Garys May Coin of the Month (couldnt wait to post this)

This months Coin of the Month is a PCGS MS-63, 1936-S, Columbia, South Carolina Sesquicentennial Commemorative Half-Dollar. I am dedicating this post to BeawChan because he has a collection of classic commemorative half-dollars and to Six Mile Rick because he lives in South Carolina. In addition, these two individuals are good friends who have contributed much to Collectors Society. In 1936, the United States Mint issued an unusually large assortment of commemorative half-dollars. I believe th

Perfect?

In who's eye? Here is a pic of my latest aquisition. MS69 W Silver Eagle. I have looked this coin over and over with a 10x glass, and can find no faults. Used diffferent light, angles and such. It seems all my MS69 W burnished Eagles are totally problem free. Am I lucky, is it the burnished blank that doesn't let small imperfections show? I don't know. Perhaps some of you more experienced members can help. I have MS70s not burnished that should be 69s or even 68s. I know grading is a

Trying to keep/catch up.

Puff wheeze wimper Well, looking for one coin to try to regain my sub 200 collection number. I am looking to do it on one base hit, and not have to go searching for numerous coins. I found an 1860 $2.50 Liberty Head, Old Reverse in MS64. The guy wants $10,500.00 for it. I looked thru the NGC Price guide, and came up with no information. Can anyone out there help me as to its value? Sure would appreciate any help. Capt. Brian PS added in later, redbook shows MS63 at $12,000.00 To

Wow 1895 Hawaiian Reginald Huth Gold

An auction with rare Hawaiian coin ... Forsythe Collection I enjoy reading auction descriptions. Many of the high end auction companies really do their research to describe and point out the coin's or medal's rarity. This is especially true for the extreme rare Hawaii pieces. The example I recently seen is the 1895 Regina Huth $20 Gold of Princess Kaiulani (Lot 1880). There are also any other rarities in this auction. They are part of the upcoming May Pre-Long Beach Auction held by Ira and

Oooooooooo Pictures

Finally added pics. Well it has taken some tinkering and a little cussing but I was finally able to get some pics of my Morgans that I am pleased to show. Now that I may have figured it out, I will try to photograph proof coins next. I did give it a try on the few Kennedy half proofs that I have.

O Happy Day

Treasure is Found Well Folks, I finally received my copy of David Bowers, American Coin Treasures and Hoards, today. As some of you may recall, this coveted, by me at least, treasury of numismatic history had been cruelly ripped, OK a little bit to melodramatic, had been lost by the Post office almost a month ago. Here is the sequence of events: 04 April - Mailman leaves Delivery Notice at front screen door. 07 April - Attempt to pick up, package cannot be found Promised callback, no

Video on Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Release Day Ceremony

First purchaser requested his identity not be shared as he snuck out of work to purchase the coins... Great video on the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Release Day Ceremony. It was funny to see me in the video...I was there! All sixteen (16) gold coins sold out at the ceremony. 2000 West Point Millennium Coin

Why is this coin NOT in the NGC price guide? In 2000, the Mint issued the "United States Millennium Coinage and Currency Set" which included a 2000 Silver Eagle bullion coin minted at West Point (but without a "W" mintmark), a 2000 Denver-minted Sacagawea Dollar with a burnished finish, and an uncirculated 1999 series one-dollar bill with a serial number beginning with the numbers "2000". The sets sold out at the issue limit of 75,000 units. Here's the real question why is this coin listed a

I Am A Completist

And I just confirmed it to myself yet again. Well folks, a while back I purchased the 2011-P 9/11 Memorial Medal because A. I love the design and the underlying theme, and B. the price was right. As soon as i received the Philadelphia mint example, I knew I had to have the West Point example as well. Oddly enough, although the West Point issues have a higher mintage, they also remain slightly more expensive on the secondary market. I guess this is due to the mystique of the "Fort Knox" of Sil

National Numismatic Collection

I once took a date to see the the National Numismatic Collection ... http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/index.cfm One of the best things about living in the Washington DC metropolitan area is the richness in historical artifacts. I intentionally look for new experiences in the area. As such, I also like to share my interests. On one occasion I took a date to visit the National Numismatic Collection to share my interest in coins. She was enthralled with my hobby after viewing some of
