NGC MS68RD 1996 Lincoln Memorial-Swap out for PCGS coin

NGC Population of 30 with 1 graded higher. Hi everyone. Just received my latest addition to my Lincoln Memorial Circulation Issue Registry set today which i purchased for just under 1/2 price of list value. I did have a PCGS coin of the same grade in this slot but any time I get a chance to swap out a PCGS coin for a NGC coin I will do so. 16 coins now shy of a complete set and trying to fill in those slots and any upgrades I can. As always, thanks for looking and Happy Collecting. To

Working With Pictures Part 2

Is it washed out? Here is the photo shot in the AdobeRGB color space. Quite frankly, looking at both with my editing software on my monitor, I can not tell a bit of difference. What do you think? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Working With My Camera

Is the color washed out? I've spent the last few days working with my camera. A little background, I originally started taking coin pics with a Pentax point and shoot camera, but then upgraded to a digital SLR (also a Pentax). SPHansen got me back on track with an entry about his photos, so I thought I would work on mine some more. My dSLR can take raw format pictures in either sRGB (for viewing on a monitor) or AdobeRGB (for printing) color spaces. According to my book I have on coin photog

The Mint Beckons

And I Yawn!!!! Folks, Returned from the mailbox today and found our US Mint had sent me information about the 2012 Infantry commemorative Dollar. I took one look at the new Dollar and i just said no way I am ever going to want that. Something about the design is just plain pedestrian. It looks like it was designed for the sole purpose of producing large, bright, flawless, PF70 fields. If you look at coins from the early 20th Century or the 19th century, you notice a lot more detail, a

1909S

Never thought I would own one. But I found this one on eBay about a week ago and I had to have it. Pure copper luster on both sides of the coin with only one small carbon spot on the reverse. It is not the best grade but it fits nicely in my sets and in my budget. Enjoy the pic and check out my Wheat Reverse sets to see some other nice additions I have recently made. I hope to have all of the pictures loaded in the next week. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Ne

Back to the Basics

... or Time to Pay Attention to My Favorite Series Coin Journal for the week of 02/20/2012 through 02/26/2012This week turned out to be a boon for my Roosie collection, adding several perfect coins to the gaps. As I was going through my raw collection to see what coins I wanted to send in for grading, I came across a very special coin; a 1881 Morgan. This coin is special because it is the very first coin that my grandmother gave to me when she saw that I was becoming a serious coin collector. S

Wartime Alloy USA/Philippines Five Centavos

In order to conserve Copper and Nickel the wartime alloy of the Five Centavos was changed to Copper (65%), Zinc (23%), and Nickel (12%). The 1944 and 1945 Five Centavos use the same obverse and reverse designs as the pre-war Five Centavos but have a different Wartime composition. The pre-war Five Centavos had a composition of Copper (75%) and Nickel (25%). Both Copper and Nickel are important strategic materials during wartime. Copper is needed for the production of shell casings and Nickel

A Tough One Finally Caged

Every coin series has a number of tough coins - the California Gold series has many... It's not everyday that a collector living within a budget gets an opportunity to land a big fish; one of those tough dates or types which never seem to fit within an average collector's budget. The California Gold series has so many tough dates and types that for most collectors it is a [financially] impossible set to finish. But every once in a while, you get the opportunity to capture a big one. I did

Date Set Complete

Complete Morgan Date Set When I first started out I thought this would be an easy grab. It is only 28 coins after all. What was I thinking? I was clipping along having a good ol' time when I got to the early and mid 1890s. That's when I realized it was going to be a little tougher than I first thought. But now it is finished and I can move on to the next. Where to go from here . . . .

Collecting Ben Franklin Halves

Bought a Bugs Bunny today... it was my first variety, the 1955 FS-401 Die Clash. Popular, too, I guess; I thought I could use it in my competitive set. But it's not listed. Bummer. Does anybody know why? Just sent in five others to be graded. Be interested in seeing how my attempt at grading compares. Will be sending in five proofs next.

Gold vs Platinum

The race is on Once upon a time in America, and around the world for that matter, PLATINUM used to be more expensive than gold, MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE in fact. Since sometime in 2011, that has not been the case. I remember that 10th Anniversary Platinum American Eagle Set from the U.S. Mint and the going price for that limited edition set. Does anyone else remember how that came in a nice wooden case with a 1/2 oz Proof and a 1/2 oz Reverse Proof Platinum coin. I also remember getting a 2

The Early Years of a Collector

Sometimes your Birthday makes you ruminate about the past After reading Bullys excellent writeup on Coin Security/Preservation and DM Merrills nostalic walk back in time, I had to provide my own experiences (circa 1968-1970). Silver had already all but disappeared from circulation except those stealthy war nickels and the occasional Kennedy Half, but wheat-back cents were still in abundance to include dates as early as the Teens. Like many of you, the earliest album I had was a Whitman tri

PART TWO: Security of your coin collection

Previous topics posted on 02/12/2012 - INSURANCE for your collection, and an accurate INVENTORY of your coins. You may recall that my previous entry originated as a result of another collector's entry about previously obscuring his sets for security purposes. That posting coincided with an entry from another collector about how to insure one's collection. Therefore, I made an entry highlighting insurance and inventory issues for our collections. As usual, my entry ran a bit long, whic

Battlefield Brass to Brass Centavo - No Tin about it!

The 1944-S USA/Philippine One Centavo was made from salvaged shell casings. Since this wartime alloy used no Tin the resulting coins were actually Brass rather than Bronze. The 1944-S USA/Philippine One Centavo uses the same obverse and reverse designs as the pre-war One Centavo but has a different Wartime composition. For information about the obverse and reverse designs see my USA/Philippines Type Set at: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=512

TOOTH FAIRY MONEY

Another Childhood Memory A recent trip to the dentist triggered a childhood memory. Mom and Dad did not have much money when I was growing up. My less than straight teeth, today, attest to the fact that braces were financially out of the question. There was no paying a dentist to pull baby teeth, so Dad made a game of the extraction process. He tied one end of some string around the loose tooth and the other end to the door knob. I do not remember the game, but somehow he would get Mom a

sell Sell SELL !!!

Great buying AND selling opportunities as lots of collectors are out, but others want in. January provided a good tail wind for selling numismatics. The markets continued their recovery, holiday spirits blew into the new year, metals hovered near highs, US economic statistics continued to improve while global uncertainties persisted ... a perfect win/win for metals and willing US buyers ... Well, I am out. I have gone more than half cash (or short ETF) in my combined retirement accounts.

1971 D NGC MS 67 FT Roosevelt Dime

Self Made and welcome addition to my set. This coin is one small step in turning my Clad Roosevelts into more of a self made labor of love. I find enjoyment in buying raw coins, self grading them and then reaping the rewards of my labor when NGC confirms their grade. This coin is a fantastic example of an early die strike Roosevelt. It exhibits wonderful luster, a frosty almost cameo look to the reverse and a deep full strike. The 1970s issues are quite hard to find in full strike and are

Since he didnt post to chats as well to respond Just about everything you stated I totally disagree with. Markets are up, employment is down, Congress will not have anything to do with whoever takes office next and its obvious you have not been watching the auctions as almost every top pop I have seen has gone for premium dollars. First Journal from this member page

My collection is going to the proof side. Friends, So many journal entries lately about selling off sets. Of course some are collectors but most are investors that have realized that the values of what they purchased has dropped. Soon will come the chance to get some nice coins for sets as so many people continue to try to sell their goods. I have been in the club for years and see the trend on a yearly basis. I have always been interested in circulated coin sets but added a few sets wit
