IT'S 5:30!!!

I guess someone slammed the door too hard on the rush out? Guess who? Here's the topper: Your previous action has generated an error. An email has been sent to the webmaster. I guess I'm going to lose points with the webmaster too? Adios amigos

IT DIDN'T MAKE IT TO THE WEEKEND!

I hate to say "I told you so"............but Hi Everyone! A short note this time. In my post about imaging, I entered the lines directly from the NGC page with both coins numbered and labeled. I stated it wouldn't last long. It didn't. It is now a plain 1945, as predicted. "It's too tough to grade" is NGC's retort. If we can't grade it, we eliminate it. They've seen two of these KM13-A coins so far, and still no one has seen a difference? I have done MY homework. The first is now f

Dateless mule ! no.. not the 20p

I am surprised noone noticed the error, least of all me The image of the 2010 Koala in my last entry was wrong ! The correct obverse uses a new font and has 2010 on it. The coin would be slightly problematic with no date ! I noticed because Downies used the wrong obverse again in another image ! this time the ANA kooka set.. a 2010/2008 mule ? now that would be funny http://www.downies.com/images/product/aq385.jpg Wrong obverse, both obverses should be the same THAT is the Koala 201

IMAGING DAY

Here's what they look like? Hi everyone! A few slabs(appropriately named)came back today. I imaged the QEII, New Zealand pennies, and they are looking quite good. The 1945 NZ George VI looks good, even though it lost the"British flan", KM-13A, pedigree. They must have hit delete on that line of the label. It's now in a slot though. I won't argue the grade. My "backup" coin is there now. LineItem Year Mint Mark Variety/Pedigree Denom. NCS Grade NCS Comments NGC Invoice Number NGC Grade NG

'Home, Home on the Range,.......'

Sorry, I can't carry a tune in a bucket. I must have thought I was in the shower. There are some real bargains out there. Prices seem to have dropped as more people are feeling the pain of Obamaeconomics. I know that some of you are still blaming Bush for our current troubles but sooner or later Obama will have to take credit for the 'stimulus' plan of rewarding his voters (labor unions, socialists, etc.) to the tune of a couple of trillion $s. The good news is I feel so 'stimulated' by al

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES

In by 9:00, out by 5:00 Hello everyone! At a little after 09:00 this morning, NCS sent my NZ 1d KM-13A and "broken wing" 6d to NGC for grading. They were received by NGC, and labeled as what they were. Around 17:00(5:00PM), my second "British flan",(KM-13A)disappeared. GONE!!! It is now just another plain old "run of the mill" 1945 penny. As one can see a "broken wing" variety, it may get graded as such. My 1934 NZ, 3d, uncirculated(out of a roll), double die crack, was body bagged. Ex

Adding a few new coins

On the move again! Good Afternoon Community, Well, I just renewed my membership for another year! I went to add a coin this am and was shocked to find out that I had been downgraded! I never received any notification advising me that my membership was about to expire. I suppose it is my fault I did not mark it on my calendar, but last year they sent me a letter about 2-3 weeks before it was to expire so I paid my dues. But that is now history! I have almost completed all my proof sets f

The Coin of the Month for September

And the coin of the month for September is... a 1892 Barber dime. This coin is graded by PCGS as MS-66. It has nice red and green pill away toning on the obverse with greenish gold on the reverse. The luster on the obverse is very nice, while the luster on the reverse is outstanding (more like a 67). This coin cane with a CAC sticker.

Holmes Sale Video Clip

For you copper junkies I just thought I'd pass this along for anyone who is interested. It's a video on YouTube of the Goldbergs' auction call for the sale of Dan Holmes' 1795 S-79 reeded edge cent, which became the first copper coin to sell for over $1 million. This was Sunday afternoon. They say that applause at an auction means that someone paid too much... Here's a link to the lot description: http://www.mkjassociates.com/cgi-bin/ilgvulot.pl?site=1&sale=54&lot=128 (Afte

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS?

I should have volumes to say...........but Hi folks, I have five coins in F/I/S(almost 2 weeks), and no imaging. They received nice grades, but I would like to see what they look like. Is anyone else seeing a delay in their coins being imaged? I was hoping to have them this week, but I have others, and I bet they are waiting for them to be graded before shipping the lot. I guess it makes economic sense. I have 2 at NCS being evaluated. Both are world coin varieties, and who knows what

Learning to Play the Game!

