"I broke my promise"... Oh well, only kinda sorta...

I knew it would be difficult, if not impossible... Greetings Collectors, Several days ago I made a promise in a post that I would refrain from further purchases (coins) 'til I was ready to post a pic along with the announcment of a coin purchase. I have been trying very hard to get my photo skills to the point, I could post a pic with each and every jounal I posted. My plea for help has been received by over a dozen fellow collectors. I thank each and every one of you for the quick and helpf

Short Set of Walkers

What got me started on the Short Set of Walkers........ I attended a coin show where I saw a complete short set of Walkers all PCGS, all MS65 and all of them were in the Old Green Holders (OGH). It was a nice collection and so I decided to put one together myself. It took me about nine months ( and some luck ) and I was finally able to put my own set together with all old green holders in MS65. I have since picked up additional Walkers in NGC holders as well and in higher grades. It helps

BUY A CHEAP SCANNER!

In my opinion,it's the best for less. Hi all! If I wasn't on W.K.F's iggy list I could offer an option. A few of us, on limited budgets, had the same imaging problems. I personally bought a Epson, Perfection V300 Photo, scanner. I got it(new)on eBay for $74.49 shipping included. It isn't like a pro's studio camera, but I am happy with it. Installation is a snap and it will take some shots a Hasselblad never thought of. Another Society member has a Canon he got at a garage sale for $3.

A Trip to the Casino, lack of coins????

Things are different now.... Greetings everyone! Yesterday I took a 2 hour bus trip from Salt Lake City to Wendover, Nevada to see the Alice Cooper show at a concert hall there, and to gamble and eat a buffet at the casino. I was excited to go for many reasons, which is more suitable for a blog than a journal entry here, but one of the aspects that excited me was the idea that maybe while playing slots, I would encounter an old nickel, or a pre-1964 quarter, but things have changed.

Hey Hey I made it finally

Top 50 and early to boot Well I'm a pretty happy camper today. As many of you know my goal was to make it in the Top 50 collection with my Kennedy's before year's end. Today I was fortunate enough to climb to 47 with the addition of one of the years I had been searching for sometime. The 1970 PF69UC. I still have 8 more coins to acquire to fill the remaining slots so hopefully I can do that before years end. I wish everyone good luck in attaining their goals as I have reached one of m

"I Want to Buy... your help"

Posts of late have "lit" a fire under my butt! Greetings Collectors, I am going to try and make this short. I want to buy lessons, over the phone, if possible to get to the point where I can get photos of my coins here on this site. What pics I have all need to be trashed and started over. These were done my daughter a good while back and while I saw they were not acceptable then, I did not have the heart to complain and ask her to help me do them over as she did not want to do them in the f

Fond Memories

Getting back to my roots and remembering why it is I collect coins. The recent post ?HEY BUDS----- YA GOT ANY PICS?? by Six Mile Rick is refreshing in that Rick exhibits his true heart and passion for collecting coins. Part of what I find refreshing is Ricks collecting passion for Morgan Dollars. One thing I can always count on is Rick attaching a photograph of one of his Morgan Dollars to each of his posts. The aforementioned post, while short on information, is loaded with passion. It?s Rick

I love the great journals here

Totally agree with the no proof eagles. Also, sov images uploaded.. Maybe I will abort collecting proof silver eagles at all. I only have 2007 2008 in PF70, and 2000-2003 PF69 Why bother. The US Mint has made its worst decision ever. Mint 50,000 of them instead and put them up one or two per person ! look at the 1995-W for crying out loud With all the economic problems, I agree melt 50,000 of the Braille's ! what a joke. I will probably stop collecting commems now as well, even though my N

US Mints Silver American Eagle decision is suicidal to the program

Us Mints decision to not offer the 2009 Proof Silver Eagle is the biggest self destructive attack to the SAE program, and coin collecting programs in the US market. You see the US Mint had very little passion following their market in the early 80?s. Then someone in their marketing programs came up with great ideas. They decided to promote the sales of gold and silver when they initiated the sales of Gold American Eagle and Silver American Eagles, thank you Ronald Reagan. Then they decided to

Lincoln Bicentennial Set

Wow, tough to get a order in! I noticed on the US Mint web site that they have acknowledged that their servers were unprepared for the demand in processing orders. I was there trying to order a set at noon. It took me 2 hours to finally get my order through. I feel fortunate to have gotten a set. I'm wondering whether NGC will have a special set designation for these sets (similar to the 20th Anniversary Eagles). If so I plan to send in my set unopened and cross my fingers for the best.

