1876 US Centennial Exposition Medal

Just a short post this time, but I had to share my latest acquisition. Greetings all, I just wanted to share a cool medal I came across on E-Bay. This medal was engraved by William Barber, and minted by the US Mint to finance the 1876 US Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. I will have much more to say about the medal later, but from the first time I saw it, I had to have it. Naturally this medal is destined for my Inspirational Ladies custom set. This medal is struck in white metal and as

A Thank You to members that help out in need.

I just wanted to take some time and THANK OTHERS!!! Friends, I listed 10 proof sets for Todd Peters to sell while he was in chemo. I did sell 4 full sets and have 6 left and wanted to thank the guys that purchased them again (they know who they are). I have decided to break the remaining sets up. So if you build proof sets by variety now is a pretty good chance to snag those modern proofs to fill your slots. The remaining proof coins by variety are listed on my page. Let me know if you a

When thinking About Points, Best To Suspend Logic

As point allocations seem to be completely arbitrary Folks, Just did a minor upgrade to my primary 20th century type set by substituting a PF69 silver Clad 1976 Quarter for a MS66 of the same type. Here's where it gets confusing for me. VALUE MS66 1976 Quarter - 22.50 PF69 1976 quarter - 18.75 (NOT A CAMEO OR ULTRA CAMEO) POINT VALUE MS66 1976 Quarter - 59 PF69 1976 quarter - 237 I have managed to upgrade the point total of my set by substituting a non-cameo proof for a MS

The final medal for my Hawaii Statehood Medal Type collection arrived from NGC today ... Size does matter (for my large Hawaii Statehood medal). Picture is a comparison between the normal and oversize NGC coin holders. Now I need to figure out a method to display and house these different sized holders. I really like the semi-circle notch (directly above the medal). One can view the serial number on the medal's edge). http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?

Got Feuchtwanger'd in Baltimore

Got Feuchtwanger'd in Baltimore At the Whitman Baltimore Show I was finally able to locate a well struck 1837 MS63 Feuchtwanger Composition Token as a "got to have" addition to my Flying Eagle / Indian Cent collection. According to Rick Snow's Flying Eagle and Indian Cent Book published 1992, Dr Lewis Feuchtwanger was a self proclaimed doctor of many talents including Dentistry, Metallurgy and the "selling of snake oil remedies". At the time, the price of copper in the circulating large cent c

Precious Metals Price in Current Market

Were is the peoples gold headed, silver and the years ahead! The core assets of collectors tied to precious metals, in the past several weeks the price of the base metals in our hobby has stabilized and seems ready to headed in one direction or another soon. Current price range of 32 to 33 dollars per ounce seems pent up and is ready to unwind up or down! Every report that I read these days talks about how, world wide each year, miners are finding less and less deposits as well as worki

Gold or Brass: That Is The Question

I bet this medal caused a bit of a stir when it was released in 1976 During the Bicentennial Celebration in the United States in 1976, many, many medals were marketed around the country as souvenirs. One such medal was a replica of the 1851 California Fifty Dollar Gold Piece. The obverse of this replica had an eagle with shield and banner, standing on a rock and the legend "Official Bicentennial Goldpiece Commemorative." The reverse, I imagine, caused a bit of a stir in that it identified

My Pending Set Donation

1 of 6 possible "First Day Ceremony" sets to be permanent part of National Park museum ... If you read my previous journal entry titled "I Was There!"... The coin set mentioned has been NGC submitted for a "First Day Ceremony" designation. After correspondences and telephone calls to NGC, it was agreed that these coins will be designated as "First Day Ceremony"(they could have easily obtained a "First Release" or "Early Release" designation). I believe this is the first and only Star-Spangle

Kennedy Halves

Circulated or uncirculated I need some help here from some Kennedy half collectors. I was under the assumption that after 2002 and including no halves were struck for circulation. I ask this because I got a few bank rolls to snoop through and nearly all were 2005 and 2008 with a few other dates from 2003 on up to 2009. A Kennedy half education is needed here. Thanks to anyone who can help. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

The end of coins,

It's closer than you think.... Has anyone read the article in this weeks Coin World about smart phone transactions? It appears that in about 5 yrs. some of the people are figuring on most transactions to take place thru some type of hand held device. Does the collecting of coins slowly begin to fade away when the next generation grows up without using them? Does the Age of Technology drive prices up due to lack of supply or drive prices down due to lack of interest? Any guesses as to how this

Knowledge is Power (Part II)

Read, study, and learn your collecting interest... No matter where or from whom you purchase your numismatic material always be an astute hobbyist by being knowledgeable expert in your interest area or seek proper expert advice. I seen too many individuals make purchases that they have regretted from seconds (at auctions) to decades (at appraisals) later. The challenge for each collector, no matter what is collected, is to be more knowledgeable than the seller/dealer. At some point as

The E-Bay Phenomenon

E-Bay can be good resource for purchasing coins, but there is one caveat to be aware of, Buyer Beware! I find the electronic store a fascinating phenomenon. Consider this; if dealers were overcharging their customers in brick-and-mortar coin shops, it would not be long before they went out of business. For a brick-and-mortar business to survive it has to have robust sales. A dealer running a coin shop with high overhead costs in a community with a limited amount of potential customers cannot c

Coin Sleuth

A story of finding a coin's pedigree by accident... After purchasing a highly prized "Mid-Pacific Aloha Carnival Dollar" that depicts the great Hawaiian Olympian "Duke Kahanamoku" (So called dollar HK-721/Medcalf & Russell 2M-329) for my "Territory of Hawaii Souvenir" collection, I did an online search for similar coin in circulated condition. The coin is not dated, but the Mid-Pacific Carnival was held in 1914 in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. A rare "Dukie" in uncirculated condition i

There Ought to be a Law!

Buyer Beware, The Flim Flam Man is alive and well on eBay. There has been a lot of talk in the Journals lately about great buys on eBay. While this may be true for the knowledgeable collector eBay can be a dangerous market place for the novice or overly trusting. In my area of collecting, US/Philippine coins, some of the claims of rarity and asking prices are borderline criminal. For example one of the current eBay listings is a 1944 D Ten Centavos in NGC MS62 which is listed at a sta

Very Cool.

Got the award in the mail. This is way over-due since I got the thing a month ago. I thought it was really cool when I saw that it looked basically the same as the Journal Award from 2008. They match so they look really cool together in my living room. Thanks, again to NGC. I keep telling myself this, but if the budget and circumstances allow it I'm going to try to pick up a new coin. We'll see. There's actually a little coin show that comes to town around May. I might try to take advantage

Coin Journal for the week of 03/18/2012 through 03/25/2012This week saw me with some extra time on my hands, which I put to use by searching every online auction to see what coins could be found. I have a few favorites, and few that will never see me ag