Huge difference between cleaning and conserving. To me 'cleaning' is when someone tries to make a coin look better by indiscriminate dipping, brushing, etc. with the sole purpose of changing the surface of the coin at the expense of its luster. 'Conserving', on the other hand, is a professional removing debris without damaging the surface of the coin. Conservation should not improve the grade of the coin but, may in fact, change the appearance and therefore, the value of the coin. Latest

Dan Holmes Early Date Large Cents

The most complete variety set sold in LA! The Dan Holmes collection of large cents is being sold by the Goldbergs. The Early Dates were sold Sunday (9/6/09), starting at 1PM LA time, and going well into the evening. (One thing I think I mentioned in my 'coverage' of the Naftzger Middle Dates earlier this year is that the Goldbergs' auctions move slowly - barely better than a lot per minute.) Unfortunately, I was not able to attend this sale in person, but did follow it live on-line. This co

Recent Cross-Over Results

The results of an NTC experiment and ANACS & ICG cross-overs. This past spring, in a journal post (?My worst Numismatic Nightmare? 3/21/09) I put forth a plan for an experiment to cross over the coins in my collection certified by NTC (Numistrust Corp). In this experiment, I would submit half the coins in their holders and the other half cracked out of their holders. Now I can report with some finality the results of that experiment and show a clear trend. I suspected that many

COINS &&&CARS￿

THINKING of TRADING Friends and Members,Lately I have not really done much with my set. Being laid off this summer I spent a lot of time with my son.He is not crazy about the coins but loves the 60's cars & trucks. I recently put a add in Craigslist "trade morgans for nice 50's or 60's car or truck" We have received a few offers with 1 real nice 1969 chevy but waiting for the one that drops our chin. It seems that when I want to do something with my son he's off somewhere and I think h

A Journey Ends Here

Now What? I have been looking for an 1884-CC MS67 in the original GSA holder for about four years. Several have become available during that time, but I was always a day late or a dollar short. My quest recently ended with the purchase shown below. It is probably the last upgrade to my set I will make. Any upgrades from here are substantially more expensive, and I cannot justify the cost in my own mind. It is thrilling to get that last coin I have been looking for, but at the same t

Dogs vs Coins response

response to smcnumismatics Most everyone here knows I do not send in coins to be graded any longer and I'll bet you do not send in many coins to be graded either, looking at the level of coins you display in your sets. Why would you believe I am looking for someone to submit coins for me ?? My journal was a surmation based on experience with dogs. I was suggesting that many of the ones who feel they have wasted their time and money submitting coins to just take one coin that they thought w

Won the auction but did not get the coin!

Won the auction, paid for it and the next day was told the seller canceled the auction!? This is just another example of the weirdness that is out in the online auction world! Yes I won an online auction the other day, paid for it and then the next day the seller sent an email and canceled it out from under me! I have never had this happen to me before and am upset that it is allowed at all! Ebay has rules about the binding contract you enter into and all, but this is just silly! One reaso

Dogs Vs Coins my 2 cents

Well everyone has an opinion and it may well be that way that major dealers get preferential treatment with their submissions....of course that is not what i have experienced In reply to Moondoggys journal regarding the similarity of dog judging and coin grading i have to say i have not experienced what he is talking about. I dont consider myself a "big player" in the coin business, i have prob only submitted to NGC roughly 3 times under my own name this year, and then only a handful of coin

Dogs vs. Coins

Is judging one the same as the other I have been reading multiple journals lately where some collectors are becoming disillusioned with the grading process. My wife and I show dogs in AKC competition rings and naturally there is a judge to decide or "pick" the winner. We have been showing dogs for a few years now and when we started we defined the term "novice". But through MANY entries into MANY shows we finally passed the learning curve phase and started to become successful. Now mind y

Working, Collecting,and worring

I've been away for awhile! Hi guys, and gals. I've been very occupied these days. Too occupied to write most anything. On my collecting front, I've kept myself, enjoyably, working quietly on my sets. Mostly still in the PL area. It's hard staying at the number 1 spot with my Pl dimes and quarters. Always looking for who is catching up to me, searching for a better coin. Although, there are not many choices, when you pretty much have all the top coins. Still, when someone is catching up, and yo

For What It's Worth

Not Buffalo Springfield's 1967 Song Yes, this is a protest. There's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear. Recently one of the society members wrote a journal about bidding on coin lots on some internet auction sites that just up and disappear. Well, this just recently happened to me and i am going to name names. About a week ago I participated in TeleTrades coin auction for that night. Now, in the last month and a half I have spent about $5000 on their auction site upg
