Prices Realized Have Been Decent on eBay

I am doing well despite the fees! I have been selling for a month now on eBay. Mostly graded bullion coins and some vintage silver bars. My results are surprisingly good. Right now I am showing a 25% profit after all fees, shipping etc are deducted. Of course it helps that I was buying when prices were much less than they are currently. While my goal is to buy that 1856-C Half Eagle "next", I have been snagging a couple Liberty Quarter Eagles along the way. All with the proceeds of my eBay

CAC Submittal

The results for my first CAC submittal are in. I recently applied and was approved by CAC as an advanced collector/submitter. I feel that for the coins I collect, which are mainly 19th century type coins, having the CAC sticker will be of benefit, when someday the coins are sold. At any rate, I sent in my first batch of coins and they were received at CAC on Monday. They sent an e-mail confirming receipt on Monday. I then received an e-mail on Thursday with the results and the return shippi

First Pictures with My New Camera

This coin came in today! As did the camera! Well, this camera is a bit different than the camera I broke, so I had to do some experimentation to get the pictures right. Below is the result of my adjustments! It is my latest purchase. 1854 Quarter Eagle XF45

Numismatic Dog Days of Summer

Gearing up for an exciting fall season! Late August, or the dog days of summer, signify an upcoming change of season. This time of year finds many of us preparing for another year of school. Some of us have kindergartners getting ready for their first year of school, whilst I have a son entering his senior year of college and a daughter finishing graduate school. Summer with its long days keeps most of us busy outdoors either working around the yard or partaking in some form of outdoor recreat

Update on NGC submission: 60% graded -15/25

60% in school used to be a D-! As a neophyte to submitting coins for grading, I'm still discouraged. I've taken all of these coins to reputable dealers prior to submitting them. Well, some of the low points have been having my 1894 Morgan silver dollar returned with "obverse damage" as the notation. I, nor my numismatically inclined friends can identiffy this obverse damage. This coin was encapsulated by another major grading service. I have an NGC coin with a scratch in a holder. Isn't that da

I AM DIVERSIFYING..............AGAIN

I am going to dump my shoebox out and submit the first coin I find! Hello all! I have 5 "modern" world coins at NCS for eval and/or conservation. I have more on the way too. I just remembered about an old shoe box I stashed away, and a beautiful "coin" I thought was junk. After realizing I know nothing about condition, I'll send in this "junker" and see. I have no idea what it is, but then again, I am not the expert. My NZ penny set is starting to take shape. Five nice Unc/BU reds

When The Going Gets Tough

the tough get going? Times are tough, no doubt, and with encouraging news about the economic turnaround like "Job Loss Rate is Slower this Month"..or "Banks Report Smaller Loss than Expected", it is no small wonder that I have read many posts about fellow collectors selling their collections or leaving the hobby... Chat boards are slower, less journals posted, fewer bids on items at the weekly auctions..... Well you may have noticed that I have been absent (mostly) for a few months. Part o

Upcoming Vacation/(Relief) Is In the Details (Grading)

It has been awhile.... Greetings and salutations everyone! It has been a little while since I have been able to post here due to my school and work obligations, but that does not mean I have been totally away as I have been checking in to read the latest news and journals, as well as to look at my collection status to determine which coins I will be acquiring next. But, I don't want to start my discussion about those things just yet at this point of my journal entry, instead I would lik

TODAYS AUCTION

Of course I went Friends, Well it was a good day. I set out this afternoon to meet a dealer concerning my set. After which I went to the auction. Made a couple friends before the auction hanging around out back talking about coins. When we all went in they registered but I didn't. It wasn't that the 1893s morgan dollar was bad,it had a good rim, rubbed but good visuals, and a couple black spots on reverse. A visit to the coin doctor "NCS" & it would get a 4-12 grade. I only have $2,000 left

Fairwell to part of my collection, but for a good reason!!

