, I did mention that I was doing a small submission this month. I have chosen the MS Roosevelt dimes for this shipment. I also finally filled out a submission for my 5 free graders which I used the 1949 toned mint set ( except for the quarter I sold to Jason). The free submission wasn't costly at only $30 for the total. The dimes submission is pricey but I think will be worth it in the end.
I was starting to prep the shipping package and remember
Today's Stack's Bowers auction had a number of very nice USA-Philippines coins including a 1905 NGC PF63 Peso that I was bidding on.
The 1905 Peso is a PROOF ONLY ISSUE with a mintage of only 471 coins making it the lowest mintage USA-Philippines Peso. The specimen that I was bidding on, Lot # 40716, had very attractive toning and was graded NGC PF63.
The Allen catalog price for a 1905 Peso in PF63 is $1100.00. Going into the auction my internet pre-bid of $900.00 ($1057.50 with buyer's
Received in trade from Six Mile Rick.
I came by this set via trade with Six Mile Rick for a handle full of State Quarter Proofs and MS coins. Really nice coins to get me started with the Mercs which I have been wanting to do for some time. I have two slots left to fill in this set (1943S and 1945 Micro S) before I can feel satisfaction again on completing a set.
Thanks Rick for a great trade.
Here is a parting shot of one of the coins.

One bought, one sold.
As I wrote in my last journal, I went to the ANA show yesterday. I left home at 6:15, hoping to make the Liberty Seated Collectors Club meeting at 9:00. I got to downtown Philadelphia just after 8. But while looking for cheap parking, I found myself crossing the Ben Franklin bridge into New Jersey. Despite that mistake, I was able to get turned around, parked, and to the meeting with a few minutes to spare.
The meeting had some of the usual content. But it also had an a
