The mail box was full today!!!

Went on vacation last week and put the mail on hold and then came home today to find 6 coin packages awaiting me!!! Great day for my collection - four packages with raw coins taking their place in the staging line for review and possible submissions if their quality is good. The fifth package contained a 1998 P Roosevelt dime - MS 68 FT - from Datentype. Replaces an MS 67 FT coin in my collection - so a nice upgrade to the set. The last package was the one I have been waiting on from Tele

Where's the Beef???

No 2012 dollar census It has been over 4 weeks at least that neither the Presidential or the Sacagawea mint state dollar census has been entered. Anyone else notice this? I really would like to know the census numbers one of these days. Keith To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Knowledge can be a beautiful thing!

Would this be called cherrypicking myself? Back in March my wife had given me David Bowers' Guidebook to Washington Quarters for my birthday. I enjoy and recommend his books for the collector that wants to learn more about a certain type of coin. Plus they are handy reference guides just to have in my coin library. I also have the books for Lincoln cents, Morgan dollars and Peace dollars. They can be found at a good price on Amazon. I especially like to read these books when I am short on buyi

What is wrong with teletrade

I guess third times a charm So I collect Jefferson nickels. That's basicly all I search for. About 3 months ago I find a 1987 D MS67 6FS that I need for my registry. Getting all excited and looking closely at the picture's, I notice the coin clearly says P for philly. The coin got mislabled. Which the D is about twice as rare as the P. So I email teletrade and let them know what's going on. They pull the coin from the auction immediately. Then about a month ago i'm doing my usual search's a

Lots of Negative Red Numbers

Sometimes you have to give some to get some Hi Everyone. I will keep it short today. As you can see I gave up some serious registry points and coin value today from some of my Lincoln Memorial Circulation Issue Registry Sets. In my number 1 set you can see that I remove both the 1994 and 94D NGC MS68RD examples and deleted some entire sets. Sometimes you have to give some too get some. I am pleased to announce that I will shortly be adding a NGC MS69RD 94 and 94D example. The 94 is a pop

Julys Coin of the Month and our first 100 years of Independence

The Coin of the Month for July is an 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition Medal designed by William Barber. To help finance the exposition, Congress authorized the striking of commemorative medals in June of 1874. Overall, there were two different medals, each struck in a variety of metallic compositions. One medal was 38mm in diameter and the other 57mm. My Coin of the Month is the 57mm Julian CM-11 medal struck in white metal and graded MS-61 by NGC. White metal is an alloy composed of 82

MODERN COMMEMORATIVE $1 1992 S OLYMPICS

Received my PF 70 Ultra Cameo Today. Today I received my Modern Commemorative $1 1992 S Olympics PF 70 Ultra Cameo. Looks Great. Growing up Nolan Ryan was my favorite Baseball Player. My question to the Coin Gods is why on my MS 70 there is imprint on the side and there is not on my PF 70? I think is states "XXV OLYMPICS". Also I look and this MS 70 is the only one in my collection with an imprint on the side of the coin. My PF 70 http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinV

A Modern Proof Kennedy and CORN!!!

And you ask yourself where does the corn fit in??? Hey Guys, I got up this morning like always doing the regular chores before work---but after C.S. and a couple cups of coffee. When I passed the garden to go feed the chickens I noticed that the deer had plowed a path through the corn. Well it was ready anyway for pick-in so that was the chore for after work today--- around 4 bushels. But before I headed out to round up the corn I got a few picks of a 2006 PF70UC Kennedy for a friend and no

The agony

My 1st Submission My 1st Submission I've been working on assembling top ranked mint sets for the years 1971 and 1967. The '71 set has come along nicely and quickly except now I've come to the point where I'm looking at shelling out big bucks for the coins I'd like to have. Circulation strikes of Lincoln cents in these years tend to be rather expensive in MS 67 RD. Over the last couple months I have bought quite a few raw '71 and '67 Lincon Cents and figured that since I was a Collector's S

I Bought Hawaii (Part 2)

Oh my ... So... I was looking for other HK-548 Hawaii Statehood so-called dollars on the internet. I Googled and explored my hits. Then I started to Google images. I took a double take on the NGC certification number on a image hit. I compared it with the eBay image I captured on my recent purchase and it was an exact match! This HK-548 used to be on a dealer's inventory in Virginia Beach. I bought this coin from an Austin, Texas resident on eBay. The HK-548 arrived today (that was fas

and the ecstasy

Nice score on an NGC (28/0) So that I don't go hog wild buying coins that I like and admire (all of them!) I had limited myself to building mint sets for the birth year of myself, my wife, and child. Quickly, I found limiting myself to 3 years worth of coins stagnated my looking at other years and coin types. In remedy I started a 20th Century Type Set, exclusive of proofs and gold. Without regard to rankings, I'm seeking nice affordable (for me) examples of each coin for the set. My sole li

