A DEALER'S LIFE

It must be nice. Hello everyone! I just got through looking at a submission by a dealer. I'm glad to see that 50% of his coins were rejected for the rubber stamp issues. Some of those graded are bad. If I had a hint of green, I'd get the "ED" label. I wonder how many he submitted as a UNC were graded as AU? Shoot, he had to pay for something. I guess the don't have to pay for anything ungradable. If they send in 100 coins, you know they'll get some percentage good grades. They don't pay for

I Forgot the Coin

"You must enter a Teaser." Whitman launched a new coin expo in Philadelphia. The show is probably winding down as I type. I drove up from Baltimore with my wife on Friday to see some of the sights and check out the show. We parked at 5th & Arch, next to Ben Franklin's grave site and across Arch from the Mint. We started with the Mint. The last time I was there was in the 1970s, when a large collection - the Eliasberg collection if I remember correctly - was on display in the lobby. Af

Happiness Is A Round Coin

Never been happier!! Greetings everyone!! It has been too long since I have made a post since my time has been consumed with work and school. I am enjoying pursuing my higher education and have been learning a lot of critical thinking skills that has furthered my mind in my personal goals. Yesterday I revisited my coin collection and I am very happy with my progress of my SAE collection. I am quite disappointed on the decision by the MInt not to distribute any W's or Proofs this year

Eating My Words

How other Society members help me to become a better collector and enjoy coin collecting all the more. In an April 4, 2009 post, I talked about the joys of building a signature set. Now six months later as my collecting interests are developing I am finding that I have to eat a few of my words from that post. It is not that I enjoy building signature sets any less, but it is more about expanding my horizons and discovering by experience the joys of collecting in other areas. Today I stand by

A Fun New Addition

A coin struck under the authority of a sovereign Indian tribe. I ran across a new coin for my signature set kind of randomly. It was a "Battle of Point Pleasant" commemorative issue made for the Shawnee Indian tribe with a mintage limited to 50,000. I hadn't realized that a couple of the sovereign Indian tribes within the United States had started to make these 1 Oz silver issues in the last decade (the Shawnee started in 2002, followed by another tribe in 2004). I may try to collect the rest

At Last- My Crown Jewel

Why rush- I have been collecting New Orleans gold coins for quite some time. The bulk are in the EF- 45 range for obvious reasons($$). Although my coins all have nice eye appeal, I have always wanted on special coin- very rare, in a higher grade, something special. I located an 1845 0 quarter eagle in an Au 50. It is beautiful. I did not have the funds ro purchase the coin, but I did have three really good saints from my early days of collecting. My interest is in New Orleans gold, so after

I GOT SOME BARNEY COINS!

If I were to sell them, I could buy eBay. Hello all! I have a 1945 NZ 1d Proof Penny. There were 10 minted. Someone broke it out of Daddy's collection and spent it. Sure there are a few nicks, like bag marks, but it still has all the original luster. It is now in a purple slab as a "polished" coin. I guess I have to send in my 1995 W Silver Eagle for regrade? I thought it was proof, but it's only polished. My whole Silver Eagle proof set would all come back as polished. Sorry Rick....I wi

ADDING PHOTOS- WOW!!

I received it three days before cut-off, and had to overnight it to get it there in time to receive the Early Releases designation. She turned out to be the coveted MS70 Early Releases. Thanks for looking!

CAC Submittal #2

And the results are back from CAC Submittal #2. This submittal was not as good as the first but not terrible either. This time 8 coins out of ten were stickered. I was surprised that the 2 didn't make it. The next submittal will be in a month or so. The picture is of one of the coins that were stickered.

PRIORITIES?

From coin collector to junk collector. Hello all! I guess the purple craze is catching on. Some of us figured it would be the easy way out on coins that deserve a grade. It looks like incompetence, or backlog, mandates a speedier way of getting coins on their way. I'd rather wait a month to get an honest grade. I didn't mind NGC's, 10-12 days for a grade. What I do mind is sending a proof coin to have an ugly fingerprint removed(done well), and having it come back as a "polished" coin. I

THIS IS A BIG JOB! I HAVE BEEN TAKING PICTURES AND UPLOADING THEM TO THE REGISTRY THIS WEEKEND! THIS IS A LOT OF WORK, AND DREAD DOING THE REST OF THEM! I HAVE GOTTEN ABOUT HALF OF MY SET DONE THIS WEEKEND. I HAVE A RELATIVELY SMALL SET, JUST A LITTLE OVER 200 COINS. I HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT I WILL BE UPDATING MY SET AS I RECEIVE THEM FROM NOW ON IN THE FUTURE! MY RIGHT ARM IS NUMB FROM CLICKING, I THINK I HAVE CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME FORM THIS()!! Coin Collecting: it's great for kids and adults.

It's amazing how much we all take for granted.... I was talking to a friend of mine last night. He has three kids. His two oldest, who are now in college, I got interested in coin collecting when they were little. They pursued it for a while, but now have moved on to other things as teenagers. The interesting thing about this situation is my friend's third child, who is learning disabled and has now taken an interest in coin collecting in a big way. At my suggestion, my friend bought him a c

I Just Don't Really Like "Colorized" Coins.

The more I think about this the more sure I become of it. There seems to be an ever-increasing number of colored or painted coins coming out of certain countries the last few years. At first I thought they were potentially neat but the more I've thought about it the more I've grown to dislike the basic concept. One of the things that always made me love coins (especially silver ones) is that they are metal and they are SHINY. Plastics and other materials will never hold the same sense of str

1000 hit milestone Still number 1....for now. I know its more important where you rank at beginning of the year. For now...I am thankful I least held that position for awhile. With that being said, I know I will have the best NGC graded presidents in the registry. Some still have made no effort to fill the slots with any NGC. I have said before....any slot filled with PCGS graded coins especially when there are NGC coins available. I have a different set with just FDI PCGS but after 200

Collecting small European gold coins!

My experience building a Netherlands 10 Gulden registry set. First, I wish to offer my thanks and kudos to NGC and Collector?s Society for introducing new registry sets featuring small European gold coins. Collecting small European gold coins can offer real value as the demand for these coins in contrast to their US counterparts is significantly lower. My interest in small European gold coins started when I added several examples of them to my ?Inspirational Ladies? signature set. Then early

A Surprising Find While Looking Around...

I decided to do some looking around on "the bay" and found something I didn't expect... For one reason or another it just makes me chuckle to call eBay, "the bay." I come from a town with "Bay" in the name and we call it "Home of the Dirty Bay" (don't swim in it, don't drink from it, and don't eat anything you caught in it). But anyway... I had decided to look around and see if there might be something in a nice price range that I might be able to add to my signature set. I still hadn't purc

cleaned out my "impulse buys" At least once a year I try and take the time to go through my various cubbies, drawers, safe and SDB and pull out all of my impulse buys. It is amazing how many random coins I acquire each year that don't even come close to fitting into any of the sets that I am "actively building." Not just my impulse buys but also doubles from coins in my real sets that I've upgraded, coins I purchased to help a friend out, ones I've been holding until bullion values rose etc.

SOME NICE EMAIL

I follow Dilbert and coffee? Hi all, You guys are too nice. I am truly flattered. I am impressed that I am becoming a household tradition. Coffee,Dilbert, and NGC journals. I guess I have to compete with Dilbert? I really do appreciate all of you sending mail. A few have voiced concern about some matters. Everything will work out. To those asking about the changed label, I added the best image I can post in a journal. The coin that's on the label is strangely outside the slab. For t
