NGC Journals

A Registry Milestone For Everyone

collections are soaring A recent posting by NGC got me surfing through some of the dark recesses of this site. The comment I read was about the new record number of registry participants this year. Maybe the economic recession is not as bad as thought?..or maybe investors see the track record of coins as a long-term investment and have looked for other options besides stocks to invest in?..or maybe there are just more people discovering just how much fun and satisfaction there is in collecting

Loooking for F.C.C Boyds Pattern collection inventory - FREE MORGAN DOLLAR!!!!

Trying to track a pedigree of a coin.....1 shiny raw BU Morgan to the first person who can help me!!!! With a poor economy and less buying/selling going on i have found a new way to amuse myself and possibly add some value to some of the coins i own. How may you ask? By trying to trace the pedigree on some of the coins in my collection. As you all know pedigree's can add soem value to a coin especially so if you can trace it to a well known cabinet such as Eliasberg or Bass. While trac

Care to guess the grade? I recently bought a 1810 Classic Large Cent raw and sent it to NGC to certify. It has a pleasant chestnut color and very nice hair details. These early large cents were plagued with "spoiled planchets" and very difficult to find without having major problems. Take a grading test and give me your opinion on it's grade. If you want to check your grade against NGC's you can go to Dean's Large Cent Collection and pull it up. Have a great day.

"What a Summer & then some"...

I've been very busy but still very much "addicted" to my coins! Greetings Collectors, Early August was my last post so there is much to share with you all. I have tried to keep up with all of your journals and I am very happy to see the "passion" still remains with all of you. My last two months have had issues not related to Numismatics that have consumed much of my time. Foremost a very dear friend of our family lost his battle with COPD at age 87. He was like a second father to me and iss

NGC graded details

Wondering how this works. As of recently I have been pretty broke, well as far as extra money for collecting goes. I started collecting peace dollars a few months ago but had to stop due to lack of funds. So recently I developed a plan to lower my price range and go for what I can afford. At any rate, I ran across a coin that caught my eye; however its that new NGC graded "details." I guess NGC started slabbing problem coins, which I have no problem with. I was wondering though, can I add a

A 100% POSITIVELY COMPLETE SET

It came sooner than I expected. Hi everyone! I was just emailing back and forth, about trying to complete a set, and moving on. Another member and I were wondering where the end was. Well.............. I received my grades from the latest submission, and it's great news. I have the missing slots filled. Numbers are pending still, but they are there. I will do the imaging as soon as they arrive. It's my NZ 3d (three pence) set. It can use some improvements, but it's finally finished. I h

2000 SAE Arrives today

Update on SAE and Kennedy's Well, the 2000 SAE I purchased arrived today. It was nice, I have to admit, filling that empty slot. Now it looks like to do anymore would be to just upgrade what I could and I'm in no hurry to do that as I am trying to finish out my Kennedy collection before years end. Oh and of course the 95W which shall remain elusive to me. Word on the street is the 2009 SAE Proofs will not be made. The mint ran short on their silver supply. (Hey, it's a gov't operation, wo

ON A MORE POSITIVE NOTE!

There is always a solution. Hello everyone! I got a few emails about negativity. Me? I want to set the record straight. I deal with facts as they are presented to me. Period. I call them as I see them. Here's the latest: Thanks to Dena, and maybe a few others, who took the time to see there was a "glitch" in the program. The annoying "fly in the ointment," so to speak. People should be recognized for what the do and get done. Too many get praise for what they say they can do. Dena

Conversations about coins and metal

I'm finally getting to post this... It has been a really crazy week. Every time I tried to post something happened. I've had to deal with taking the GRE (Verbal:610; Quantitative: 790; WHOOP!), getting test scores back (100 FTW!), meeting due-dates for assignments, purging computer viruses, tolerating stupid roommates, and now getting sick... stupid roommate, getting sick and giving it to me. Got Some Great Copper!!

and it's has been quite some time! Hello everybody...It has been awhile since I have posted here but I am still coming by to read the journals and chat boards. I think my last post was in June and that also was the last time I purchased a coin! But I did make a purchase of some copper and brass a couple weeks ago. It wasn't a coin but an antique copper and brass chemical fire extingusher. I found this in an antique store in Virginia City when the family went to check out the camel races. I h

RETALIATION?