Four Coins Hit the Mailbox Today

it was stuffed with coins. Howdy Friends, I love it when I get home from work and the mailbox is stuffed with coins! I can't wait to start taking photos and putting together a write up for the journals. I acquired the following coins over the last couple of weeks and they all hit at the same time, sweet! First is a 2012 S Star Spangled Banner graded by NGC in PF70UC which is the first addition to my Modern Commemorative Proof Set in many months and a coin I have wanted since NAS Fallon Fi

Satin Can Be Nice Too

I wanted the toner, but this is far from "settling" Okay, so Stacks and Bowers continued in this recent Whitman Coin Expo in Baltimore to sell off the monstrous hoard of high grade, short set years, Walker Halves. The first 2 times they had parts of this hoard at auction I didn't see any of the 3 coins that can still be upgraded in my set. I did make the "lateral upgrade" of my 1942. I say lateral upgrade because, if you remeber, I purchased the same date in the same grade-I just switched for

Number one in Sac Proof 70s

Picked up my last required Sacagawea Proof 70 coin today, which makes my collection complete..to date This has been an adventurous week for me in coin collecting. To me, at least, it was adventurous. I received my 2012 (W) Silver Eagle this week; an MS 70. Very strong details with a lot of shine. It is also an early release but, I am still trying to figure out the difference between Early Release and First released. I made a post the other day pertaining to the Montford Point Marines Br

TWINS

2 1/4s = 1/2 Friends, It is late in the day and the sun is down but I still managed to pull off a pic. Here is a set of twin reverse I/4 oz classic eagles that a friend wanted me to pick up at 10% over spot for him. The dates are 1894 and 1900. The reverse pic came out better as there is no sun I went with that one. Enjoy---- To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

I Bought Hawaii

I bought Hawaii, however it was not an entire island.... I don't have deep pockets like Larry Ellison (billionaire Oracle Corp. CEO) to buy the island of Lanai in Hawaii.... But I did recently buy a HK-548 Hawaii Statehood So-Called dollar to add to my collection. I already have one that is NGC graded MS66. However, this beauty is MS64PL. NGC census indicates only 6 PL have been graded (3 MS66PL and 3 MS64PL). Total HK-548 graded by NGC is 27. http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplorer/Coi

Ancient Scandinavian Coin with Ancestor's Portrait - The Other Side of the Coin

This is the other side of the coin issued by my wife's ancestor Thorri Snaersson, King of Kvenland, Finland and Gothland (320 AD - 344 AD). My wife is a direct decendent of King Thorri. The Kings of England, Finland and Noway, as well as the Earls of Orkney, and Dukes of Normandy, are direct decendents of King Thorri. Ancient Scandinavian Coin with Ancestor's Portrait

Genealogy and numismatics combined in a "perfect storm" of knowledge when my son discovered pictures of an ancient Scandinavian coin bearing the portrait of one of his ancestors. My son has been actively researching our family genealogy for several years and has been very successful in tracing back our family history. Recently he had a breakthrough that enabled him to trace one branch of my wife's family to the second century Kings of Kvenland. Before the emergence of the modern Scandinavia

A new day has dawned...

New set just started. I've been wanting to get into a classic set since the first of this year and as a goal for the year I wanted to start a Capped Bust Half Dime set. I choose the half dime, because of it's rather small size in the basic set only to realize that there are 123 die marriages or uniquely different coins. So much for a small set... I've been looking for an opportunity to get into this set with a nice coin. I took the opportunity that arose in Sunday's Teletrade auction. I plac

A Grading Question

... cuz I is a noob It has been awhile since I last posted, but I've been quietly busy in the background. I have collected 1970 Mint Sets, specifically to get the 70D Kennedys. Now that I have them, I have a question about assessing them before sending them info grading. I'm not sure if I should remove them from the plastic and then assess them, or leave them in and keep the integrity of the sets. What should I do? And if left in the OGP, how does one look past the packaging to figure out wha

Upgrade!

After all this time I finally did it! I have been thinking about it. I have saved money for it and spent it on coins. I have the coins ready to send off. I just haven't done it... until now. I upgraded my membership to premium and am loving the added features of the site. The 5 free submissions that come with the upgrade was the final reason that I did the upgrade. I have a rainbow 64 Kennedy that will be sent off and a 55S Lincoln that my father gave me many, many years ago that
