Can a dealer be cherrypicked?
The hunt refers to what we all try to do and that is to make truly stunning find such as a rare date or extremely rare variety or even maybe even better find a coin that rewrites the condition census for a variety. Very seldom is having a successful ?hunt? the result of shear dumb luck (yes it does happen) most often it is the result of building the appropriate library and study. Those of you, who like me, that have setup at coin shows to sell coins have had the
In the definition of numismatist not only does the word collector appear but so does one or both of the following terms, ?study? and/or ?student.? Did I go from collector to numismatist? You can decide, personally I would say maybe.
In the 1970?s I started attending coin shows. I met a dealer named Guy from Frederick, Maryland. I did a lot of business with him because he treated me well on trades. One day I came loaded for bear and dragged a small suit case loaded with items I was willing
What did it take to get a kid hooked on coin collecting in 1955?
In 1955 I was 11 years old and had already been collecting coins for a year or two. I was dutifully outfitted with my copy of the ?Red Book? and the standard blue booklets with the ?holes? you pushed the coins into. I had booklets for cents, nickels and dimes. My mom and I had a little ritual which took place on Saturday. I would get my coin booklets out and before she went shopping she would give me her change purse, and I c
Made another #1 set COMPLETE!
Good Evening,
Just thought that I would share in my joy and sorrow.
I finished my 2002 Complete Proof set #1 rank! I am glad to have it finished and add another #1 set to my registry. I have worked hard to attain this goal. Spent way too many hours surfing! It is nice to see the set done.
On the other hand it has now limited my options as to coins to pursue. I do not have the wide range of coins to look for. So I am finding myself losing focus(interest) a l
STILL LOOKING.
Hello, I am an avid and long time journal reader. I am well aware that this is not an auction forem, but, I am not allowed in the chat rooms because I use a free ISP (Yahoo). What kind of an insult is that? Anyway, I have been looking for a PCGS 1944 MS67FB for about 2 years. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Gilmore
How many journals have you entered lately?
Friends, It sure has been a slow summer. With little money (no vacation) and little work (stuck at the house) I read most of the journals entered this summer. The average of journals were around 1-2 per day but with fall around the corner it seems to be picking up a little.I have stopped grading coins until I figure out what NGC & PCGS is up to. It seems they are trying to change the way we think about our coins. I wish all the collectors going bac
Enough isn't enough......it's too much.
Hello all!
Well, the verdict is in. I cannot afford to send coins to be graded and have them either not graded as what they are, or body bagged.
My KM13-A 1d, now, does not exist. There is a Registry slot for it though. My uncirculated 1934(out of a roll) New Zealand threepence with a double die crack, is neither cracked, nor any good. It looked like a proof coin when I sent it to them(NCS)for evaluation. Nope....excessive hair lines. I guess that me
I had purchased 6 of them but now......
all of them have been sold or are all but sold (auctions end tomorrow night) and they have been VERY profitable. I will clear over $1400 net profit for the 6 coins.
They were:
NGC PF69UC 1/10 oz
NGC MS70 1/10 oz
PCGS MS70 FS 1 oz
PCGS MS69 1/2 oz
PCGS MS70 1/4 oz
PCGS MS70 FS 1/10
I bought the 1/4 and 1/2 oz coins from the Mint (I included the Mint box and COA for them and that increased the bids) and the others on eBay for reasonable mon

I have ordered a few Koalas and more Kookaburras. Perfect looking ones will be sent for grading soon ! hurray !
I WAS ABLE TO BORROW THE MONEY ON A SHORT TERM LOAN TO PAY OFF MY EVEN SHORTER TERM LOANS
WELL IT HAS BEEN THREE WEEKS SINCE I GOT MY DREAM CAR(NOT QUITE BUT CLOSE ENOUGH FOR NOW) A 1969 MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE.
I WAS SO AFRAID I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO SELL SOME OF MY PRIZED COINS TO FUND THIS VENTURE/INVESTMENT. BUT THANKS TO MY WONDERFUL SISTER-IN-LAW, WHO LOANED ME ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY BACK MY BROTHER AND MY EX-BOSS, WITH A FOUR MONTH LOAN. I HAVE TO PAY HER BACK $1000.00/MONTH BUT THAT SURE BEA
Elusive climb into the top 50 still within reach
Well, I've added 13 more Kennedy's to my set since my last journal. A 1973,83,86,87,88,91,94,95,(2)1996's,98,2000,and 2007.
Have to slow down somewhat on the acquisitions for the time being as both sons returned to their perspective universities for the new academic year. I am hoping to crack the top 50 with my Kennedy collection by year's end.
