Do silver coins tone or corrode in the holder?

If a certified coin is toned in the holder- was that the way it looked when it was graded- how would one know? I bought my first MS Morgan dollar for my 20th century type set. It is a common date 1900 O- NGC MS 64. There is small dark spot on the reverse that is almost black. The rest of the coin has some light red-brown toning just around the rim, but nothing like this. I saw this spot in the auction and thought it might have been on the holder- I really did not know what it was. I got the co

Not Following Advice

My wife told me some good financial advice she heard. It makes sense: Don't go broke saving money. That is, do not spend money you do not have just because something is on sale or because you saved money on something else. As I wrote in the wee hours this morning, the other day I 'won' an 1847 half dime at auction for half what I was willing to pay for the 1858 half dime that was my prime target, but did not end up mine. So, having saved so much money... I participated in the Heritage sessi

Siamese Porcelain Money of 1760 - 1875

My feature Primitive Money for Wednesday April 18 is Siamese Porcelain Coins. Siamese Porcelain Coins were used in Siam (Thailand) between 1760 - 1875. They come in many shapes, sizes and designs. Siamese Porcelain Coins are actually gambling tokens that were made in China for use by the Chinese in private gambling houses in Sia, but were also used in the surrounding area as small change. The gambling houses were "tax farms" where every year, or some say every three years, the government a

Need Some Info

My memory is going bad, plus I procrastinate and do not write things down right away. I hope someone can help me. A few years ago someone posted a journal entry about a good slab cleaner. The entry also gave a link to a website where the cleaner could be purchased. Does someone remember the entry? And could you point me in the right direction or tell me the name of the cleaner and the link?? Thanks for your help!!!

New Sales Option

Seems to be a nice new addition Friends and Society, Up till this week I have had many sets for sale or trade. As usual when someone gets tired of a set they have had for a while the trade option works very well (coins for coins). This also works well when others do not have the funds available to add to their sets. I did 2 trades this week that were a little different option and worked very well. I traded coins for raw bullion and gold chains. Just a new option now available to add any coi

Would You Pay $1400 for this coin?

2011 MS68 PCGS Lincoln Shield Hi everyone. I had this particular coin tracked in last nights TeleTrade Auction and all I can say is "WOW" This coin sold for $1400 last night before fees. I know there is such a big debate about the value of PCGS vs NGC coins but this is just out of whack. I have a NGC example of this coin in the same grade that I paid less than $100 for. You decide. As always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecting To see old comments for this Journal entry, click h

Siamese Bullet Money of 1237 - 1886 (1 Baht Silver Bullet)

My feature Primitive Money for Tuesday April 17 is Siamese Bullet Money. The bullet money of Siam (Thiland) was issued from 1237 to 1886. To produce these bullets molten silver or gold is poured into a wooden form and shaped into an elliptical bar. Then two shallow parallel crosscuts are made in the bar, and it is hammered into a nearly round shape. The ends of each piece appear turned together so that the finished money is almost round - very much like a real bullet. Stamps are made by han

My Presidential coins

and other relations Hello Friends, It is believed over 100 million Americans can show that, at least one President of these United States resides in their family tree and about 20 million can claim an ancestor who arrived on the Mayflower. It amazes me that I fall into both of these groups of Americans. One interest that can keep me away from my coin collecting addiction is researching my family tree that shows our DNA's journey from Europe to North America to Hawaii, that side being the Cau

Cowrie Shell Money

My feature Primitive Money for Sunday April 15 is the Cowrie Shell. (1200 BC to mid 20th century) Historically, many societies have used cowries as money. Heritage Coin

It eluded me for a while... but thanks to a heads up by Hunter's Gold I finally have it in my registry. About two week's ago Hunter's Gold let me know this one was coming up for auction at Heritage. Breaking Up

A week for breaking up sets. Friends and Society, It has been another good week with plenty of work and of course a few coin deals in the works. I sold a Franklin MS64FBL, 2000 millennium Silver Eagle, and a Ike Dollar. Worked up a $1000 trade of three Mocom Silver Dollars for three Silver Eagles so the Eagle set will be broken up now and the Mocom set will grow. I also did a deal on 25 PF70UC State Quarters which is 50% of a perfect set. Along with me breaking up my Eagle set Todd has d
