Numismatic Detective - The Remember Pearl Harbor Pocket Coins

Here come my Japanese Zeros! There still is a lack of correct information about the "Remember Pearl Harbor" coins. These coins: 2M-379 (Copper); 2M-380 (Copper "Pat. Pending"); 2M-381 (Nickel) and 2M-382 (Sterling Silver), as identified in the Hawaiian Money Standard Catalog, 2nd Edition by Medcalf and Russell, 1991). The documented mintage: 2M-379/2M-380 10,000 minted 2M-381 5,000 minted 2M-382 Unknown minted A check of four reference books verifies the 10,000 and 5,000

1968 DDO FS-101 Roosevelt Dime NGC MS 65

Just returned after NCS conservation. Year: 1968 Grade: MS 65 Registry Points: 72 NGC Pop: 5/2 Purchase Price: Self Made Seems a paltry amount of points for a coin that only has ten graded examples at NGC. In all of my mint set searching I've found about a dozen 1970 DDR and a couple 1969 D/D coins, but this is the lone example of the 1968 DDO coin I've found. I've probably searched well over 150 mint sets to find this lone single coin. With only 2 coins graded higher and only 10 tot

GOODBYE DM MERRILL ASSOCIATES...

Hello Wissahickon Collection!!! It's time for a name change. My wife and I retired, and ceased operating the company more than a decade ago. As anyone who has formed and operated a business can attest, it becomes a major part of one's life. So when I joined the coin registry, it felt like a natural transition to transfer the company name to the coin collection. It has been a very successful strategy at weening me from the business. But now, and for some time actually, a name change refle

FS-101?????

Could it be a TOP POP Variety? Six Mile Rick and I see this as an FS-101. Take a look at the arrow points and though not completely obvious in the picture there is a second "D" to the east of the loop clearly visible under magnification. More opinions please. All of my Registry Sets are now 100% Illustrated and Described!

When I established my 2012 numismatic goals and objectives I set a goal of having an "Owner's Description" and image for 100% of the coins in my "Competitive and Custom Registry Sets". I am pleased to announce that as of last night this goal has been accomplished. All 125 coins in my "Competitive Registry Sets" have an "Owner's Description" and at least a low resolution image. In addition all of the coins in my "Custom Registry Sets" have an "Owner's Description" and image. Now that I have

My 1984 D arrived!

Now for the pic. Here she is, the coin I mentioned I traded for last week. She finally made her way home and into my set. Isn't she a beauty? She carries a 2169 point value. My set still resides at #8, for now, with 22969 pts and only 520 from 7th place. I expect to take that spot within the week. That is IF NGC holds off on any more point adjustments. We'll see what happens when the next trade is complete. Thanks for viewing and reading. Stay tuned! To see old comments for thi

Will my 75th Anniversary ASE Set ship today?

It shows my order as backordered until July 27 which is today! I hope to get an email stating that shipping happened today. Turns out NO! What are the chances of that? Very low! I hope to come home next week to find my set waiting for me on the step. I did receive an email on July 29 confirming shipment of my set. Today is July 31 and perhaps it will show up today but not likely. None of the tracking numbers seems to work at UPS so I can't follow it thru the system. To see old comments

1976 P Clad Type II Eisenhower

MS66 just arrived Howdy Friends, Researching my family tree is one of my favorite hobbies, next to coins of course. When I come across new information that I can attribute to a coin it's always a rush and today I found an interesting tidbit researching the Son's of the American Revolution (SAR) memberships in my family tree. I have a custom set called "My Heritage Set" that consists of coins I have dedicated to ancestors by date and or theme, so whenever I acquire a new coin that can be att

Another great trade underway!

