Silver Eagles

How I became a nut job. Since I intended to use coin collecting as an investment vehicle, I did a lot of thinking about what to collect. I knew relatively little about collecting, but I intended to learn quickly by cramming. I watched every TV coin related shows. I read books by Rick Tomaska and several others. I signed up for news letters about coins. I also studied paper money collecting. I`m a retired law enforcement evidence tech. expert. I could testify as an expert witness in cour

Following up on a few requests

A few pictures of my other collection. Hello fellow collectors, I had a few requests to post some pictures of my collection of firefighter memorabilia. It's a small collection and I only have a few pics of some of the stuff but I hope to change that in the following months. Jeffrey To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Another Top Pop

This new to my set coin arrived today. I added it just a couple of days ago. I found it on eBay and until the last few minutes of the bidding I thought I was going to get an exceptional steal but the bids went up in the end. I still won it for a reasonable price and it is now a proud slot holder in my set. My set is now over 15,000 points! Thanks for looking. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Star Spangled Banner is now in my Collection!

2 very nice coins join my growing collection Hi everybody, I would like to share my latest additions to my Modern Commemorative collection...the Proof and MS strikes of the Star Spangled Banner. The Mint did a much better job with this coin then the Infantry design that came out earlier this year. The MS version has the new NGC FIRST RELEASE label. Now I dont know what that really means or what the difference is from the EARLY RELEASE tag. But to quote NGC...Use this special NGC designatio

anyone else who is interested. Greetings Collectors & Friends While I have had to sell some of my beloved 999 bars off, I still have a couple. But even though I think that in 3-5 years all of us will look back and remember when silver went to $49+ and backed off to $28 and change. I did sell some furniture and put half towards the bills (which just keep right on coming every month, even though I don't have but a single credit card and it's an American Express used only for an emergency w

To continue to chats Kerry, It was a blessing to "FINALLY" read a post from you. We have missed you around here --FOR SURE--. I did not find the silver to gold ratio at the end of your journal which was a favorite to see on a regular basis. The pic of the Franklin Cameo is a killer. What a beautiful piece. Take Care my Friend----Keep up the journals. Later----Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Thank you All for your Prayers & Your Generosity!!!

I have met quite a few people down through the years, but none of these "so called" friends come close to the friendships I have developed here at the C.S. There are several of you that I consider being in my top 5 of all time "best friends". Greetings Collectors, My last journal entry was on June 7th 2011 and wow it doesn't seem like it was that long ago. It was a posting of a coin I bought at the annual Jacksonville Coin show that has always been the last weekend in May. I plan on attend

... Giving NGC the Business! Coin Journal for the week of 03/26/2012 through 04/01/2012Well, what a week it has been. Many of the auction items I won have been flowing in, and going right back out to NGC for grading. These are the raw coins that I picked out as nice coins at great prices. Most will be flipped to support the sets I am working on... every dollar counts! Pouring everything into this process, I hope to be able to afford the more expensive coins I need to complete more #1 sets this

9/11 Medal For a Song

Thanks to Ebay and Modern coin Mart Folks, Just closed an Ebay auction that had me winning a postpaid MS69 NGC 9/11 Memorial Medal, Philadelphia Mint, for 49 dollars plus change. I had been outbid on two others within the last couple of days so it was nice to get this exquisite piece for less than 50 Dollars. I have wanted one since they were first issued but knew, as with most mint products, that patience would lead to a much better price than the mints price. Modern Coin Mart seems to ha

Garys April Coin of the Month

The coin featured this month comes from Peru and completes my three part series on the Seated National Personifications. Some time ago, I remember Collectors Society member Jackson opining about a Peruvian gold coin he won at auction almost by accident. What caught my eye about this coin though is that with a few exceptions, it resembles the Seated Liberty motif on our coins. After reading Jacksons post, I thought to add a coin like his to my Inspirational Ladies custom set. However, I did not

Crazy points system

Could someone please help me understand? I was going through the coin explorer in Washington quarters looking at members pictures at the bottom of the page.I came across the 1976D,the two pictures at the bottom of the page were both MS67 but they had different scores. It appears that in the 65 to 98 set it scores 348 points but in the quarter dollar type set(inc 20 c) the same coin only scores 304 points.I thought points were given to a coin regardless of what set it is in.could someone explain

A very new collectors Journal Entry

I've always had an interest in coins, but never persued the desire . . . 'till now. I'm not big on writing in journals, on blogs, etc., yet thought it may be nice to record the development of a coin collector from scratch. And so, herewith, I begin. I've this old black case I've had since I was a kid with a mish-mash of old foreign coins that my step-dad gave me. I remember going through them trying to figure out where they all were from, what denominations they were, putting them in plastic c

New Addition

I added this hard to find coin ... just a few days ago. It is one of only 17 graded by NGC as MS68RD and top pop. I have been looking for quite a while. Thanks to hunter's gold for the heads up on this coin. It never came up in any of my searches but he alerted me of the coin with a couple of days left in the auction and I was able to acquire it with little problem. With this addition, I am now about 900 points short of taking over 7th place in the 1959-current Lincoln Memorial set ranki

Aloha

An Hawaiian idea for my new custom set .... As most of you are aware, I have a keen interest in coins, medals and tokens from Hawaii. Stage 1 of my Hawaii Statehood Medal collection is complete. The next stage is to collect each of the 17 remaining variations. The gold variations will be extremely tough to locate and obtain. In the meantime, I have set up an intermediate goal for a Territory of Hawaii Souvenir Set. The time period is set (Territory of Hawaii). The specific items to collec

Liberation of the Philippines: Manila The Approach March (Picture of XIV Corps Crossing Heavy Pontoon Bridge)

The photo attached to this Journal entry was taken by my father in early February 1945 during the approach march to Manila. The Central Plains of Northern Luzon are crossed by many unfordable rivers. The main bridges over these rivers were destroyed by the Japanese to slow the American advance. One of the major problems the XIV Corps faced during the drive to Manila was logistical in nature, deriving from the speed of the advances, the distances covered, the chronic shortages of motor transp

NGC MS67RD 1962 Lincoln Memorial

Slight rainbow toning of the obverse and the reverse. Hi everyone. I just added this very nice example of a NGC MS67RD 1962 Lincoln Memorial. NGC population of 16 with none graded higher. Both the obverse and reverse of this coin exhibit some rainbow toning which I am not a big fan of on Lincoln Memorials but this one caught my eye. What do you all think of the toning? I think it is the only toned coin like this in my collection and I personally like it. As always, thanks for looking and

California Mystery Medal Update...

A number of opinions exist concerning the "mystery" medal about which I wrote an earlier journal entry Well, there were a number of opinions about the "mystery" California medal which appeared in an earlier journal entry. One person thought is was a modern (dremell) alteration to a 1925 California Diamond Jubilee Medal. Most folks believed that is was an alteration of the 1925 medal. Malcolm had an interesting theory that unsold 1925 fobs/medals were reconfigured for use at the 1937 Golden

End Of March Update

Silver lining from NGC's decision Hi all, I have been busy the last few weeks. Since NGC made the decision to not allow PCGS in the World Registry sets, I have been going through my sets; I have deleted some, rearranged some others and made a few more custom sets. Quite possibly there is a silver lining to all of this, at least for me, it gives me fewer competitive sets to focus on. Also, I think it will upgrade some of the grades of coins I purchase which always helps, and hopefully I wil
