New Medal Acquisition

It really has been a busy week for me ... On Monday I was lead in setting up a Asian Pacific American Heritage month celebration display. In the previous years, I displayed a few of my Hawaii medals and coins. A very interesting way of introducing numismatics to new collectors. Later in the day I attended a engineering conference tutorial. On Tuesday I attended an engineering conference. Later that day I filed a provisional patent (my first ever) to the US Patent office.   On Wednesday

New here

Just a few questions to anyone who wants to answer and help a new young coin collector Hello everyone, my name is Joe i am 20 and i am new here to the journals and to the registry i was just wondering if its better to find really nice raw coins and get them graded or buy pre graded coins at a fair price. and in your opinions is it better to build a full set of lower ms coins and then get the higher ms for upgrades or build it with the higher grades first thanks for any help! -joe

Interstate H-3 Coin

What? An interstate highway in Hawaii... A relative gifted this race coin to me a few years back. She volunteered at the 1997 Great Trans Koolau Trek and was awarded this coin. I recently did some research on it and its mintage is 460 (information from http://www.royalhawaiianmint.com/database.htm) H-3 is one of the most expensive interstate highways built. It cost $80 million dollars per mile 0(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_H-3) I made this video last year while traveling on par

A little silver with that change sir? & 1991 MS 67 FT Roosevelt

The holy grail of Roosevelt Dimes Received the 1991 P MS 67 FT in the mail yesterday from Datentype - a great coin with above average luster and way above average strike for the date. Year: 1991 P Grade: MS 67 FT Registry Points: 1,271 NGC Pop: 3/0 and only 3 total coins in FT status! Purchase Price: Too much, but very tough in FT... Extremely tough date in FT status, perhaps in the top five for FT rarity status. In my experience the toughest coins to find fully struck are 1969 P,

Alabama Joins the Union!!!!

Or rather joins the soon to be 62% is good enough set. Folks, I finally got around to selling a group of 4 coins I had attempted to sell last week and got a nice tidy sum for the 4 coins from a gentlemen who answered by Craigslist ad. I got 300 bucks and he got himself four nice slabs. Sooo,I immediately ran to the bank, deposited 250.00 of it and bought myself the nice AU55, NGC, Alabama Half you see pictured below. Since it was just purchased this morning, I don't have it in my hot litt

CANS OF WORMS

I've gone fishin' Yes, I opened a can of worms. Don't I always seek the truth and correctness in our hobby? I do it for myself, but I also try to make it right for the others that get a bad deal. Hopefuly Scott's set will be where he should be soon. I explained it to her and I hope she now understands how we feel. I'm hoping this will be the last of the last minute slot availability from NGC, but there is no new Sac slot, and the coins are out. Hasta la vista my friends To see old com

The Can of Worms has been Opened

Not happy! So, namvette68 has petitioned NGC and they changed the listings... and wants to go back to his corner. Sorry, but the fight is not over, but just beginning. You are happy, dude, but all you have done is open upa can of worms. Did you think that others were not as passionate about their sets? I will now begin the petition to change it again. I was upset about CHRISTOS, but this is more than I can stand. I was first... then bumped to second, and now 4th slot... no way I will let this

THANK YOU

It is possible after all. Thanks to the powers at NGC. I am happy with the correction, and pleased with the communications and time period it has taken. Sorry to snap at what some think as meaningless, but I do still have a flicker of passion for my sets. Competitions are just that. I compete against the fines collectors and friends in the world. I am proud to have the sets I have, and the friends that have come along with them. I am going back into my little corner until I am perplexed aga

Super Sport ---- S/S

Another pic that shows a little surprise. Friends and Society, As I checked into the DDO I found the other day seems that it is a regular deal and nothing special. So now onto the next find---- My 1954S MS66FT is a very clean coin with the exception of the mint mark which is very dark toned. It seems doubled for sure and has a dog nail standing up at the lower S tail. Here is a crop section enlarged. Any Dime Experts here anymore?? To see old comments for this Journal entry, clic

Sometime next week,

The #1 NGC ONLY Eisenhower Dollar Set. Today I purchased the 1974D in MS67, it is worth 3031 pts., that will move me to the #4 set overall and #1 in NGC only coins. I started the set in April of last year. My original goal was to collect the 2nd highest grade of every coin. Like most collectors that wasn't good enough once I completed the set. I looked at The Eisenhower Museum online and thought about trying to get the #1 overall set and donate it to them. 2015 will mark his 100th birthday, th

Royal Burmese Animal-Shaped Weights (1044 - 1885)

The Royal Animal Shaped Weights of the Burmese Empires are one of the most interesting and unusual numismatic collectables. I purchased the Beast Weight pictured in this journal entry from a local coin dealer in the early 1960's. At the time I was told that it was "Burmese Lion Money". Since that time I have learned that my so called "Lion Money" was in reality a "Royal Burmese Beast Weight". During the eleventh through eighteenth centuries the Burmese Empire was one of the superpowers o

NCS conserved my coin

First time and I was jamming Greetings everyone; Well, I submitted my first coin to NCS for conservation and then on to NGC for grading. Since it was my first time dealing with NCS I went in with hopes of salvaging something better than what I was submitting. Oh my was the first words out of my mouth when the coin arrived today and I had my first look at their work. I have attached a before and after photo for all to see but even the before photo doesn't really show how bad this coin

Help

Nickel Education! I recently had a 1960 Nickel graded and I would like to know an approximate value from all of the nickel experts. I don't collect them and I received this one FREE and it seems as though there are none graded higher and this is only one of eight at this grade. Please tell me if I'm correct. My Presidents Set

The frame work is complete.... Since the registry awards in January, I have been working very hard to create a set that would be a contender for Best Presented. I played around with several styles of image display, and thought about which set to give my attention. I finally decided that it would be my Presidential Dollar set, a number one ranked set in its category. I love history, and decided that I could inject that passion into its presentation. http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/re

Update: First set of NGC coin submission

I was certain that my three early 1800 Morgans would be Proof like 70s. I recieved my grades for my first five coin submissions to NGC. To refresh everyone, I choice these coins because I know each separate seller have a series of coins that were in similar condition. I wanted to make sure the quality and conditions were sufficient for future purchases. Needless to say, I had no Proof like 1800s Morgans. I did, however, find out that two dates were -- improperly cleaned -- coins. This i

Inventory And Picture Update

I love my pictures. I must admit, Rick and his journals on his pictures have made me more ambitious. I have been really working on inventorying my coins, I think I have mentioned before that my insurance guy has been bugging me for a long time to give him a list of my collectibles. So, since money is a little tight for the next couple of months, I figure this is a good time to get the work finished. I have a lot more fun taking the pictures than I do inventorying, so maybe I will finally be ab

FBLs are a challenge to photograph

Too light --for luster and you lose the bell lines Friends and Society, For now I am going for the dark side. I am trying to get the best shots for bell lines and then later on change the camera settings and light to get the luster to pop out at the same time. Sure is a fun challenge and the latest pics are loaded for a nice slide show. HAPPY COIN COLLECTING To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.
