A DEDICATION TO DAD

Happy Fathers' Day, Dad!!! All day, I've pondered what I wanted to say to Dad. Today is a beautiful day. I watched TV; went for a drive with my wife; cooked dinner; and frequently thought about Dad. A number of great thoughts and memories floated through my mind, but nothing grabbed me as a keynote for this journal entry. Then, at 9:35 tonight, it struck me! It wasn't ONE thing about Dad that was so significant in my thoughts. It is the sum total of small, seemingly insignificant experie

Summer duldrums...

Slow going since summer has come on full strength in the South. I find it increasingly difficult to devote time to my hobby in the summer, too many other distractions and long days. Not that I mind the long days, mind you, but it does cut into coin time. Chores like mowing the lawn, trimming bushes, swinging on the patio, walking (need to do more of this) and grilling out seem to invade the time I spend on coins during the other seasons. Thinking about a new submission now, as I have about 1

Minted in the U.S.A.

Another unexpected acquisition. In April of this year I wrote a journal entry about bidding on a coin, fully expecting to lose, only to be pleasantly surprised at the end to find myself the high bidder. This acquisition is the result of another such auction. Certified El Salvadoran C.A.M. Pesos are almost always available on eBay as a "Buy It Now." These are generally offered well above FMV, so when a true auction comes along, it's time to step up. When this one appeared, I registered a bid

Picked up a 82 No P MS66FT Rosie this week

Great/Bad Week Good Morning, Just got home last nite from my latest chemo treatment. That's the Bad news! Another chemo. While I was doing this treatment I spent as much time as possible on the Internet. Most of the waiting areas at Mayo have 2 or more computers in them. At least the floors that deal with cancer do. I was looking for coins, looking at cars, looking at CS, reviewing future interests (purchases). I am doing fairly well with my Roosevelt set. Always looking for the next t

Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection - 1906 Ten Centavos PCGS PR66 (1714 Registry Points)

"Evenly and beautifully blue toned obverse, more brilliant but lovely shades of golden toning on reverse. An exquisite offering of a rare coin" One item that was high on my want list from the Pineda Collection was a beautifully toned large size Ten Centavos in PR66 or above. The Pineda auction actually had four coins that met that criterion. They were Lot # 5560 -1903 Ten Centavos PR66 (1278 Registry Points), Lot #5564 -- 1904 Ten Centavos PR66 (1423 Registry Points), Lot # 5572 -- 1906 Ten

First True Impulse Buy in Over a Year

the coin had the look and was only 50% of list--but there is no set fot it As I've matured and become more disciplined in my collecting my impulsive purchases have dropped considerably. Not that impulse buying is a sign of immaturity in general- but when I first started collecting seriously, I never saw a coin I didn't want. I lost a bit of money by building complete sets quickly-even #1 registry sets- and then selling the coins for less than I bought them. I don't even want to think of the mo

No Longer Top 10

I didn't expect it to last forever When I made my last post, I had just achieved a Top 10 ranking in all of the circulation strike Walking Liberty half dollar categories. I said at the time I was sure it wouldn't last. So congratulations to mkm4mkm who recently bumped me out of the #10 spot in the full set listings (by 26 points!). My only collecting action in the last six weeks was the Heritage auction the first of June. I won one Walker (a 1946, NGC MS-67) and a couple of PF-70UC silve

First time buying from HA

Not very excited I bought my first coin from heritage auction around a 3 weeks ago. Finally received it today. As I take it out of it's packaging the first thing I notice Is the ngc holder is chipped badly and looks like It's been taken out of the holder once or twice. Then I try to add the coin to my registry, but i can't. Still registered to the last owner. I don't have very good camera, or I would show you all the holder. I guess It will get crossovered my next shipment. By the way. The coi

Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection - 1905 Five Centavos PR 65 (1623 Registry Points)

The 1905 Five Centavos is a PROOF ONLY ISSUE with a miniscule mintage of only 471 coins. Of the 471 pieces made, this has to be one of the very best. It is beautiful! I was very pleased to be the high bidder on this outstanding piece in last week's Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection Auction. All Philippine proof coins are rare particularly in GEM quality but none are rarer or more alusive than 1905 proof coins. The 2008 Allen guide book lists the 1905 Five Centavos in PF65 at $550.00 how

A few Random Observations

About the World Around Me Friends, Just thought I would gather a few thoughts tied together with the loosest of collections and make a journal entry out of them: 1. Just posted my two MS PCGS 2012 Sacagawea Dollars to complete the MS set for the year. Proof set was completed with an NGC example late last month. I must say, this year's edition of the Sacagawea is a mighty fine design that really reminds me of the "Renaissance of American Coinage" period (with kudos to RWB). The Sacagawe

I've been trying very hard lately to photograph and enter my coins

The weather was just too nice yesterday. Someone on here mentioned that they hoped for good weather to take pictures. Well, I tried and tried to get a nice picture but I couldn't get away from things reflecting off of the coin....including the camera! The light was just great, though. I finally gave up and let the trees reflect off the coins. The result was not necessarily bad. It's probably not going to win any photography awards, but I liked it. Philippine Auction of the Century Conducted at Memphis IPMS This Evening

The Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection is without doubt the finest collection of rare Philippine notes, coins, medals, and historical documents ever assembled. I just spent the last six and a half hours glued to my computer participating in the auction via Knight Live and was blown away by the many unique and Top Pop specimens. The Notes and Spanish-Philippine coins included many rare museum quality specimens and the U.S. Philippine coins and medals were truely unbelievable. The highlig

My Heritage Winnings showed up today

Funny how plans to add a top pop can change over the weekend. Friends and Society, I recently informed everyone that a sweet Roosevelt 1981-D MS68FT was on it's way to a new home. At the time I thought my house was the home right??? Well when Todd Peters got home and went through all the e-mails and read up on journals he sent me a message asking me to keep a eye out for another one. WHAT? I replied. With only 10 coins in NGC slabs I would be eligible to play the lottery and win a few bu

Great Collections coin auction Hi everyone. Last night I was following some coins on several of the auction sites. I saw this particular example NGC MS67RB 1963 Lincoln Memorial on the Great Collections auction site and notice that no one was really tracking this coin. I normally would not buy a red brown example of a coin for my competitive set but since I needed to upgrade from my current MS66RD example I could not resist. I ended up being the only bidder on this coin and for $100 and wi

Thanks, Heritage, Followup

Responses to some comments Wow. With relatively few views of my previous post, there have been more replies than usual. This is just to respond to some of those messages. First up, regarding internet speed: At the time, I was on 15/5 (megabits per sec, download/upload) FiOS service, which has been adequate for my coin activities (browsing, bidding, etc.) at the same time as both of my sons playing on-line action games, without any issues. Nevertheless, this past week I did, for other reasons
