Added another Roosevelt

Got a * coin! Hello All, I added another Rosie to my set. I picked up a 1946S MS67*FT. The fields are almost mirror like and Blast White as well! With this "star" coin I now have 2 "star" coins in my set. I probably won't get any more as they are difficult to come by and usually rather expensive. I have 3 other coins on lay-a-way right now as well. Hopefully I will be able to get them home by the end of the month. They will fill 3 holes in my 65 and up set. On hold are the following:

Kudos to the US Mint

Kudos to US Mint I just received in the mail the UNC $5 Gold Star Spangled Banner Commemorative I had ordered on Monday, WOW what service, same week delivery on a new gold issue!!! The obverse well depicts a naval battle scene from the War of 1812, with IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY 1812-2012 as the inscription. The reverse show the handwriting " O say can you see" against the backdrop of 15 stars and stripes representing the Star Spangled Banner flag. A very well designed modern commemorative in

2012 Infantry Commemorative Silver $1

What a major disappointment!! Hello fellow collectors, I received my two Infantry commemorative silver coins and to say that I am disappointed and underwelmed with this coin is an understatement! These coins have no character or any kind of wow factor that makes them stand out. I understand using the Infantry Insignia on the reverse but the obverse is horrible. The Infantry has such an honorable and storied past that something more then a soldier that looks like he is about to trip and fal

What is POP and What is NOT!!!!

What set of coins should I really purchase??? Friends, I get the questions tossed at me once in a while. --- What are your choices?? --- What do you think of future whatever??? --- Where do you really think the value of this will sit in 5 years??? For me as a collector = Of so many different type of circulated coins to me my sets are irreplaceable proof of history past. The coins of yesterday that I show my friends and their eyes enlarge as they actually try to imagine that the coins are

My Best Circulation Find from the Past

The year was 1995. The location was Southern Maryland. The find was ... In May of 1995, I stumbled upon a news article about a woman who unloaded a few coins at a coin shop in Annapolis, Maryland for a whopping $200 a piece. With this news, I rushed to the local bank to purchase a new box of coins. I opened my first roll and started to delicately view each. As I detected something odd with the coin I would place it aside. I looked at each coin with a 10X loupe. It was tedious and my eyes t

Collecting from Circulation

Is near impossible. Statehood Quarters were relatively easy to collect out of circulation and they remain very plentiful even today. The Territory quarters were much harder and I have yet to pull them all from circulation. These current America the Beautiful quarters are even worse, I've finally thrown in the towel and purchased the 2011 10-quarter (P and D) set the mint for 9.95, since I purchased them with another item, the postage prorates to about $2.50. So I ended up paying the mint $

I Was There!

I see a need for a Ceremony Release designation for coins/medals obtained at an US Mint coin/medal release day ceremony. Why? Because I was there! I was not there 30-days after the fact (designation criteria for Early or First Release labels). I was in attendance to support the celebration of the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Release Day ceremony at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore Maryland at 11:00 am on the morning of March 5, 2012. The ceremony wa

Registry awards need a sound change.

Paper awards redundant and needless. I'm sure I speak on the behalf of many. It's nice having a top registry set and a ribbon flag online to go along with it with the year of entry. However , the zillions of diplomas might be overdoing it and will eventually end up as fire starter. A new change.... any registry set winner wins ONE free grading when submitting 5 coins, World or US. Seems fair and productive ? THEN , if you have 5 winning sets you get 2, 10 winning sets you get three, 15 fou

The US Mint Does IT Right

And they deserve some positive feedback. folks, I recently criticized the Mint for the very mundane design of the U.S. Infanrry Commemorative Dollar. That design remains an uninspiring exercise in minimalism but the new Star Spangled Banner Commemorative Dollar looks beautiful. In fact, it kind of proves my own belief that you can hardly ever go wrong if you use an allegorical Miss Liberty as a major element of your design. Scrap those ugly old Men coins, let's get back to real artistry

New Congo Goodies!

New Finds And Great Grades Two new additions to my Belgian Congo collection. To note, one is an error coin. From my experience errors are difficult to find. I have a few in my collection. 1967 10 Sengis Error Obverse Partial Brockage in NGC MS65. If you look closely at the pictures you can easily see the obverse brockage reeding, but a little tougher to see it the high pushed up metal on the opposite corresponding side. A small but mighty little error. The second coin is an over-date I

What's in a Type Set?

The Red Book defines TYPE as "A series of coins defined by a shared distinguishing design, composition, denomination, and other elements", and TYPE SET as "a collection consisting of one representative coin of each TYPE, of a particular series or period". While there is general agreement about these definitions there is often a lack of consensus in the numismatic community regarding which coins represent distinct TYPES, and what slots to include in a particular TYPE SET. For example if you

Budget? What budget- oh- THAT budget

It's only money? As I look at other members registries, I amazed at some of the high quality collections out there, while others are more in line with my budget/collection. I see some collections of MS gold, MS Large cents- even one member has an almost complete set of MS seated liberty dimes- wow- as I struggle to work on a raw set in Good? I admit some times it gets depressing knowing that I probably will never have the income to support the purchase of even one coin that has $2000+ plus p

Is the '(W)Struck at West Point Mint' Label Silver Eagles Really a Variety Coin?

. . . I want a -Denver- minted Silver Eagle Set, think there will ever be one? Some time ago I inquired about having the 2012(S)coin added to the MS Eagles competative set, the response from the Staff (I think) was overkill, by adding a whole new set that includes ALL the variation labels. Now the the ASE MS Set includes the 2011(S) but not the 2012(S), the other includes both 2011/12(W) and (S) coins. Though I agree that the -(S)Struck at San Francisco Mint- coin, though just another bullio

An Old-timer's Collection

Lot's of coins, most of them raw and impossible for me to get them all certified in what's left of my lifetime. It wasn't until recently that I sent in any coins to be certified. I have been collecting coins for over 55 years and learned over many years how to grade. Anyone that collects coins needs to learn how to grade a coin. Without that knowledge, snyone whether they be a dealer of friend, could sell you a coin that might end up grading 3 to 5 grades lower than what you thought it migh

A Penni for Your Thoughts...

I love when fun, cool stuff happens in this hobby. Last night I was going through some mint sets, as I generally do, looking for the next great conditional rarity for my collection, when a little surprise happened. I had pulled a 72 Mint set from my mint set stock pile, opened it, flipped the envelope, slid the sleeves out and laid them on my jeweler's pad and was about to toss the ratty old envelope when a small glint of metal caught my eye as it went flying through the air and bounced off

Garys March Coin of the Month

This month my attention turns from Britannia to Lady Liberty in this second of three journal posts on coins displaying feminine seated national personifications. The coin I selected for this months Coin of the Month is an NGC XF-40, 1853 arrows and rays, Seated Liberty Half-Dollar. I own several coins that include the Seated Liberty motif, but I picked this coin because of its significance as a type coin. To fill the arrows slot in my type set, I could have chosen any half-dollar dated 1853 to