Side Note: A few sellers on FeeBay last week started asking ridiculous prices on Kennedy's, so
Finally joined Collectors Society
I finally joined today, paid the membership dues and am anxiously awaiting the package with my five free grading coupons. I'll be sending in two 1921-D Walking Liberty halves - the only remaining "No Coin" in my long set - and hoping for a "real" grade on both. One is a (my opinion) F-15 that I recently bought; the other is a (also my opinion) G-6 that I found in a dealer's "junk silver" box years ago for 4x face value. Haven't decided what to use the other
I actually added a registry coin !!
I'll keep this short..it's been a bit of a busy coin week for me. I sent away 8 of my Walkers for photoing by a friend who is very professional and skilled at coin photography. I have to laugh because although I have seen evidence of his talents by looking at some of his other work, he explained to me that he didn't have a lot of experience with this series.
What makes it funny is that even someone with his skill level, could still run into the same issues
And Probably A New Member "with a great future set"
Friends, I received a e-mail from someone today wanting a list of my morgans that I am selling. I sent it to him with my phone number. He called and I guess we talked quite a while.
My friend has been collecting his morgan dollars for around 5 years and has over 70 different coins (ungraded). I was in the same spot a year ago before my PCGS membership & my Coin Collectors membership. We talked about grading and I was surprised that he w
Ikes in high grade are a fun set to put together.
Hi all,
I am so close to breaking into the top 25 in the Ike series. I have just put in my two newest coins for the Ike series. I will have to wait till monday to see me move up in rank. They are both PCGS coins and so they are in pending.
I am one of the new collectors to the hobby. By new I mean since the 80s. I have alway loved the classic coins, but have never been able to collect them, without paying a pretty price for them. I will bu
Looking forward to a great holiday season...already!!
Greetings again!!
Well, fall is almost officially here. Soon I will see the familiar and longed for changing of colors in the mountains that surround the valley here. There will be a chill again, and the excitement of collecting will be re-newed.
I also just started my fall semester classes (humanities, poli-sci, and math) which counts me down to 3 more semesters until my degree. I am learning a lot of new ideas and other philosoph
First it is.......then it isn't.
Hello everyone!
Well it's another weekend at NCS and NGC for a few of my submissions.
It seems they are either scheduled for evaluation or scheduled for grading.
Last week one from NCS went to NGC, scheduled for grading. Later it was in quality control. This weekend it's back in "scheduled for grading" again? I guess the fresh ocean breezes will do wonders for them.
I never really worried much about these coins until they took over a week to get to NGC.
Finally!
I did it. I hit the BIN button and purchased my first Charlotte minted coin.
My $219 Gold 1/4 oz MS70 Buffalo sold for over $800 last night which was amazing to me. It is a nice coin and I included the orginal Mint packaging, but still. Nearly 4 times my purchase price. So that helped raise the cash nicely for the half eagle.
Here is a picture from the eBay ad. When it arrives, I'm sure I will post a better image.
Two more for completion
Thanks to another Sunday night auction I snagged 1945d Mercury Dime in MS67FB only 302 in that grade and only 10 graded finer. worth over 700 registry points. It is a real beauty not a spot pure white, very nice as good as any MS67FB that I have. I have only two left to get with a possible two more to upgrade. Then I will start working in ernest on my Indian head pennies. The merc's have been just as much fun to build as my beloved Peace Dollars set, which by the are wa
update on the registry cert. problem.
If you read my previous Journal I suggested a way to check a coin cert. number. I did not think of the effect of having a person who has that coin listed and how NGC might remove it from the real owners list. To avoid confusion in the future do not add and remove coins from your sets unless you have the coin in hand!
Enjoy your collecting and thanks to all the people who offer there comments. I enjoy reading all of them and learning something everyday.
While watching an auction on ebay, checked the cert. number and found.... and how to fix this!
While watching an auction on ebay, checked the cert. number and found....Nothing?
When I see a coin auction on a nice coin from an unknown seller, what is one to do?
To help prevent the selling of fake coins, should all grading companies allow us to look up and verify?
THIS IS HOW TO GET AROUND THE PROBLEM!

It's been a while since I have done this, but I will tell you what I do. I
If you clicked the Adobe update in the forum, scan your computer
A few of us noticed mysterious Adobe updates on some forum posts, from a particular user (who must be infected)
Some antivirus scanners already detect the suspect file. If you were affected or you aren't 100% sure your machine is clean, I urge you to take action and run a Microsoft OneCare protection scan.
