Gorgeous Rainbow Toned Proof

This fabulous rainbow toned GEM is from the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection. The obverse has red toned central features and a rainbow of iridescent gold, red, purple, peacock blue, and green in the fields. The reverse is red, green, blue and purple toned. It is gorgeous and the pictures do not do it justice. Although this coin is technically graded as RB there is actually no brown on either the obverse or reverse, only red and gorgeous multi-color toning.

There is an interesting "Beauty and the Beast" back-story regarding how I acquired this coin. Last month's Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection auction featured some amazing coins including a 1903 Half Centavo (PR66 RD) in full blazing red that I was determined to purchase. http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/JournalDetail.aspx?JournalEntryID=11642

In order to capture my prize I had to purchase a two coin lot (Lot # 5664) which also included a 1903 Half Centavo PR65 RB. From the pictures on the Lyn Knight Currency Auctions and PCGS Certification Verification web sites the 1903 Half Centavo PR65 RB appeared to be an unattractive mostly brown specimen. http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/24894108/

Normally I would have no interest in purchasing such an ugly duckling so I was somewhat upset that the auction house had bundled this "Beast" with my "Beauty". Initially my plans were to resell the "Beast" to help recoup some of my purchase price for the lot.

When I received my coins from the Dr. Greg Pineda Philippine Collection auction I was surprised and delighted to find that the ugly duckling 1903 Half Centavo PR65 RB was in fact a gorgeous beauty in her own right and a fitting companion to my 1903 Half Centavo PR66 RD. The "Beauty and the Beast" was in reality the "Beauty and the Beauty". Needless to say now that my ugly duckling has turned into a gorgeous swan there is no way that I am going to part with her.