Hard times; Great Victories; Getting Older

Sometimes when we feel we're getting smacked around, that just means we're doing better than we thought. It always seems a bit funny to me to see the surprises life hands us. When we feel like we're taking a beating, we usually win our greatest victories. I noted a couple of weeks ago that I had taken the GRE. I had all the scaled scores except the Analytical Writing, which I honestly didn't expect to be all that great. I hadn't had to write a timed analytical essay in quite a while and I di

"Very Very Low Mintage Modern Gold & Silver"...

"A few coins worth a second look" (Maybe a first look for some) Greetings Collectors, I should really stop and think before I write about certain things. "Hindsight" is so "20 20". I am going to try very hard from this point going forward to not be derogrotory or mean spirited no matter what is said, to me or about me or about any of my friends. One of my fellow collectors put it so well when he said he tries to "never feed the trolls". Having said that about "hindsight", I want to touch on

How I Save (?) Money!!

You have to spend to save, right? I bought in excess of $5,000 buying coins on eBay in the last three months (not bragging or complaining). So I had a $110 of eBay Bucks to spend. Picked up this little near-gem (1876 25c MS 64) because I bought it on 'sale', $110 off my offer price. What a steal! I'm not sure who stole from who but I got a nice coin for a nice price. Anyhow, you get the picture, spend $5k so you can spend another $1,000 to save $110. On another subject, I have to agree

Good Lighting and Cameras are only part of the Equation!

Good editing between photographing your coins and posting your coins is an important part of the process. With a fair degree of frequency, I have noticed a number of journal posts on the subject of coin photography. Most of the posts I have read seem to focus on lighting and cameras. These issues are very important, and I agree to be central to good coin photography. More often than not, I have had to take a picture up to a dozen times to get the effect I desire. Issues I contend with are hold

A Shallow "nitwit" and a US Mint fiasco...

Both are/were an equal "Pain in the " Greetings again collectors (and complainers) Today was the day to order the much touted Lincoln five coin special proof set. I, in pure "journal fashion", am sharing a collector experiance. I am blessed to have some really nice and very fast computer equipment. But having it and knowing how to use it is a different story indeed. I thought I would sit down at the monitor at 11:30 and attempt to log on to the US mint web site, one that I have logged onto m

The US Mint Web site

Just keep trying and trying some day you might be able get your order in Today was such a train wreck. I tried to order the new limited to 50,000 Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Sets. I am sorry to say things have not gotten much better with this vender than the last one. It took over 2 1/2 hours to get my order in. Why, why I ask. I can get sporting tickets and concert tickets to the hotest events, but order some coins and the web site is lock up tighter than Fort Knox. US Mint let me give some f

Proof Coinage from 1950-1970...Part Two...

Techniques pertaining to all proofs of this time-frame but more so detailing the "Franklin Half Dollar" Greetings Collectors, I write this completly exausted from the ordeal encountered getting confirmed on my purchase of the "Lincoln five coin proof set" that was offered today beginning at twelve noon. The details of this will take up an entire post later this week. All I can say is, "what an ordeal". Proof coinage has come a long way to what we have today. The proofs of the 50's through

JUST MY OPINION!

You know I had to say something........ Hello all! I try for short, and to the point, but it often fails. First, by definition, professionals are not necessarily experts. Anyone can be a professional. Experts are those that are highly knowledgeable in a certain field. Some experts are not "professionals". Most professionals are not "experts." It's a greed thing. Next, the crossover thing. I look at coins that are, what they are, and then say......."what if?" Well, most of you know I

Scary cossovers for the Halloween season. Part 10

These coins putting on new costumes. I hope. Wow, for me this is more scary than seeing "Paranormal Activity". The five slab below have been sent in to NGC for crossover. In the past I was doing the break out routine but I didn't want to take a chance for low grades on these five slabs. I did give NGC the option of giving the 1805 1p a PF-62 as it is a little beatup. I do have more to crossover but I'm thinking these five would be a good test of my nerves. I also sent in a bunch of Conder

My First CAC Experience

After all, they are the professionals... As I wrote in my last journal, I went to Coinfest this past weekend. The Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC) has offered collectors free evaluation of up to 20 certified coins at that show. (See their website, www.caccoin.com, for limitations on what they accept.) Prior to the show, I went through my coins, grade by grade, to choose my opinion of the 20 best-for-the-grade examples - the 20 coins I thought had the best chance of getting a little g

Modern Coins Don't Sell

Priced at $.99 to start the auction, no bids for a graded proof Return to Monticello nickel! As many that read my Journals may know, I am in the process of re-focusing my collection. So I am selling all of my modern coins. I am re-investing the proceeds in Old Gold COins. I have been trying to sell my graded proof nickels and Sacagawea's. Selling as auctions, low opening prices and I am unable to get any bids. So I caution anyone out there that thinks they are growing their investment with
