Gino's delimna I Understand...

Ain't That Right......... I remember when the 5 Oz Hockey Pucks came out @ $279.95 a piece. I bought 3 of those(Hotsprings) and the next set(3)Yosemites @ same cost 279.95 Silver was up around $45 then, and melt would have been about $586.00. Now I had to send them in for grading. Joining NGC was about $120 to be a member. Postage Both Ways, Photos of the Imaged Coins (3 a piece) Grading fee $17 each, and 25 a piece to be encapsulated. Mine All came back 69 grade. coinsbygary.com is online

A web site where I make the rules is on line. Now I have the prerogative of putting raw coins in my sets if I so desire! Greetings all, when NGC issued eviction notices to all the PCGS world coins in the competitive registry, I had wished that I had my own web page so that I could display my coins as complete sets. Its not the loss of points that annoys me as much as its the structure of my sets where one coin description is dependent on another. When I wrote of my dilemma in a post, I got a

That is what is called Cost of Doing Business... ... and it is something that must be taken into account when buying and selling. I know it sucks, but thats how it is. In fact, look at other auctions, both digital and real world... I see premiums as high as 18 percent. Now, with that being said, the bullion coins are tied to the metals... I got $55-$60 for my graded PF69UC ASEs back when silver was $40 an ounce... I got $40-$50 for my ungraded ASEs as well. Now that silver has dropped, you c

Re BUY BUY BUY

Words of wisdom MV, I agree with you totally which is why 60% of my coins are pre 1965 and many coins are from 1800s. Of which most have gone up in value and a few have stayed. I do collect some moderns but I try to get the best grade. If you really like a modern series you can get good prices in 69s but when 2000 more grade at 69 well, the price drops. So enjoy collecting them and expect the value to drop. It is not about the money you spend. Its about the money you buy. It is coin collecting

BUY BUY BUY!

Classic U.S. Gold and Silver Coins! For Thane, Six Mile Rick and anyone else out I would argue that Classic Silver and Gold U.S. coins are timeless works of art. Yes you can collect them for the value of their metal, but then you are likely missing the true beauty they hold. I am not suggesting anyone overpay for coins or that coins values won't go up and down. I am suggesting you collect coins because you love coins and they can be an investment too. As many know the basic problem will mos

I Am Stoked!!!

And very appreciative of the chance to purchase..... Folks, I am bursting with excitement over my opportunity to purchase a full set of MS/PF69 ASE 25th Anniversary coins from Jeff, NASF Firefighter. Although i was loathe to admit it, the inability to get one of those sets from the Mint was nagging at my poor collector gut. Between Jeffs more than fair price and the Internal Revenue Service tax return, the opportunity could not be passed. I have already set up my Registy Set to hold these

Adding Sets to the List?

How do we get NGC to add sets to the world coin list? I have a couple of Bulgarian coins graded by NGC, and would love to be able to have a competitive set as I add more. Does anyone know the process for nagging NGC to add a set to the list? Has anyone ever done this before? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

Newest addtion to my collection

If you going to jump, you might as well try to jump as high as you can. After six months of learning the basics of coin collecting I am now an Expert; with a capital _ E _. Well, ok, maybe not an expert but, at least now I know in which direction I was on, should be on and most importantly, know where I am heading. I received my two Sacagawea $1 NGC Proof 70 coins today. Graded by NGC. Many have argued that they are the best third-person grading service out there, in the coin world. I ag

Lunar Proof Complete - Another 10 Year Saga

1/2, 1 & 2 oz Australian Lunar Proofs Another set finally completed after years of hunting and bidding on coins. My Australian Lunar 1/2, 1 & 2 oz Proof Sets were finally completed with the purchase of the 3 coin Lunar Ox set, for some reason proving the most difficult to get. Glad I started 10+ years ago, couldn't afford them today!

Selling Full proof sets is tough

I have decided to take a easier rout Friends, I have been trying to sell proof sets for two weeks now.1999 to 2009 all NGC pf70UC. I got offers for separate coins but no full set offers. I finally broke down and listed the sets for cherry pickers in the chats money-market. Any coin for the proof sets now 30% off until Friday which is when I will be at the coin show and hopefully sell or trade all of them. Get the hard ones before they are gone. Numismatic Geneaology!

Specials coins get the special treatment... Today I sent in some very special coins to be conserved and graded. These will not be very high grades, in fact, I hope they will grade in the fine to very fine range. They are special for another reason. First, here are some of the coins I sent in: 1899 Indian Head Cent 1852 Braided Hair Large Cent 1854 Braided Hair Large Cent These are part of a very special custom set I am going to put together... what I will call my Numismatic Geneaology

A Handful of Additions to my Modern Commemorative Set

Went on a buying spree!! Good morning everybody, Yep, that is how I would put it...A buying spree! And I sure did enjoy it. I added 5 more coins to my collection from Heritage and Ebay. Everything seemed to fall together at one time...meaning the coins I was looking and at the right prices. The only issue I am having is trying to find Proof strikes. They are available on ebay but only with BIN and way over market value. Also, nothing has been showing up on Heritage or Teletrade lately.

Black Diamond - An American Icon

It ain't easy being an American "Star"! Millions of buffalo once roamed America's western plains. But by the late 1800s they had been hunted and slaughtered to the brink of extinction. A new nickel helped raise awareness of the plight of the buffalo, even if that wasn't the coin's designer-James Fraser's intention. For him, the buffalo symbolized the "winning of the West," and provided a "perfect unity of theme" with the Native American chief on the other side of the coin. Nostalgia may have a

Problems with getting my Journal entries to post on the Chat Boards - Repost of my Journal entry re the new NGC

My last two Journal entries did not appear on the Chat Boards. For that reason I am reposting my Journal entry regarding the new NGC High Resolution (300 DPI) imaging service. My NGC High Resolution (300 DPI) images are back. See how they compare with the old Low Resolution (72 DPI) images, NGC Photo-Proofs, and PCGS True-View imaging. The bottom line is you get what you pay for. Dont expect the High Resolution (300 DPI)images to be anywhere near the quality of auction catalog photos, NGC

Introducing my newest Custom Set - 1908 USA/Phillipines Proof Set

Only 500 USA/Philippines proof sets were produced in 1908. The coins in this set have an average grade of PF 64.29 and range in grade rarity from R-6 to R-8.9. Most Journal regulars are probably familiar with my Competitive Registry Sets. My USA/Philippines Type Set http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=51257 recieved a 2011 Best Presented Set Award. I also have a number of less known but equally interesting Custom Sets. As a matter of practice I

What is Wrong With This Picture

A costly mistake avoided Hi everyone. Within the last 4 months an NGC MS68RD 1964 Lincoln Memorial sold for $2000 and at the time the seller said it had a population of 1. Shortly thereafter, this example came up for sale and of course I was interested in adding this coin to my Lincoln Memorial Circulation sets. I check NGC Population Report and it did show a population of 2. The seller of this coin listed it several times on Ebay and would drop the price each time it did not sell and re-l

Wow.... What a Difference.

After the PCGS coins were removed from the Registry it caused a lot of rank changes. My Half-Mark set suffered several thousand points but I'm finding it really hard to build a set without the PCGS additions. Some of the people really dropped off as if their entire sets were PCGS filled. Of course I'm sure some were removed on purpose. I miss those PCGS half-marks but I do still OWN them. Given that the PCGS coins are out of the game for now here at NGC I've opted to pursue a couple of other
