RE; Census Updates

I Believe Its Based On The Numbers of Coins Being Sent In To Grade. Not So Much By Who Is Sending Them In. I agree that there are certain issues that have shown distinct delays in our being able to identify their market value prior to their being released to the masses, for the best profit margin attainable. If I know up front that a coin is getting graded about 6 to 1 PF70 v. Pf69, that coin automatically loses its appeal to me with regards to how much I'm going to pay for it, PF70 or not. I

NGC slow to update census

Is it because of major dealers? Anyone else notice that NGC is slow to update the census after any major dealer has had many submissions. I know that NGC had the results before end of day on Friday because the dealer was making many of the coins for sale on Ebay starting around mid-week last week. The census is a very valuable tool for all of us coin collectors to know just how many are graded. Seems to me NGC waits to keep the numbers low to please the major dealers. For examaple, If I

Grading is Subjective--But Also Done by Humans

Thought I had filled a slot with a key date except for one small detail There isn't a collector among us, who I'm sure owns at least one coin that they feel is undergraded. I feel the reason for this is due to one primary aspect of grading--that is Eye Appeal. Unfortunately grading-even by the 2 big TPG's- is always going to be subjective. All of us with any experience in the hobby understand the main criteria used in grading-contact marks, hairlines, luster, wear on circulated coins. Howeve

AND ANOTHER ONE DONE

10 years to build a set Finally finished completing my 1 oz Australia Kookaburra Complete Set. A little over ten years since I started, the final coin back from grading and now in my Registry. The Kookaburra 1999 with Portugal Privy Mark proved the most elusive of the set for me to get. Even when I went on vacation to Australia I looked at coin dealers shops and couldn't find it. Never expected to find it on eBay but that's where just about everything seems to be. Now what to do with my spre t

1628-58 India Rupee Mughal Empire KM-235.23

Can someone tell me if this coin is really damaged or was a tool used to get it out or another story Can anyone tell me something about this coin. If it is really damaged? What are the markings on the side? This is the oldest coin in my collection and I know very little about it. I bought it in Kuwait. The man said he had it in his family for over 350 years. I haggle him for it for three days. I told him it would stay in my family for as long as it was in his. I found a website t

The Other Side of the Rainbow

The reverse of this 1903 Half Centavo PR65 RB, from the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection, has beautiful multi-color (red, green, blue, and purple) toning. The toning pattern on this coin is very complex and changes as the coin is viewed from different angles. Capturing the ever changing colors of this specimen was a real challenge. Imagine trying to photograph the hologram on one of your credit cards. The photograph attached to this journal was taken outdoors using natural overcast

Don't Leave Home Without It

A find in a shop while on vacation Looking through a box in a shop while on vacation I found a hidden treasure. A 1899-P Morgan dollar toned in at least AU. See pic below. Going to send it in for certification and will have less than $50 in the coin counting certification fees. One happy collector here unless it gets details graded. Will post the grade when I get it back. Glad I packed my collecting habit in my suitcase.

Need Help from World Collectors

... because I am stumped! Many years ago, I received some coins from my mother-in-law. I was very busy at the time, and put them away for safe keeping. Today, I dragged them out to bring the ancients to a coin show for see if they were actually real Roman coins. They are genuine, but that is not what I'm speaking of today. In that batch were several old coins, most of which are silver from the late 1800s to early 1900s. The only coin I cannot identify is this one. Seems to be in Arabic -scr

First GSA Softpack Morgan is back

Finally received my 1887-O Morgan back from NGC. To remind readers, I came across this GSA Morgan by accident a few months back when the Seller at a consignment shop, thinking it was a poor condition Morgan, sold it to me for a few dollars over spot. I received the blue envelope, COA and unopened plastic coin pouch for $32.00. I submitted the coin to NGC for an array of reasons. The first, just to experience the process of submitting a GSA softpack. Another reason is to ensure the coin is c

Gorgeous Rainbow Toned Proof

This fabulous rainbow toned GEM is from the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection. The obverse has red toned central features and a rainbow of iridescent gold, red, purple, peacock blue, and green in the fields. The reverse is red, green, blue and purple toned. It is gorgeous and the pictures do not do it justice. Although this coin is technically graded as RB there is actually no brown on either the obverse or reverse, only red and gorgeous multi-color toning. There is an interesting "Beauty