Maybe I can share the details before the weekend. Hi members! Let me start by saying my 1984 D I spoke of last week is at the post office for me to pick up tomorrow (I missed it today). I should have pictures posted tomorrow night. This new trade in the works is with the same person I received that coin from and is for 3 outstanding Lincoln Memorials. One is a top pop and the other two are second pops, one an MS66 but with high value and the other is MS68RDP, second only to the single MS

Colorful 1936-D Mercury Dime MS 67 FB * (STAR)

WOW - Mercury Dimes Don't Get Much Nicer than this STAR Coin! I always love to find nice MS 67 FB or better Mercury "Winged Liberty Head" Dimes for my collection, but it is always nice to find one with the NGC coveted * (STAR). When I first started collecting I only looked for white dimes and ignored those with any sort of toning. Over the years I've come to appreciate the beauty of colorfully toned coins like this one. I think this picture says it all. To see old comments for this Journa

1972 D Roosevelt Dime NGC MS 67 FT

Superb coin with great luster! Year: 1972 D Grade: MS 67 FT Registry Points: 1,303 NGC Pop: Top Pop 8/0 Purchase Price: Self Made These early clad Roosevelts are difficult to find fully struck and even more so to find with decent luster. I come across many coins that have wonderful luster and/or toning, but generally speaking that's the end of the line as the quality usually isn't up to par. This coin was the exception, after removing it from an original mint set I was impressed wi

A stranger saved me from a $50 blunder!

Plus a valuable lesson-always check the coins very closely! This story is almost too embarrassing to share but hopefully it may help a fellow collector avoid the mistakes I made. Tuesday I received a message through my EBay account. It came from someone I did not know and as far as I know have never dealt with in the past. He/she suggested I take a closer look at the raw VF/EF 1889 S Morgan dollar I bought a couple of weeks ago. They pointed out that the coin I bought had the same marks at 9

Money Mecca

Currency Journal for July 25, 2012I posted this on the PMG registry today, but wanted to share with my coin collecting friends as well :)Being an avid coin collector, I have always wanted to tour one of the US Mint facilities. Not being close to any of them has made this a dream yet to be fulfilled. Having recently become a collector of US currency, it dawned on me that I live very close to one of the two BEP printing facilities, the BEP's Weste

re: 1628-58 India Rupee Mughal Empire KM-235.23

Asking for a closer picture Can anyone tell me something about this coin? Does it fit in any collections? I don't see it in under "World Coins" in Competitive Sets. Here is the Custom Set I put it under. http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinView.aspx?sc=181878 If it is really damaged? What are the markings on the side? This is the oldest coin in my collection and I know very little about it. I bought it in Kuwait. The man said he had it in his family for over 350 ye

Re-Shuffling My USA/Philippines Type Sets

Playing with the new "Filter Ranking" application can be really addicting. When I saw that my USA/Philippines Type Set ranked number one when viewed through the "NGC Coins" filter I began to wonder if I could build a 100% complete NGC set, with the coins that I already owned, without sacrificing the quality and eye appeal of my "All Coins" set. Before the re-shuffling my USA/Philippines Type Set had 25,623 Registry Points and ranked 2nd when viewed with the "All Coins" filter. The set conta

Off To Teletrade

and a Hoover medal picture for another CS member Well, I have done the dirty deed this afternoon. If you haven't noticed, my For Sale or Trade custom set is no more. I shipped all 70 some coins to Teletrade to be auctioned off. I'll be using the proceeds to pay off my credit cards and the remainder for coins. So if anyone wanted one of the coins, you'll have to bid on Teletrade. You can message me for details. Tonight I took some time to just browse through some custom sets. This was really

An old mans gift

Something really weird happened Something really weird happened, but it was also very nice.I live in a small village and used to help an old couple whenever they had some difficult tasks to do around the house. The husband was quite a traveler in days gone by. Via all our conversations he found out that i have quite an interest in coins and one day arrived at my front door with an old(and i mean very old) shoe box.He said that he received the collection from his mother and threw all the extra

Update: First GSA Softpack Morgan is back

Close up of GSA 1884-O Morgan Reverse Mhomei.... Here is a close up image of the Reverse of my GSA Softpack 1884-O Morgan. I tried numerous times to get a better image of the Obverse but, was not satisfied. I used a holigen (29W) light and my cell phone camera to get this image. I attempted to scan the Obverse but,it looked bleached out and dull. The Reverse came out pretty good using my cellphone camera. Notice the dark spot on the Eagle's beak. This is most likely a main reason for not
