Any Daniel Carr Collectors?

... Just curious! I've been picking up some examples of the coins and tokens minted at the Moonlight Mint over the past year... I really like the look of the fantasy coins and tokens... and I think they add some whimsy to my collection. I just received my 2012 Liberty Head / Eagle silver tokens, and they look so sweet. I wouldn't mind if our current coinage looked like these... anyone else a fan of DC? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below

Sometimes you Just Have to LOOK

A lazy rainy afternoon looking in an old box of coins always has a surprise or two ........I was digging around in an old box of ANACS and PCI coins this afternoon and discovered a couple semi-treasures I did not realize that I had including the one pictured: An ANACS 1934-D DDO Large ( Filled ) D Variety in AU-55 which just recently began appearing in the Red Book as an established variety ( the large filled D being the tougher sub-variety as there is the slightly more common DDO with a smalle

When Cash Is Tight

There is always room for a trade Friends, I noticed in a earlier post from Yankeejose that he was building a raw Morgan set. Since I have around 20 raw I sent some pics of the ones he was interested in. He chose one a 1898-S and did a trade of two NGC graded MS66 pennies for the Morgan. As I am helping TPETERS with his penny set one will go to him and the other will go in my set. Here is a pick of Todd's new addition; 1936 MS66rd To see old comments for this Journal entry, click h

I have attached a pre-photo of the obverses showing how mucked up they are. (notice the black rim area's and also in the field on one and overall haze on both) When they return, will post again with before and after pics for all to see. Collector Exhbits at Upcoming 2012 ANA Convention in Philadelphia

Always a first time to enter ... deadline for entry is July 6th http://www.worldsfairofmoney.com/collector-exhibits I'm pondering the idea of creating an entry for the collector exhibit at the upcoming 2012 ANA Convention. Anyone with lessons learned or tips? I previously participated in stamps exhibits and have been somewhat successful.... It will be interesting to see the exhibit entries at the upcoming Philadelphia ANA convention in August To see old comments for this Journal en

I promised a pic today--SILVER EAGLE

Not what was expected though. Friends, I did say yesterday I would show the liberty gold. As things are working out today I decided to do a pic for the Silver Eagle fans in the club. I purchased a 1995 MS Silver Eagle for my daughter around 10 years ago. I think it was around $12 or so. She still has it in the case it was purchased in and it is starting to look pretty nice towards a full patina spread gold tone. I decided on the reverse pic of the coin as it has a better spread on the t

Are Precious Metals Values Being Manipulated?

3 recent whistleblowers have come out from Wall Street As I continue to see the gradual slide of gold and silver values from what were highs of $2000+ for gold and $50 for silver ( recently-not just 1979), I get filled with mixed thoughts. First is the feeling of anger that the precious metals I have stowed away have been intentionally manipulated out of their value. We all know that Wall Street is a bunch of crooks but when the occasional whistblower comes out--like Greg Smith from Goldman

A Father's Day to Remember

one for the books! Howdy Friends, This past father's day weekend was one for the books! My son, grandson and my brother and I were in San Francisco and attended the SAturday and Sunday rounds at the US OPEN. We stationed ourselves at the top of the 18th grandstand for Saturday and on the 7th & 8th greens just off the 9th tee box for Sundays round. Having my boys with me at The Open on Father's Day was everything I hoped it would be. Leading up to the trip I had considered looking for a

It Never Hurts to Look

You might find a hidden treasure. Folks, Found a lovely little XF Roosevelt Dim, 1964-D, in change today at Dave's Snack Bar where i work. 1817 Bust 50c Possible thinking here is that I can not figure the words out from the previous piece due to the possibility it is a fake and was made on a foreign coin. Still the weight is perfect Later--- To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

1817 Bust Half Dollar

O-K Folks here is my latest puzzle Friends, I went to the Gold store to pick up a few gold pieces. I grabbed 2-XF $5 pieces = 1894 and 1900. I also got a XF $10 piece from 1882. Then I was handed a mystery. I will show you very soon a 1817 Bust half. This coin had something on it previous to minting. Check over top of the date and you will find the raised letters from a past coin running from under one side of the bust to under the other side. I have tried every angle but still can't read i

Carson City Silver

The recent NumisMedia Market Report on the Carson City Mint brought back memories of my very first Carson City coin, an 1878 CC Silver Dollar that I found in circulation during the summer of 1962. http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?NewsletterNewsArticleID=1697 When I was in high school during the early 1960's, I worked in a factory over the summer break. Every week, when I cashed my pay check, I would ask the bank teller for a roll of Silver Dollars. When I got home, I would look fo

1773 Louis XV Jeton

Tiny horses, but they are there! Every now and again I come across a piece that has horses on it, but they are very small. If I like the piece enough, I will still pull the trigger. My newest addition is just such a piece. I first saw this jeton at auction a while back from Heritage. At the time, I had two other coins on layaway, and so I wasn't able to pull the trigger in the auction. I kicked myself for not bidding on it, and I thought I might never see another with such great toning a

The Reverse of the 1986 $10 Gold Eagle

I couldn't resist showing the perfect reverse of this piece. Friends, As usual every obverse has the reverse pic showing up sooner or later. So here is a large pic of the reverse gold eagle for those of you that have not seen the artful piece yet. Later---Rick To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. coin shopping :)

Not for myself but for another collector. Friends, I had a couple morgans that were raw and offered them to yankeejose. He will be getting the one I did pics journal on yesterday. I took the time today and visited my friend that owns a silver and gold store. I checked out the morgans he had that were raw and below AU condition. Got a handful of Carson Cities--1878,1890,1891 to send pics to Yankee and see if he is interested in them. As I was there for around 4 hours we talked about everythi

1960D Small Date Lincoln Memorial 106th Anniversary ANA NYC 1997

An Interesting find for $15.00 Hi everyone. I was scanning Ebay the past week as well as many other sites looking to add to my Lincoln Memorial Business Strike collection when I saw this nice 1960D Small Date Lincoln Memorial in an interesting holder from the ANA 106th anniversary in NYC and with no one else bidding I decided to pull the trigger. I received the coin in the mail today and I have to say that it is a very nice specimen. The little bit of scuffing at the 11 o clock position is o

Looking For Recommendations

So I can continue to grow the numismatic garden. Hi All, Wondering if any of you are particularly fond of a national dealership that would be able to help me finish (sort of) my 1st Generation commemorative half and Peace Dollar sets over the next few years. I kind of think the commemoratives will fizzle out at about 80%, currently at 62%) but the Peace Dollar set is an easy completion. Oh, gotta get that pesky 1943/2 Jefferson someday also (but that is a low priority). Please send me

During World War ll he served in the U.S. Army in the Southwest Pacific where he participated in the New Guinea, Luzon, and Southern Philippine campaigns. Nice find on a dusty consignment shop shelf

I found an airtight sealed GSA soft pack 1887 O Morgan. I have to take it out of the air-tight packet BEFORE I send to NGC, correct? Ok, I really already know the answer to that question. I visited my favorite consignment shop last friday to pass some time looking over some of the Mint and Proof sets that are abondante, at a great price. While there I noticed a blue envelope with the words--United States Silver Dollar--thinking it was an Eisenhower coin, I passed on it and continued my coi
