NGC Journals

A Big Hand for NGC!!

The 'collector friendly' Registry takes another step in the right direction! This journal entry is probably not going to be overly popular with all the 'purists' out there but here goes. After reading the excellent post offered by gherrmann44 and a considerable amount of thought on my part (boy did that hurt!), I'm enthusiastically climbing on board. For all the reasons stated in the aforementioned post and the fact that if someone doesn't agree they don't have to participate, I think it's a

Massive Coin Hoard

not mine, but I get to catalog it.. Yes it is true..I am lucky enough to be the first person to go through this stash/hoard in around 20 years. If I may, a little background first...... One of my fishing buddies K*** is independently wealthy, I've never asked what he did for a living or where it came from, but he is nearing 50 and has been "retired" for as long as I've known him. One of our long-time friends is B**, an older gentleman who used to teach sailing classes and navigation using as

The Coin of the Month for August

And the coin of the month for August is... an 1800 Draped Bust dollar. This is a Bolander-5, BB-189 variety, considered to be R-4. It is graded VF-25 by PCGS. It has deep gray peripheries with lighter gray centers and violet/gold overlay. Some flashes of luster are seen in the protected areas on both sides.

Bodybagged by NGC but PGCS said AU55

Is grading becoming too subjective? A few months back, I cracked a 1909-D Gold Indian Head graded MS61 by NGC out of its havily scuffed and scratched holder to make up a 5 coin minimum submission. This coin came back from NGC in bodybag. The same company who previously graded the coin MS61 said the coin was "improperly cleaned". Last month, I sent the coin to PCGS for a free grading (their quarterly members special) and it came back AU55. Makes me wonder really how one grader sees it as "i

New Orleans Mint Must Have Had Trouble With Fitting the O on the Quarter Eagle

Look at the image and you'll see what I mean! Notice how the "O" is partly obscured on the 1856 O by the tailfeathers of the arrows in the eagles claw? And also the reverse is true for the 1852 O quarter eagle. The "O" on this coin obscurses the aroows tail feathers. I guess there isn't much room there for the mint mark on the quarter eagle. Check out the image in my 1856 Mint Set to see a larger image of the 1856-O Quarter Eagle's mint mark.

People new to our hobby and others need to know! Greetings Collectors, It has been over a month since I have posted anything and while I am sure there are some who wished I had waited longer to open my mouth, for whatever it's worth, I'm back. As of late I have been doing my best to not take part in this economic downturn. In fact I have been trying to support as many industries as possible. While my work continues to be steady I have picked up an additional hobby to help suck every avail

Caesar's State Set

Caesar Speaks!! Here's the story.......... Of some Statehood Quarters............... This is the story of my Chow-Chow Caesar's state set. It all began on a dark and stormy March 4, 2009, with the purchase of a 2005 Silver state set. The first clad purchase was on March 7, 2009 with an Arkansas quarter. As the days went by, I bid on E-bay on other quarters I needed. Man, what a blast! I had so much fun, I didn't know how to act!!! I won some, lost more, and slowly put this set toget

Re: "Plate" coin

It's a coin with a Photographic Pedigree The term "plate" refers to the fact that the coin was photographed and used as an example in a coin publication. For example: Redbook Plate, Breen Plate etc. Simply refers to the fact that the particular coin was the best example the author could find to illustrate their description. MPD is Miss Placed Date. Information is from various online sources. Hope this helps

What is a "Plate" coin?

Saw several coins for sale at Teletrade.... Hi Everyone, Noticed a new thing and wanted to ask if any one knows what this means. The term "Plate" is used on several auctions at Teletrade, where the holder says "Small Cent 1903 Plate ANACS 63 RB MPD-006"..... The word Plate follows the MPD number, maybe it has something to do with that!? Please post an answer and we can all learn something new?

DETAILS GRADING FOR ME?

