new aquisition

New boy in the house! Hi! I'm a new member, just checking trying this journal thing out. A few weeks ago I bought this really cool coin, a 1921 Mexican, 2 Peso in UNC condition. Silver 2 pesos are really hard to get and this one might qualify as a rarer BU. I would post a picture, but i have no idea how to. This coin is awesome to a kid like me. Thanks for listening to a kid, bye.

Another Nice Weekend...Fall Edition

A beautiful, sunny, 75 degrees, a gorgeos November day in Iowa. I couldn't ask for a better day to take as a day of vacation. I live about 22 miles north of Keokuk, and their local coin club has a spring (middle of May) 2 day show and a fall show (usually always the first Saturday of November). So this afternoon I hopped in the car and went down. I had a couple of raw coins I wanted to sell, and thought I would see what was available that I would want to buy. I sold the 2 ocins first, and al

Helpful and Interesting Books

Good books that enhance your coin collecting experience. As I wrote last week, the previous month was an active one for coin purchases. However, last month I made a few other numismatic purchases that often fall under the radar screen. The internet is an invaluable source of information with which to research your coins, and I have used it to find a wealth of information. Nevertheless, for some things there is no substitute for a good library as I still enjoy thumbing through my old Red Books.

Gold & Silver Is Climbing

Up and Up It Goes What really does it all mean? To look at the gold and silver going up is an uneasy feeling. On the one hand it offers to some coin collectors a chance to cash in and make a few dollars but it also seems to reflect the instability of our economy and that may not be so good. Some commentators are saying it is not to be trusted and others glory in all the rise in precious metals, personally I find it is a little unsettling. I think it is a time to be cautious, things could go in

My Plans for Veterans Day

Photos!! Greetings!! I'll have the day off on Veterans Day, so amidst remebering the sacrafice my Great Uncle made as a POW in WW2, and my father's service in Korea, I'll be doing my re-do on my SAE set. The practice photos look excellent, better than the photos currently online, so I am super excited!! All the BEST!

More money...Less service

Even NGC has joined the ranks of short changing the customer. I recently decided to renew my paid membership, but because I had taken a break from the ranks of the paid membership, they charged me $109 for a year, vs the standard $99 for a regular renewal. Since paying that money i have tried to see my order status, and everytime I try (with 1 exception), I get the message "Database is not available". It was this way all of the last weekend, because I tried 7 or 8 times to see the status...s

It wasn't really a lie, just a little fib.

After all it is November! Those of you that read my last post probably remember that I said something to the effect of "don't expect another post from me until after Christmas". As you can see I was fortuate enough to find some moola for another purchase and here she is...1870 $3 gold AU55.

One of The "Most" Stunning Two Coin Sets!

"In my opinion"... Greetings Collectors, As 2009 began, many awaited the release of the much "hyped" Ultra High Relief "Saint". I too could not wait for that day, halfway through the month of January. I can still remember the night before that day at "noon", when sales would begin. As I lay in bed, thoughts of how I had saved my money and had the funds set aside."BUT" I had also been "drooling" since August 2008 about a set, a set that was much different than any other, a set I thought I mus

Regisrty Points vs. $$$ Paid

My newest Half Eagle acquisition is my biggest point getter, but not even close to the cost of my Charlotte Half Eagle My Charlotte Half Eagle, in XF condition, gets 2048 Registry points and cost about $2400. My new Half Eagle, in AU condition, gets 2401 Registry points and cost $1000 less than the Charlotte Half Eagle. And I paid a premium for that coin, an 1857 S AU50. I guess I'll never understand the algorithm that assigns Registry points. This is another of my recently re-imaged Ha

Continuing the collecting fever

When I turned 50... When I turned 50, I realized that I was at the 2/3rd junction of my life. My children are still quite young yet, so I needed to give them the collecting fever, or what I have collected will end up on the market and in a lot of other people's collections. Now I have started my children on the path of collecting. Hopefully, that won't happen to all of my coins. I have collected primarily NGC, so I started my daughter with PCGS coins. It is a nice way to break the collection.

"Jump Out At You" coins

sometimes you have to pay a little extra.. A friend of mine, who works for an auction house, recently said something that must have planted itself in my brain. I didn't give it much thought at the time but it must have germinated until the proper time and then his offhand remark blossomed up into an enlighting bit of advice. His comment? He was discussing some coin images that someone had posted and he said " oh yes, I remember that coin. I had that in my collection for almost 10 years."

"Lincoln Coin & Chronicle Set"

Sometimes a picture is worth a "thousand" words... In this case, it's barely worth the few words here... Greetings Collectors, Speaking of thousand, which is about how many shots I have taken in the last few weeks, I am still encountering mega problems with taking the pictures, as in lighting, distance, angle, glare and on and on. Now I am having some MAJOR problems with "Picasa 3", & with the "exporting" to a folder and then when I want to put the pics into a set, only one pic is showin

Its nice getting coins back from NGC

I received my errors back Soon I will image my errors in slabs, for my $1 and $2 error sets. I love these sets I have started, and am now thinking of selling up my US sets to pursue the more costly error. I missed the coin shown below which fetched nearly $2000 AUD (inc commission) at auction last week. It is very tough to consider selling sets I have worked hard on, but I might sell my commemorative proofs set which has quite a few already, all PF70UC only.. Same goes for the First Spous

Added Bio

Added new Saint to collections I added my bio today. I also added a high-end MS66 Saint to my collections, replacing a dingy MS65 that I sold off in July.

"Testing, One, Two"... (Part two)

A little more trial & error... Greetings Collectors, Just wanted to see if the "colors" on the "obverse" of my 1956 Franklin would show as well as the reverse. As I said before this is my favorite coin "series" in silver and some of the colors, on these mint set Franklins, are awesome. Lots of sulfer in the packaging associated with those 1950's mint sets. Anyway this is the "flip side" of the '56. It's a PCGS MS-65 with Full Bell Lines. Sorry for the last post being so long. I can get

Coin of the Month for November

And the coin of the month for November is... an 1853 Arrows and Rays quarter. This piece is graded MS-64 by PCGS. The strike is nice as is the luster. Medium toning. This coin was stickered by CAC. For a change of pace, I will attach a photo of the reverse.

Morgans

Carson City I just added two Carson City Morgans. The date are 1883cc and 1884cc one of them is in the GSA Holder certified by NGC at MS65 and the other is 1884cc certified by PCGS. These were to good to pass by and I have them in my registry. I already have the 1882cc in PL with NGC. I hope to find some others soon. Best to all.

October was a great collecting month.

One more coin to share. Sorry, all. I usually am not this verbose, but I would like to share another October acquisition with you; 1891-CC half eagle MS 62. I am probably going to have to take a breather for the next month or two, so just in case, have a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas! Dan
