California Gold Rush Medals

Collecting California Gold Rush medals can be an interesting and enjoyable pasttime I just came across a nice gilt medal which celebrates the Semi-Centennial of the California Gold Rush (1848-1898). The obverse of the medal depicts a 49'er using a "rocker" to search for gold. The reverse shows a covered wagon pulled by a team of oxen. I have not seen one of this type before. Thought folks who have an interest in the California Gold Rush might enjoy this piece. Later. Cal Gold Token Guy

A busy week for my sets

My first proof set was added at a cost of 50% off value. Friends, I read plenty over the last few months about collectors investing more in their sets than they were worth. I have had Todd Peters sets for sale for three weeks and the price got down to 50% off. A couple guys took advantage of this great opportunity and soon I was getting a hunger for a set myself. I'm not a proof coin collector but to get a complete set from 1999 all pf70UC coins and a multi-holder to boot. There is one coin in

Nickel Type Set Change?

What is your opinion? I wrote NGC about the nickel type set... currently, the set has only one slot for the Westward Journey nickels of 2004 and 2005. Kathy answered saying that they consider the WWJ series as a single type, and that most type set collectors would want it that way. I think that two distinctly different designs on a coin, regardless of the series name, each deserve a slot in the set. She suggested I write and get the opinions of the other collectors, so here I am. I want to hav

Knowledge is Power

I was fortunate to have help in entering the coin collecting hobby... I did collect coins as a child, but it was more of a curiosity than a hobby. While serving in the US Air Force, I was given an opportunity to learn from a few coin dealers in Montana. Montana is a silver state and silver dollars were very plentiful. A Montana coin dealer told me to read up on the subject before buying any coins. After reading the Comprehensive Catalogue and Encyclopedia of U. S. Morgan and Peace Silver Do

Speaking of labels and such

is a CAC sticker really anything more than "another label" Over the course of the last few months we have discussed all the various labels one can acquire for a particular coin. Although we have discussed this subject briefly in the distant past I thought I would open it up to see if new opinions have been formed or old ones changed. The subject I am talking about is the CAC sticker. Does it really add any value to a particular coin in the eyes of the grassroots collector ? In my opin

Kudous to the U.S. Mint for a great new product

2012 Birth Set - The perfect Baby Shower Gift! I revieved an email from the U.S. Mint this morning announcing their "2012 Birth Set". This is a great addition to the mints product line and a wonderful way to introduce numismatics to individuals who do not normally purchase mint products. My daughter is expecting her first child in August and a "2012 Birth Set" will be the perfect Baby Shower Gift. "A precious memento to mark the arrival of a newborn baby in 2012, is the first Birth Set issue

THANKS!!!!

IT IS WHAT IT IS. Thanks to everyone who wrote or replied to my last posting. YES! I do buy the coin for my other collections that are and some that are not slabbed. As far as the 25th Anniversary goes, I felt it would be neat to try and get all the labels and mint marks. I thought the 2011 ASE was a good time for collecting, and I made it fun as well as expensive. When I was a kid I collected baseball cards, marbles, pop bottle caps. I guess that I am guilty here also for not collecting

Tragic Event

A family is murdered for gold. Folks, just got wind of a horrible tragedy that occured in Louisiana where a family of 3 were murdered during a home invasion robbery on 18 February. The murderers, 5 of whom have been arrested, stole a safe with approximatly 500K worth of gold coins. Apparently one of the murderers was a former employee of the owner. AT LAST!!!!

It took over a year. I have finally done it. I have captured the elusive 2011 Silver Eagle in the Standard Brown label. I have been told that this label was a mistake because they were wanting the 25th Anniversary brown labels instead, and these got out into circulation. One dealer told me about 8 months ago that he got some and was given the chance to return them or keep them. He kept his and I had one on order through him and suddenly they were sold out. This now brings my collection to

Hawaii State Quarter error

Hawaii collector finds error coins Howdy friends, Anyone see the AP article on Hawaii State Quarter error coins this morning? It does not mention wether they are MS or PF but I'll have to check mine when I get home. I check my home town paper occasionally and saw this article this morning,   HONOLULU (AP) -- A Honolulu coin collector says there's a problem with Hawaii's commemorative quarters.   Collector Joe Au-Franz tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser ( http://bit.ly/AqvsQL ) that

Old guy decides to jump into the deep end of coin collecting with very mixed results.

Ignorance is not bliss! I`m a retired civil servant. I am not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. I conservatively invested in the stock market most of my adult life. My overall experience was mixed, but I did alright. I made a reasonable amount of profit over the years. Considerably more than I would have achieved from simple interest earning investments. I`ve been retired for 10 years now. In 2009, and quite by accident, I pushed a wrong button on my TV`s remote control.

Hawaii Statehood Medals!

Did you know that several medals were struck in 1959/1960 to commemorate Hawaii's admission as the 50th state to the Union? As part of Hawaii's admission as the 50th state to the United States of America, several medals were stuck in celebration during the years 1959 (statehood) and 1960 (50th star added to US flag). Many of these medals have low mintage numbers. There are 5 medal design types that expands to 22 variants. Each of these Hawaii statehood medals are also collected in other num

Slim Pickings

Lincoln suprise while shopping yesturday

Some where a daddy or, mommy is not happy right now. While shopping at our local Walmart yesturday I received in my change a 1958 Red Lincoln Cent, in what I would consider a quality condition. What a suprise. I thought I had won the lottery. All I could think of it of all of the cents that I could have received, I was given this really nice 1958. As I often do, when I come across a historic find, from my days of being a local historian, I headed to my local high end cigar shop, with a b