I want the Sham-wow guy to do this one! Hello all! OK......I have the third known 1933 Saint-Gaudens $20 piece. It is BU and never been touched by human hands. The trouble is that it was on a shelf in the musty old warehouse for the last 76 years, and it has some really nasty, black and green spots all over it. I want it graded, so off to NCS and we'll wait. Oooops.....it's got the dreaded ED. NGC won't grade a coin with ED. OK.....let's settle for "details grading". What do I get

Rethinking the detail grading issue

After sleeping on it and reading other opinions on the issue of NGC detail grading, I can see the bigger picture. Thank you Society members for chiming in on the issue of details grading. After reading up on the issue and sleeping on it, I am thinking clearer on the subject. Our coins are national treasures and an important part of our nation?s history. As hobbyists, whether we realize it or not, we are entrusted with continuing a legacy for future generations by ensuring our coins are pres

RE: I'M NOT A ROCKET SCIENTIST

Just my thinking (right or wrong) Friends, I do think it is a great thing that NGC is encapsulating our problem coins. I have 14 PCGS genuines. We pay for a service and all coins should get encapsulated for preservation. The new slabs for these coins looks great. The only part of this I don't agree on is the 50% points. I watch the auctions looking for a replacements for my 1890CC,1892CC & 1893CC genuines and I see a lot of ANACS & ICG details coins, and yes now PCGS genuines are at t

Detail Grading - Thanks NGC!

I am all for it. The only draw back I see to this is that NGC will be getting more money out of us for grading our previously body-bagged coins. But that's OK because I get something worthwhile out of it as well. I havent' submitted a whole lot to NGC but I have received several body-bagged coins in return from what I have submitted. Most of these coins were nothing overly special (just some of my first IHCs I'd purchased mainly). However, there was one coin (1913 $10 Indian Eagle) that m

quality control faulty blind graders Scratched nicked and cleaned coins gradedWell I guess I have heard everything now, members are now complaining the their coins are being graded to high. To me it is just more proof that modern coins are not worth owning. When you get 2009 proof coins that are marked up it reflects on the US mint quality. For example one of my 2009 proof lincoln cents was so ugly it had a finger print and some kind of smear on it. This is the second year in a row I have had

NGC's NEW DETAILS HOLDER

I BELEIVE SOME PEOPLE ARE MISREADING THE IDEA BEHIND THIS NEW HOLDER- IT'S A BLESSING THEY ARE DOING THIS FOR US! FIND THE GOOD IN THE SITUATION, INSTEAD OF SEEKING OUT THE BAD, LIFE IS JUST EASIER THIS WAY, LESS STRESS EQAULS LONGER LIFE!! FIRST OFF. THEY ARE NOT ASSIGNING A NUMERIC GRADE TO PROBLEM COINS, THEY ARE ADDING A DETAILS GRADE: FOR EXAMPLE IF THE COIN WOULD GRADE AN XF40 IF THERE WASN'T ANY SURFACE ISSUES, THEY ARE CALLING IT AN XF ONLY, NO NUMERIC GRADE OF 45! Coming changes at NGC

September 1, 2009 brings details grading to NGC September 1, 2009 NGC, will details grade all problem coins and allow 50% points in the registry. This news comes to me with mixed emotions. If my registry goal is to compete, then having problem coins in my set is not for me. However, if my goal is to complete my set, the picture changes dramatically for me. Now for the first time, all the expensive problem gold coins I own in ANACS holders will cross into NGC registry sets. For instance, I h

I"M NOT A ROCKET SCIENTIST

NGC is going to grade cleaned, scrathced, and rim nicked coins? GRADE but DETAILS? so I read in a journalFriends; I don't know for sure but this would be the downfall for NGC as far as I am concerned. You don't put a grade on a coin that is not lusted for. I surely don't want a MS-65 with a rim nick in my set,HELLO what are they thinking about. So you say my 1893cc altered surface will now get a MS64 and will give me over 1,500 points in my values. GOOD BYE NGC. Times have been tough but you c

RE is now the time

unfortunatly it is The way things are going for may collectors in todays economy people have to sell thier collections. Well if you are one of the people that have not been affected then its time to buy. But if you are looking to invest in coins then thier is a time proven way of doing this and that is to invest in the U.S. major key date coins. I have read many articals and books over the fourty years of collecting and the best is your key dates these have over the years have proven to be yo

Please release Me, Let Me Go

Remove your coin/coins from your registry How often have you bought a new coin that you were very excited to add to your registry set only to find out that the coin is still registered or ownership of that coin still belongs to someone else? Then you get the dreaded message that it will take up to a week unless the previous owner relinquishes the coin. If you sell or cosign your coin for sale, please take the time to do so. In the mean time I will be singing Please Release Me, Let Me Goooo.

is now the time?

when is a good time to buy the best.... I have been around to watch the coin market to cycle up and down a couple of times. So my question is this, is now the time to buy key date coins? I think now is the time to buy these rarely seen coins! Some coins do not just appear week in and week out. So when you see a 1909-s VDB in an old green PCGS holder, you buy it. I am not saying you will not see another one, but see an older holder coin which is on the higher end of the grade and color given
