NGC MS67RD 1971S Lincoln Memorial Population of 25

Replaced the MS66RD example Hi everyone. This is the latest addition to my Lincoln Memorial set a NGC MS67RD 1971S example with a population of 25 with none graded higher. This particular coin starts a series of Lincoln Memorials through the early 1980's where most of the top population coins only receive 20 registry points. Not sure why this is and hopefully NGC will adjust the scores someday. This particular example has lots of mint luster with fire red tendrils fanning out towards the e

Are they crashing?? Wow I see that gold is going below $1600 an oz. tomorrow and silver is perching at $29.00. Did they find a few good mines or is the value of our dollar really worth something again?? Sometimes it is hard to keep up with all the bureaucracy involved to come to such conclusions. Submitted five coins to NGC for grading

My first five coins to NGC for grading were given to my post office this afternoon. . . Do you think they have arrived and been graded, yet? Ok, maybe I am just a little anxious. Just a little. I can relate to all of the posts where collectors say they are eager to know their coin's official grades. For me, it started the moment the postal clerk took my box of coins. Here are the coins that were submitted: 1889, '86 and '81 Morgans; 1921 Peace $1 and finally a nice red 1956 Cent. I p

Didn't make the coin show... :-(

but I did get some coin stuff in this weekend!! My shoulder was hurting too bad to drive an hour and a half each way to get to this show, which I do usually enjoy. So, my wife and I decided to do a little pickin' at local antique stores. I specifically chose a small town about 30 minutes away to check out, because I knew that had some coins in several of these shops. Perused many over priced coins (seller's must be in love with their coins as many were 20-30% over Red Book value - geez...)a

The Results are In and So So

The moment I have been waiting for has arrived and I received my 1876 Centennial Medal back from NCS fully graded in an oversize holder at MS-61. Greetings all, a little more than one month ago I submitted an 1876 Centennial Medal that I had just purchased, to NCS for conservation. The medal struck in white-metal displayed black, almost goop-like residue on all the high points of the relief. The effect of this residue seemed to deaden the details of the devices on the medal and in particular,

My First Wheat Back Cents!

arrived after a great day on the river! Howdy Friend, Well, it's been a great couple of spring days here in my part of the Oregon country and my neighborhood is buzzing with weed eaters and lawn mowers. I started the racket as soon as the sun hit the grass trying for some significant completion so I could take a river dinner trip in the afternoon. Had lots of fun and enjoyed a wonderful 4 hour 36 mile jet boat ride on the river with my wife, brother in-law and some friends. We saw tons of wi

Coin in hand

I just received my 1942D Washington quarter today Checked the mailbox today and there it was!!Teletrade shipped on Wednesday and I received it on Saturday, pretty fast from California to Florida with standard shipping! The quarter looks way better in hand than the picture. It has a very sharp strike and a great luster with just a little golden toning around the rim!!!! I finally saw the grades on the very first 5 coins I have had graded.

Perfect? Almost perfect? Not good at all? It was just ok. Nuthin' to write home about but nothing to be ashamed of either. If it is not perfect I should get an explanation as to why it isn't perfect. Does anyone know if I will? That's not to say mine weren't perfect, but,... if they weren't is what I mean.... Will they tell me why? I want to know details. I hope they tell what makes them perfect, too. I can't wait to get them back with all their brothers and sisters! I know the

Which world coins are collected the most???

A question I ask myself sometimes. Friends and Society, I was checking out a few other sets in the club as I do once in a while. The thought came again--- How many sets are graded in the countries where NGC and PCGS have set up camp? If you have a world collection and don't mind letting us know your competition, let us know the number of collectors in your series that you are working on. I have found a few sets with only 1 collector for competition and only one coin out of 29 for the series

NGC / Ebay / Pay Pal reduced revenue

Did anyone notice that the Proof W Silver Eagle on ebay are nonexistent? Higher grading fees, higher Ebay fees and Pay Pal fees are the reason I stopped. NGC discounts to Modern Coin Mart gives the dealer a chance to lower the prices on Ebay and sell them higher on their web site. Ok it was plain to see that the discounts given to dealers from NGC gives them an ability to to cut everyone else out of the competition. The Silver Eagle PF70 was 99.00 each on ebay and 109 on their web site. The

Loupe = Therapy?!?

Can't imagine this actually happened to me... Found a way, although a painful one, to get my wife to actually ask me to look at some coins. Generally speaking, she doesn't understand the passion I have for coins, she gets the collecting part and really likes the artistry and beauty of coins, but that's were it ends for her. This past weekend while playing touch football at our annual church picnic, I slipped and fell on my shoulder after catching a pass. It took my breath away and I played

A Sad Day

A Man is defined by what he does for the less fortunate. Folks, I know this is off-topic but I have to say the death of Junior Seau, from whatever cause, has shaken me to the core. Not because he was a successful football player, but entirely because of what he did with his fame. I have lived in the Oceanside CA area for the last 30 years and for most of that time, Mr. Seau was a man dedicated to helping the youth of Oceanside by raising hundreds of thoursands of dollars for the Boys an

MS Nickels - Six Full Steps

Its not easy finding these in higher grades with full steps. Its been awhile since I posted anything to the journal or have been able to do much collecting since my unemployment beginning of the year. It seems the market place is not as eager to hire a Vietnam-Era Vet over 55. As the line goes from the movie "Youth is wasted on the wrong people"... Here is my lastest attempt for those nickels: 001 1988 D 5C MS 66 6FS 002 1989 P 5C MS 66 6FS 003 1989 D 5C MS 65 6FS

It's Greek to me...

Been far too long since my last journal. I realize it has been months since my last journal post. Despite this, I still regularly read all of the journals here, and I have enjoyed seeing everyone's collections grow. I can't believe it's May already...where the first 4 months of this year went I'm not sure. For this post I just wanted to share a little good news. When I first started my thematic horses set last year (on April 1, 2011 I believe), one of the first things I did was go through

The sun has come out in D.C. and my coins are coming back!

I saw one of my coins on television! ....at least I think I did. I'm a first-timer at having coins graded by NGC. It's kind of like sending your first-born child off to school and the anxiety of waiting for them to come back. You are just certain SOMETHING will go wrong. Well, I am certain that nothing will go wrong and I look forward to seeing the coins and the grades they were given. The coins looked nice and shiny to me, but they all look good to me! Thank you all for

It's a gloomy old day here in the DC metropolitan area

There are only 2 things that could brighten the day: 1. Sunshine 2. My very first coins could return from NGC gradingIt's about time within a day or so. The waiting is the worst. If the grades aren't good then it will be the worst, then. I keep telling myself not to take it personally if the grades are bad. After all, I didn't make the coin and I haven't had it in my posession for very long. Yup the waitin is the worst. I hope all of you coin people are having a great day! I'm not
