Slipping Fast

Just when I take a break... Just when I take a break, everyone goes out and finds coins to buy and submarine my coveted 200th ranking, now I have disappeared into the fog at 213. Geezo, I have bills to pay and 7 or 8 children to feed, a travel agent with two kids in college who needs my money. Not much left for coins. Guess I will have to get a 2nd job. So as I peruse the want ads, will you folks stop being so loose with your money and allow me a breather so I can catch up to my old rank

Cherrypickin' Mint Sets

Junk, followed by more junk, then along comes a coin that makes the thousands of other coins worth it... I go through hundreds of raw coins every month on the modern side looking for that next great rarity. Generally speaking, most modern mint sets are full of what I would call junk - less than MS 65 grades and about 5% of what I see coming out of rolls or mint sets is barely worthy of putting in the soda machine at work... It can become depressing and boring, wait did I say that out loud?!?

2010 St. George Russian Silver

2010 St. George Russian Silver The silver Russian Saint George the Victorious coins were first issued on January 11, 2009. The obverse features the emblem of the Central Bank of Russia--a double-headed eagle with wings down--and is inscribed with "? ???" (Bank of Russia), " ??" (Three rubles), indications of the precious metal content and its fineness, and the year of issue followed by the mint mark. The reverse features an image of Saint George and the Dragon. instant buyer's remorse

I had not received the coin yet and I had the package ready to ship it back! I have always liked the Washington silver quarters. I was born in 1958, so well circulated coins were still available in pocket change in the mid 1960's when I started to collect as a kid. I collected the usual things you could get out of change- Silver Roosevelt and Mercury dimes, Jefferson Nickels, wheat pennies. You could not get close to a full collection from change in any of these, but enough different date/mint

Mid April Happenings

3 more Sacs plus pictures Well, coin purchases have been very few the last 6 weeks or so. I did add 3 silver ATB proof quarters; Mt. Hood, El Yunque and Denali to my competitive set. Plus, as my teaser says, I added 3 Sac proofs to my set; namely the 2004, 2010 and 2011. I must admit I like the changing reverses; really fits in with my collecting theme. I mentioned in an earlier journal I have really been sorting through my coins. Since NGC made the "No PCGS" in the world sets, I decided to

2012 Star-Spangled Gold $5 Proof and Uncirculated

For all posterity ... I had a phone conversation with one of the museum curators at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine in Baltimore, Maryland. They finally received the coins, authentication paperwork and gifting letter. As he puts it, your name and gifts will be in the museum collection and shared "for all posterity". I never thought about it that way. He indicated there is a plan for the coins to be displayed in the near future as part of the rush of visitors attending the

2012 Collecting Goal Achieved with Room to Spare!

First year collecting the fabulous Carson City Morgan set very satisfying and frustrating at the same time! Hey All- Well, I am very proud of the progress made YTD on my Morgan CC collection. My goal was to crack the top 75 my first year of collecting my personal favorite coin of all! Now, this wouldn't be a big thing if I were deep in the pockets, but nothing could be further from the truth! My wife and I have made decisions like "go away for the weekend or look at this coin" and others

2004 P Roosevelt Dime MS 68 FT

Still catching up on recent additions. This is another coin that has plagued me for about 2 years. I filled in all the other coins from 1999-2004 in MS 68 FT, however I couldn't pull the trigger to pay $300+ for this coin in PCGS plastic. That coin still resides on the Bay. I settled for an NGC MS 67 FT, but just wasn't happy with that coin. I looked through and bought as many mint sets or mint set coins as I could find. For the first 20 or so months the best I thought I could muster was a 67

1981 P Roosevelt Dime MS 68 FT

Top Pop Gem I'm way behind with my journals for my Roosevelt Dime set. This is a coin that has alluded me for about 2 years. I started the hunt for both 81 coins, thinking that they should be relatively easy to find in gem grade, due to the fact that 1981 was a great year for strikes and thus full torch coins. About 80% of the coins I look at make the FT designation, which is unheard of for almost all years of the Roosevelt dime. Year: 1981 P Grade: MS 68 FT Registry Points: 2009 NGC P

First Entry

Two Morgans... Today I saw the Grades of my first two submissions.I was a bit disappointed, but it is what it is. The 1880o came back au 55and the 91 s ms61.I guess I have much more to learn about grading because my grades were 62 to 63 and 64 plus and of course hoping for even better. One positive is that in the future I can compare the closeness of other coins which will help me and my close collector friends. Would anyone care to share their experiances and lessons learned...?

A "66" for my "26"

My NCS conservation results ... Fee to conserve my 1959 Hawaii Statehood medal was $21. Shipping back to me was an additional $19.70. NGC grading fee was set at $42 which included an oversize holder fee. As for the results, my medal (serial number 26) graded MS 66 and is now residue free! I am well pleased with the service provided by both NCS and NGC. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

US Postal Service Has Foiled My Dream

Or at least put a temporary hold on it. I Hope. I am a true believer in the old bit of numismatic advice that you should buy the book before you buy the coin. In my many years as a collctor, I have created a modest but, for me, very useful library covering every kind of coin I collect and even a few outliers like my copy of Counterfeit Confederate Currency and the Langbord hoard. The one book I have wanted for many years is Q. David Bowers, American Coin Treasure and Hoards. But the price ha

A few grams of 10k gold Pays Off

Yard Sale Find For $10.00 Hi Everyone. I have been going to flea markets and yard sales since I was a child. My grandmother on my fathers side was in what they called the junk business back in her day and she would buy unclaimed luggage, storage units and estates. She would then in turn sell her items at the flea market or her thrift store. She had a good eye and I enjoyed spending time with her looking for treasure as I called it back then and searching through all the junk would fascinat

All the time has paid off.

Searching roll after roll and coin after coin has produced two coins I could never afford graded. Hello collectors. I am a great fan of the Ike dollar, when in high grades I should say. The Ike dollar has been known as an ugly coin. With the number of knicks, scratches and poor strikes I would agree but, when I look at a high grade Ike it does begin to change my opinion. I started collecting the Ike dollar when the mint started making the S.B.A. dollar, it was also the same time I started c
