Transported Back In Time

to a time when the mint made me very happy Folks, I received a well-worn bicentennial quarter in change yesterday and it got to me to thinking about all the excitement in the hobby when the Mint, after so many years hiatus, decided to issue commemoratives again. Sure it was only the reverse but they were commemoratives and we (me and the rest of the hobby) could not wait. Turns out the designs chosen, after a national competition, were pretty ordinary with the quarter being head and sho

The Kamakazy Feeling

When you're in this long enough we all get that feeling.... After reading Kamakazy's journal about not having the desire or drive anymore, I'm sure we all can relate to it to some degree if you have been in this long enough. Sometimes it is best to just take a long break and then come back to it, sometimes maybe if you rethink your sets and sell some to start some new sets, another thought would be what you collect sometimes one needs to focus on another form of collecting and once in a blue

Pre-Long Beach Shut-out

Goldberg auctions get strong prices on nice copper It is hard to believe more than three years have gone by since the sale of the Naftzger collection of middle date large cents. Some readers may recall my posts about going to the live auction and getting six nice coins. At the time, my middle date registry set was lacking only the pricy 1821 and 1923 keys and an 1828. My prime target in the sale was an 1828. But I did not get it because I was late getting to the auction. Goldberg auctions he

still here and still loving the hobby Hi all who enjoy the journals. I know that I'm not as active on the chat boards or journaling but I am still visiting auctions on-line, and am always on the hunt for deals and coins that have that look that I love. As many of you may remember, I get a special thrill out of roll hunting and lot buying. Not the typical "roll from the bank" hunting but mostly ebay roll hunting. I try and but rolls from the Walker half or mercury dime series as close to bull

WHAT A PAIN!!

Focus or Tones I spent a bit of time trying once again to get the right picture to load for the 1957D MS66FBL. I could get a great focus with no color or a great toned pic with no focus. I kept trying until I at least had most of the color and the bell lines. To get the right angle for color and focus seems impossible!!! I was trying to get the right pic for Dimefreak but do not feel so successful. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below

back from the LONG BEACH coin show

positif review of the show i spend few hours yesterday at the show, for been the last day it was very busy, better than last day (sunday) of the show last year when half of the dealer were already gone, so changing the show days was a good move. with my wanted list on hand looking for earlie wheat and earlie proof silver coins graded by NGC. i found no coins good enough for me too purchase( sad ). but what i found is the prices been above FNV on most of the coins i was looking at, so i guess

How can PCGS grading be so inconsistent?

Auction coin appears to be way over-graded- or am I just still too much of a novice to understand? I won my first heritage auction- a PCGS 1938 Washington Quarter, MS65 for 138 with buyer's premium. Based on the picture the coin is not the most beautiful coin, the obverse luster appears to be covered by not the best grayish toning- but it has minimal marks. This was why my max bid was only 122. Another 1938- also PCGS- also MS65- also sold in the same auction for 178.02 with BP. Auction 1171,

The Lighter Side of California Gold Tokens

Not all California Gold Tokens had Liberty Head or Indian Head designs... Some California Gold Tokens had a Washington Head obverse, some had a Hard Rock Miner obverse, and then there were those which were out there a bit. Scarce to rare, this set of California Gold Tokens dealt with other topics: birds, moon and shooting stars, herons, the bust of a "Chinaman" and even a cherub (or cupid ?). This series tended to share a more-or-less common reverse, the date within a wreath (although th

Heritage Long Beach

It's been three years since I actually bid in a Heritage auction. Friends, I was helping a friend in the club that sent some real nice coins into Heritage for the auctions this week. It seemed the more I upped the bid on his coins over the past few days the more I REALLY wanted one, or 2, or more. Seriously I will have a little stretch but will be able to finance the single reminder of the auction that I won today. Here is the auction pic of my new Roosevelt---1981D MS68FT if it loads. If

Gold Love Tokens

Due to their small size United States gold dollars were often used by 19th century jewelers to manafacture "Love Tokens". In his collectors Journal entry "The Lighter Side of California Gold Tokens" http://www.collectors-society.com/JournalDetail.aspx?JournalEntryID=11448 Cal Gold "Token" Guy reports that California Gold Tokens and California Denomination Gold Pieces were heavily holed for jewelry. United States Gold Dollars were another common raw material for jewelry. Due to their small

A new QUARTER

Finally adding to the quarter set Friends and Society, I received my latest addition to my quarters yesterday. A nice lustrous 1974 D NGC MS67 with a pop of 20/0. I don't think one will be easy to obtain so it has gone into G G's Keepers for now. Here is a pic I took earlier---- To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. A Little Doubling Here is a half decent pic of the DDO coin that I got for TPETERS set to fill those empty slots with decent grades. I will take some more tomorrow to get the IN GOD WE TRUST to pop out a bit better for the doubling. Thanks and Enjoy--- To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Heritage Auctions Sells Record Breaking NGC MS68RD 1983 Double Die Reverse Lincoln Memorial

The price has really gone up Hi everyone. I was following tonight's Heritage Coin Auction Live and follow this particular coin the NGC MS68RD 1983 Double Die Reverse. NGC only grades 9 at this level with none higher. It is one of the biggies in a Lincoln Memorial registry set. The last example that sold at a major auction is the example I own now. To be honest I bought my example from the person who had bought it from Heritage and had it in his collection for a few years until I bought it

Junes Coin of the Month is Out of this World

Junes Coin of the Month is a NGC PFUC-69 French 2009 10 Euro coin that commemorates the International Year of Astronomy and the 40th anniversary of mans first steps on the moon. Greetings everyone, ever since I was a boy, I have had two enduring interests. The one is obvious, and it has to do with collecting coins. The other is not quite as apparent and has to do with science fiction and space exploration. This month, my Coin of the Month post brings both of these unrelated interests together

A milestone...

100th coin added to my horses set This will be a short post, but an exciting one for me. Today I received my 2012 Sacagawea Dollar proof coin in the mail. I have been excited for this new design for several months, and it was fun to finally see one in hand. It seems fitting that this coin also happens to be coin #100 in my horses themed set! I truly love the Sacagawea dollar design, and it is one of the few coins that I collect as a series. I opted for the proof version for my horse co

Already I'm surprised to find a low 2012 population result

I have always been a HUGE fan of the 24 K gold buffalo and the NGC Early Release label. But look what I just noticed Weather your a lover or a hater of the Early Release label we all have to admit they all fetch a higher premium when sold. After a little research I was quite surprised to see that the 2012 70 Gold Buffalo in both proof and Mint state have significantly lowere populations. 2008 PF70 Early Release Gold Buffalo 1508 2012 PF70 Early Release Gold Buffalo 1023 2008 MS70 Earl

Congratulations Jeff Shevlin

So called dollar guy appointed as American Numismatic Association Executive Director .... http://www.money.org/communications/press-releases/archives/2012-press-releases/jeff-shevlin-named-new-ana-executive-director Received an email from Jeff over the weekend indicating that he will no longer be actively selling so called dollars while he holds the position.... Ugh...I need a new source for my Hawaii so-called dollar want list....

Would You Take A Chance On This Coin?

For me personally, NO Hi everyone. About a week and a half ago this example of an IGC MS67 RD 1969S Lincoln Memorial was offered for sell on TeleTrade and it failed to sell that night. It is coming up for auction again during the June 4th auction. When I followed this coin the first time the last bid I saw was at $1000.00 WOW, is all I can say. NGC grades only 5 in MS67 RD with one graded higher. NumisMedia list the coin for $630 in MS67 RD. I am in no way convinced that this coin would