My details graded coins are still "scheduled for grading?" Hello everyone, I guess I will never get them done. They are already temporarily entered into slots, but big deal. If I try to sell then, no one can check the numbers in the Registry. I guess when you have a valid dispute, it is countered like this. I bet they get cleared before subscription renewal. I see the minute the KM-13A disappeared, everyone wants to have a set. Howard Mitchell says, all it takes is common sense to see t

New coin

2010 Tiger Hey Group, Just wanted to share that I picked up a new coin today. I broke down and bought the $30 AUS Tiger coin. (for those of you unknowing what this coin is it is a Kilo of silver 2.2 Lbs.) I have seen pictures of them but now I own one! I will not get any more but I was presented with such a deal I could not pass it up. I have many other coins that I need to fill my current sets, but I got this coin NGC MS70 and paid very little over silver price. I think it will be scored at

Re-evaluating......AGAIN!

Crow tastes a lot better if you use enough spices. I hate to admit it but some of you who replied to my earlier journal entries about quality over quantity were right. Trying to fill a set with 'expensive' (point values over 1,000) coins is a sure way to the poorhouse. I really am driven to just complete one of my sets, any one! To this end I have decided to fill sets with what I can afford and hopefully, upgrade at a future date. History bears out my basic tenet though; a few well chosen

Times Are Starting To Look A Little Better In My World

I put my lower grade Morgans up for sale. Friends, The year has been a rough one for us and I hope everyone is starting to feel the relief that I am finally comforted with. I checked out Heritage auction for next month, a lot of sweet coins are now out there for our sets. I went broke on the list that I wanted and then I threw it in the trash. I have been working regular this month so everything seems pretty good for now, a nice contract would put a boost in my collection, or a sale of the

Unseached Silver Quarter and Half "Hoard" and 2 Gold Coins

Well, I'm really not sure how much there is, but it will be mine! My father had a family Pharmacy when I was a kid. After 1964, he would always pull out any silver coins from the till and bring them home. I don't know what is left (my father died in 1982 and my mother has had possession of the coins since). I do expect rolls of quarters and halfs. And 2 Gold Coins- I haven't seen the gold coins since the early 1970's, so I have no clue (memory) as to what they are. I think they are double eagl

Right Coin--Wrong Time

bad timing It never ceases to happen to me. When I have some money saved in my coin budget there just don't seem to be any "really special" coins available for the sets that I focus on. Being a bit of a coin addict, it is hard for me to be patient and wait with that extra money sitting in the coin account. Even as a kid if I had $10 from cutting a neighbor's lawn or shoveling some snow that money was just dying to be spent. I'd like to say that I saved up those funds for coins to fill holes in

Commemorative Coins, Issue 2

British Catching Up on Commemoratives I thought my first article pretty much covered my views on this subject, but it's getting pretty comical. I have come to realize it is more serious than simply the significance of events and anniversaries being lost in the morass of commemorative issues. Our hobby of numismatics is being debased. I don't know what it is about the British. They issued very few commemorative coins until Elizabeth II's reign. She issued three commemorative crowns in pre

Off the Podium

What's with the obscured sets? I just logged on to check out the latest journals and noticed that my three large cent sets (middle dates, late dates, & all) have all dropped from #3 to #4. No one had been close behind. The newcomer ahead of me is now #1 in two of those three categories. That's fine by me, as I never had any hope of being #1 in any of them. Even though there is a part of me that feels the competitive drive, I just don't have the time or money. What bothers me is that th

I'm a new member and want to know which coins I should send in to be graded I have a complete MS and PF set of state quarters, MS sets in OGP covering 73-81 and 99-09, silver pf set for 09. I also have a 2000 $5 gold eagle in OGP it doesn't have a mint mark but is in a holder never been opened. I want to get the best "bang for my buck" in grading fees, and utilize the 5 free to the best I can. Any help is appreciated.

Closing in with my Kennedy's and a new SAE

Slots starting to fill up on my Kennedy's. Acquired a couple of hard to find ones. Well, I have added another 6 Kennedy's to my collection this month and hopefully before the end of the month another 2 or 3. My goal is to still crack the Top 50 for this collection before years end and with a little luck and some hard earned dough it will happen. Am deciding what to make my next crack at in regards to the Kennedy's. Finishing filling in the recent years or trying to get the best I can on th

Commemorative Coins

Commercialization of Commemorative Coins Commemorative coins have a particular attraction in that they are generally more aesthetic and unique than coins for circulation. Commemoratives are minted to celebrate an event or an anniversary, while general coinage continues with the same images before, during and after any event. This offers a great opportunity for amplifying the significance of events that should be recognized, enhanced and promoted. When a commemorative coin gets into circulat

My Raw Coins

Wonder if I'll ever see such deals again... Greetings! I was looking through my coin drawer today and it brought back some great memories of the days(just 2 years ago) when I was finding excellent deals on some raw coins. I bougt 5 raw saes for a little less than 35 dollars back then and had one graded, which came back a MS 69. I still have 4 to send in which I most likely will do in Decemeber. I also have a 1909 VDB (not an S) that begs me to grade as well. I am excited for Decem
