Art Deco and the Greatest Showmen on Earth

Is yet another addition to the illustrious 60% is good enough set. Received the Bridgeport CT half dollar in the mail today and it represents the completion of the Connecticut commemorative subset consisting of the Connecticut Tercentenary Half and the Bridgeport Half. Both of these coins have very Art Deco Eagles on their reverse and the EAgle on this Bridgeport Half, when turned upside down, actually resembles a Shark, mouth agape, about to attack. The Eagle similarities are no coin

Mystery Package from NGC

A few minutes ago the mailman rang my doorbell and handed me a Priority Mail package from NGC. This was a real surprise since I currently have no coins in for grading and have already received my plaque for 2011 Best Presented Registry Set. When I opened the package I found a copy of "The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins" by David Bowers but no note or explanation as to why the book was sent to me. Then I remembered that this book was the first place prize for last

Top 50 Most Popular Modern Coins

"best of the best" in terms of popularity, scarcity and affordability? It may just be my jealousy speaking, but when have $500+ coins become known as "affordable"? I got NGC's email today about the new Top 50 label, so I decided to start my set. I own only 1 coin from the set (lowest valued 1 at that) and do not foresee owning any of the others. I'd like to see a "poor man's top 50" set that has truly affordable common modern coins. No need to offer annual awards for them, just a fun set tha

ALL IS STILL THE SAME

I registered 8 coins and lost my slot and NGC lost my second set Cleveland. I know now why I collect coins. It's for the anguish NGC has put me through for these few years. I registered my new Presidential proofs(both sets) and had top slots. Now I am out, and they have misplace the second Cleveland that I registered. I hope no one else goes through this . Every year is the same thing. Happy Collecting? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added be

1700 German Coin

A new rearing horse! I caught some sort of bug for these old German State coins with the rearing Saxon Steed. I just got this one today, and I have another nice 1818 3 Mariengroschen on the way. This coin was minted in 1700 when the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneberg was overseen by Georg Ludwig, more commonly known today as King George I of Great Britain and Ireland. George I was born on 28 May 1660 and died on 11 June 1727. He was King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1 August 1714 until hi

Major Auction Win Brings Rare GSA Issue to Carson City Set

The rarest of the rare GSA issues finds a new home with Mr. Bo Jingles! I am so stoked over last night's auction win that I had to get right up and let everybody know! If you follow my set quest, you know I am not a rich guy. I am retired and when I say I am on a fixed income I mean LOW! To even have this dream of completing a quality competitive Carson City Morgan Dollar set was out there for me, but with a loving (and patient, and tolerant) wife and some lucky finds I just moved up a few no

Research on Carson City Morgan GSA Holder Pricing

What Price Guides Are Available For These Issues? I am not 100% sure this is a journal entry and not a chat board, but this was easier to do, so that is what I went with! I am changing direction with my Carson City Morgan Dollar set. I want to put a set together with as many GSA holder (original, not a re-holder with the term "NGC"on the label as to me that is NOT a GSA coin) coins as possible. The trouble I am having is one can get a value from NGC's price guide, but I ca

Why so many Sets?

Checking out Registry Sets... I noticed that Loopy1 has over 6 pages of Registry Sets, many of which have only one coin. What the...? On the Registered Sets in Franklin Half Dollars, 1948-1963, Complete Set (Incl Varieties), Loopy1 has 16 positions out of 30. Ok, I get it, each set has different [grades] coins, but what's the point? Unless the plan is to build each into a complete set, looks like a complete waste of space.

MS 68 version of Hawaii Five-0

A recent 50c acquisition to my collection ... The image is a coin I recently purchased. It's a so-called 50c, 1959 silver Hawaii Statehood, thin variety (illegally made the same thickness as a US 50c piece). Purchased at a reasonable price... Grandma's Gold

My feature coin for this Mother's Day journal entry is a 1856-S Quarter Eagle that my paternal grandmother saved from the melting pot in 1933. My grandmother was born in Bialystock Poland in 1896 and immigrated to this country as a teenager. She married my grandfather in 1916 and together they ran a small tailor shop. Over the years my grandparents put aside a small number of gold coins including this 1856-S Quarter Eagle. In 1933 U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order

Gunsmoke Fan ?

This slug - was it inspired by the long-running (20 years) TV show, Gunsmoke ? Interesting medal. According to the fellow I got this from, a "Gunsmoke" fan had 500 of these minted to celebrate the slug that was used in the Gunsmoke "Treasure of John Walking Fox" Episode (Episode 406, Season 11, which aired on April 16, 1966). When an old buffalo hunter named Jacob Beamus is shot dead in self defense, his loyal Indian partner, John Walking Fox (Leonard Nimoy), starts paying for things with $50

Please Unregister Your Sold Coins!

Nothing is More Annoying that Trying to Register a Coin or Two and getting this Message - "This cert number is already owned by another user." Today I was trying to register a very nice NGC 1946 S MS 67 STAR(*) FT Roosevelt Dime when I got this message. Honestly if you have placed your coins on EBAY or a coin auction site (like Heritage or Teletrade) maybe it is time to unregister them from your NGC Collectors Society page. Just a thought as his seems to be the polite thing to do. In the end N

No sun for pics today

Went for the lights Friends and Society, As I planned to work on pics today and was left with a cloudy day I kept looking for other options. I did come up with a cooler and lights directed into it. Lets see what came of it as I am just checking the pics on a 1926 MS65 Peace Dollar. The rev is white with a wide luster band around 50% behind the eagle that is hard to get a good pic on. The two armed bandit

I worked with show bands in and around Nevada from 1963 and we had a great time. Just after high school I left Memphis and moved to L.A. Soon I was working with bands playing all over S. California. After a year I was invited to audition with a "Show Band"and we worked in NEVADA!! This was the dawn of my Numismatic experience. The first time I pulled on the slot machine, I was HOOKED. I was immediatly taken over by those georgeous silver dollar "Morgans". Yes indeed I could not get the

Access Denied!!

Well I expected it. Some people just can't handle the truth or do not want to be bothered by it. Well there it is. Another journal reply that I got booted off of. That is two for the life of membership and 2 for this month. Ah well it's all good and there really was not a deal to be had anyway. I got the weekend off and will try to get up some more pics this weekend. Hope the sun is out good in the morning and I get some great shots. Happy Coin Collecting To see old comments for this

Ready to Pull The Trigger

But my shop is closed!!!! Until Monday. Gary inspired me, at the end of April, to seek out a Columbia SC 1936 commemorative half. It was Gary's May C.O.M. and I fell in love. Well I found one on Ebay for a reasonable price, pulled some outlier coins (coins that don't really fit any of my current collecting interests) and planned on going to California Numismatic Funding (they are great!!!) on Friday to sell my coins and get the 240.00 needed to by my Columbia. WELLLL, when I got to the shop
