Yes, Another Baltimore Show

Resisting the Urge I have been over to the Baltimore Convention Center three days this week, and will go back tomorrow. I made two purchases, and have been sorely tempted by a few others. On Wednesday morning, I went at 9:00 for auction lot viewing. My eye had been on an 1849/8 (though the exact nature of the overdate is controversial) half dime in a 66 holder. Everything was fine, except that the vertical shield lines were distorted. I could not think how it could be anything other than a p

Another Rare Congo Addition to the family!

Rare off-metal Essai I just bought another new Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo, technically speaking, but same country) piece that I have been looking for. The coin in question is a 1965 10 Francs Essai in Copper-Nickel, NGC MS64. I love it when they already come certified. Saves me the time and trouble. I already have the aluminum version of this Essai, also in NGC MS64. I happen to have the regular version of the coin in MS66, which is quite nice for an aluminum coin. Now is someon

Hawaii Five-0 (The Series Continues)

She is an incredibly beautiful and captivating Hawaiian ... She...as in my coin... Sharply struck with hints of light aqua and a sprinkling of gentle rose hues makes this a pulchritudinous example of the 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii quarter dollar. Do You Still Call it an Upgrade????

the grade's the same, the registry points are the same, BUT.... Well it seems as if there are more than 2 potential upgrades left for my set. Last I journaled about my Walking Liberty Half short set I was lamenting that there were only 2 possible coins left in the set that I could afford to upgrade- NUMERICALLY upgrade that is. It seems that I have found another way to spend silly amounts of money for a coin that I already own one of--and not even in a higher grade either. Perusing the perpl

A Fascinating Historical Confluence

And it happened under 3 Flags. Folks, I read a fascinating article published by Numismatic News recently about the 1861 New Orleans Half Dollar. I was already aware of its backstory and have even owned several examples but this article: http://www.numismaticnews.net/article/hard-to-top-story-of-1861-o-half-dollar pulls it all together in a very compelling way. For those of you not aware of the story, the 1861-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar was minted by 3 separate government entities, th

All I can sayis.......WOW!!!!!

I never in a million years thought I would have so many cool people respond to my posts. Just when I think there is on one left that wants to read my letters, I get another responce. Thane with a killer Laughing Gull pic, Six Mile Rick with his hilarious rooster story (which by the way has an awesome name!) And all the others with so much helpful advice and ideas. I never thought this would be half as much fun as it has been. I really look forward to getting back my NGC orders and adding

The Liberation of the Philippines: Manila the Approach March (Picture of Destroyed Highway and Railroad Bridges)

The picture attached to this Journal entry was taken by my father in early February 1945 during the approach march to Manila. The picture shows one of the many highway and railroad bridges which were destroyed by the Japanese to slow the American advance. After securing Ft. Stotsenburg and the important Clark Field Air Base the XVI Corps attacked south through the Central Plains toward Manila. (See my earlier Journal entry for historical details and picture of Ft. THANK YOU THANE,JASON,DOUG, & MALCOLM

I know everyone is busy, so thank you very much for taking time to look at my latest creation. A special thank you to Thane. I will be adding the new Laughing Gull pic as soon as I stop writing this. BIRDS OF THE WORLD UPDATE

Well I spent the past two days working on the pics on my Custom Set "Birds of the World". I think I did much better with the coin pic and I also had the idea to add a pic of the real thing, just so people could see the living bird. Still want to work on the set-up and description alittle more. But thank you to everyone who took time to check it out. http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=3519 Thanks, Brett To see old comments for this Journal entry, c

Death and Destruction

They come with fire, they come with axes... gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning. I made the decision that I would complete my raw Lincoln set with the ever illusive 1909-S V.D.B. Obviously, I don't have $1000.00 + laying around waiting to do something with, so I looked over my collection and I decided the set that I was the least emotionally attached to was my 1960's SMS set. Forging ahead, I posted and waited and posted and waited some more. I was lucky to find a coin that was o

A big thank you

to all who wrote and helped Just wanted to say to all who reached out to WKF. I have heard from many of you and to let you know that Kerry called and was so appreciative and wanted to convey to all who cared enough to send an e-mail etc. how much you touched him. I'm sure Kerry will thank you in his own way but until he reactivates his membership he did want me to pass that along. Well done all, well done !!!!!! NGC "GENERATIONS"

Do they affect pricing As we all know PCGS coins generally command a premium over identically graded NGC coins. It is stated to buy the coin not the holder, but that is not always the way it is sadly! My question is do any of the different "GENERATIONS" of NGC slabs make a coin sell for a premium.I have heard stories of NGC being lax on grading standards in the past.Would this cause a decrease in value in certain "GENERATIONS" of slabs. What do you think? Mystery California Medal ?

If anyone knows what this Medal is, and/or where it can be found in a reference guide, please let me know... I just received this Medal (ebay). I had one like it in my collection a while back. It looks identical to the 1925 California Diamond Jubilee Medal except the obverse legend ("California Diamond Jubilee 1925") is missing and the Golden Gate Bridge (I presume) is now residing in that spot on the obverse. It is also very similar to the 1937 Golden Gate Bridge Fiesta Medal except that

Newest arrival of Sacaqawea $1 from Heritage auction

Set now 75% filled with NGC Proof 70 coins. I received my latest purchases from Heritage auction today. Four Sacaqawea $1 NGC Proof 70. All for nearly 1/2 FMV. Even with the Buyers premium, I still was below FMV on all four coins. I need 2000; 2001; 2007 and 2008 to meet my goal of having 2000-2011 by the end of July 2012. Being new in the adventure of coin collecting, I have learned from many sources, especially through this board, that you should buy coins that you can afford and enj

Grading my Franklin Half Dollars

I bought a couple of folders of "uncirculated" Franklins and decided to build up a registry set, so I decided to send some in to NCG. I am a rookie when it comes to coin collecting so it comes as no suprise that I am not too familiar with how to grade. I bought a grading guide (The Official ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins) and proceeded to "grade" about 65 Franklins. I was a little disappointed in that not all of the coins were UNCs, but I took out the five nicest and sent them i

time for a change

Went copper rather than clad today!!!! Hello, I broke down tonite and rather than buying clad Roosevelt's I opted to go copper!! I ran across a deal on a couple of Lincoln cents that I could not pass up. The 1st Lincoln was a 1936D MS67RD. The picture is absolutely stunning. I can't wait to see it in my hands. On the flip side it has a value of 725 points in the registry. The 2nd Lincoln was not a pretty coin, but it is a key one for the series. It is a 1916S MS65BN. I prefer RD, but f

It has been a while

since I have upgraded a Kennedy Today I upgraded a 1980 Kennedy to PF70UC. I won the coin at the on line auction Heritage Auctions. This was the first time I had purchased from them. It is always nice to come back to your sets and revisit and upgrade when you can. My Precious!

... or my find of the day! Just spent 19+ hours at the computer attending auctions all over the country. I spent the first few hours checking out the goods, terms of auctions, etc, to see which ones I wanted to watch. The first auction started at 8:30am my time and ended about 11:30pm. I picked up some amazing deals... a couple more gold coins, and a nice variety of others, but this is the prize of the day. Can't wait to get it to NGC for encapulation! 1886 P Seated Liberty Dime with amazing