Complete NGC Proof 70 Ultra Cameo Susan B. Anthony Dollar Collection

Third ever Perfect NGC complete Proof 70 Ultra Cameo Susan B. Anthony Dollar Collection Had some luck in recent weeks finding both the 1979 S Type 2 and 1981 S Type 2 Susan B. Anthony (SBA) Proof dollars in NGC graded Perfect PF 70 Ultra Cameo condition. This is only the 3rd complete prefect collection of NGC-only SBA Proof coins in the NGC Registry. Yes there are other complete SBA sets using PCGS graded coins (for however long they will still be here), but it is a major accomplishment to get

Some Custom Set Decisions

Wild west and modern... Yes, it seems like when I write journal entries, I write a bunch in a short period of time. But I am going to try now to space them out over the course of the year now and in the future. I have made one decision on my custom sets. I think everyone knows by now I love the western mints. So, in an effort to make my collecting goals a little more specific I have come to the following conclusion: My wild west series mint sets will contain those silver coins through the Ba

20K points!

A trade for an NGC 1984 D MS68RD ... went through for me yesterday and will be a 2016 point upgrade over my existing MS67RD when the coin arrives early next week (picture will be added at that time). Only 10 of these exist in NGC's registry so I am very fortunate. This coin puts me over the 20,000 point total. I'll still remain at #8 for the all coins option but I'll cut the deficit point total by more than half. Thanks to the new filtered rankings feature my set is the #3 1959-Current

Three-eyed U.S. Marine?

I know that Marines can see everything but, this new medal is off a little bit. I received my first two Montford Point Marines 1.5" Medals. I am extremely disappointed of the quality of one of them. As background, I worked as the "acting" Curator for the National Montford Point Marines Museum in the early 2000s. I organized their less then operational systems, since I was attending Undergraduate and Graduate studies in Museum design and operations at the University of North Carolina at Wil

Maybe There IS A Silver Lining

Taking the time to really look at my coins Well, I think I have most all the coins I want to send to an auction house in the custom set. I have a feeling I am going to use Teletrade, personally I think they do better with modern but this could just be a personal perception. I probably will call them Monday, I do possibly have an in because of the coins I consigned to Stacks/Bowers which did fairly well. The silver lining is I am taking the time to look, no really look, at each coin. Quite fr

Learning selling the hard way

Live auction of a good chunk of my collection tonight (Friday) Collecting coins is easy. Collecting coins on a budget is hard. Selling coins is easy. Selling coins for what they're worth is hard! This Friday night (the 20th) is the night much of my collection goes up for live auction. You can watch it here: http://www.proxibid.com/asp/Catalog.asp?aid=54963 or you can also find it through RJ's Auction Service in Scranton, KS. Much of my slab collection will get sold cheaply, if my past

Premier Silver

Silver is down and sets are still showing up. Friends, I made a run to the silver and gold store today to grab some coins. I ended up leaving with a few coins and a group of premier silver proof sets 1992 to 1998. I have checked the regular proof sets out before and these sets seem to be better high end picks on all the coins. I won't be grading or keeping these as I only run through looking for the mistakes or varieties unknown. If anyone is a collector of these sets let me know if you

Reworking Update

plus an answer to Six Mile Rick I have been busy working on my sale or trade custom set. I am up to the quarters now, I still have a long ways to go. My brother is looking at 5 coins; 2 quarters, 1 dollar commemorative and the 2 Australia Koalas. So I probably will have a log jam at the quarters until he talks to me, I think he and my sister in law are going somewhere possibly tomorrow, so I may not hear for a couple of days. Guess I can always rework the slot numbers when he lets me know. R

A Major Reworking of My Collection

Most of my PCGS coins are going, I think I've seen the writing on the wall. Before I get into the main point of this journal, I want to thank SPHanson for the trade. If you read his journal entry about finding a 1934 catalog put out by Max Mehl, it is now residing in my collection. As he wrote, this catalog is a fantastic piece of numismatic history. Max Mehl was a giant amoung dealers of his day, and I feel very fortunate to have this catalog in my collection. For those of you who may not u