What do I do when i want to keep my coins but want something I have dreamed of as far back as I can remember? I have come across an opportunity to purchase a 1969 Ford Mustang Convertible, and I am torn between my collection and this car. I have done a little research on this car and have found that it is potentialy a very valuable automobile, but I will have to part with some of my coins to finance it. When i came upon the car the seller wanted $10,000.00 for it, after viewing it and research

Dropped and Broke My Camera

I was taking pictures of coins to sell on eBay..... in order to buy old gold coins. So instead, I had to buy a replacement for what I broke. I went for the same model camera, this one is a refurbished model for $79 and free shipping. It's only a small $$$ hit, but now I have to wait for the camera to arrive to list any more coins. This is one of the last pictures I took before the drop! This coin is for sale on eBay now.

A tale of two 1914d wheat cents

how I turned a raw 1st spouse coin into pennies Once upon a time I bought two Dolley Madison 1st spouse coins the day they went on sale from the mint, one unc, one proof. With great hopes I sent them off to NGC for grading hoping for a matched set of 70's but was disapointed only the Proof coin got a 70, the unc coin came back a 69. Now we will fast forward to a couple of weeks ago. As I was searching the auction sites as I'm apt to do (probably to much). I was looking for deals on modern comm

fun and frustrating.. When I last left off, I had sat down with B** and we were discussing what to do with the 5 toolboxes of coins. He has decided to leave them all to K***'s 15 year-old daughter for her college fund. My part is to separate out the coins that will potentially get more money if certified..and to sort/catalog the remainder...here are some of the finds in the first 4 boxes: --700 silver dollars--most BU of common dates ( $25-50 each in 62/63) and the semi-key and keys are al

Error coins and NGC

Weak Edges and 2009 Lincoln pennies I know I had emailed NGC earlier with no response if they were going to recognize either the weak edges of the 2009 SAC's or Prezs and any of the doubled dies of the 2009 Lincoln pennies. I see there was a pair of weak edges of the 2009 SAC's on FeeBay from NGC. Those are the only two I have ever seen, all the rest are graded from PCGS. So far, No doubled dies from the 2009 Lincoln pennies from either one thus far. The question I have to all you Societ

Lyin' Eyes-Not the Eagles 1975 Hit Song

Doctored photographs Hi everyone, as a lot of you know I have been working hard on all my Lincoln Penny Registry sets and I have had a lot of help and friendly competition and met some new friends as well. I bought a coin the other day from Ebay that was encased in a PCGS holder and the seller provided very detailed close-ups of the coin and all looked good. Now the close-ups are similar too the ones that you would find on TeleTrades auction site. Let me also say right now that the coin was

I FINALLY UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM

NCS Registry points and a Harvard education have something in common! Hi everyone! I completely understand the concept now. You can graduate with the big boys with only 50% of the grades. Sounds very familiar. I see it now. A Harvard grad with"Environmental Damage". Oh......I sent one of my body bagged coins to a very high up forensics lab. My silver coin had a surface rust stain? I am guilty of rusty silver too? They told me how to remove it.....I did......I will now see if it gra

EVALUATION or DEVALUATION?

I guess I have to do this on my own too? Hey everyone! My eyes are so tired of looking at coins for submission. Will they grade this? Will this not pass? Why did that green spot have to be on such a pretty coin? Bah.....humbug! I have to buy several coins to find one suitable for evaluation? WOW! There goes the budget. I guess with the older circulated coins, it is almost a necessity to do this? I got burned severely on my last NGC submission, so I am trying a different approach.

Only 9/14 coins sent in graded

Only 9/14 coins sent in were graded by NGC. Yes, I've got a lot to learn about which coins to send in for grading. So far out of the 14 coins I have submitted to NGC, only 9 were graded; 5 returning in the infamous "body bag".Mind you, I got the opinion of 2 coin dealers, both of whom I've been buying from for 5 years, prior to submitting these coins. One was even encapsulated by another grading service.Oh well, I read that NGC is starting something new, like encapsulating "ungradable" coins, n

Great year or bad year?

Added over 5000 points to my sets.... Hi Everyone, Well 2009 has been a good year, added over 5,000 registry points to my sets. But the bad news is still in 10th place on my Lincoln set 1909 to present. Still in 11th place with my 1909 to 1958 set and 15th place with "my love", the 1909 to 1933 set! I also added a semi-key coin with a 1952-s FBL half to my very in-active Franklin set. So why do I say a bad year, well I have not moved up in any sets, or maybe just one set by one place!?
