Just Muddling Through!

Enjoying our freedoms. I must admit that some of the posts I read have become mundane and verbose in my opinion, but of course, I don't have to read them. I'm sure we would all agree that nobodys posts are as interesting as mine, . I read almost all of the journal entries and have seldom been disappointed, learning along the way, and appreciating the fact that someone had something of interest to share with me. Everyone has a right to be heard or in this case read and I certainly wouldn't w

I MISSED OUT BY 1 COIN!

I looked for a nice one , but........... Hi everyone! I hope all enjoyed the Holiday. I have been busy trying to image the missing few in my sets. My NZ 1d set will be ahead by 1 point whenever NGC gets the certification from PCGS. This is going to be a close one. I wanted to enter my NZ half crowns, but the 1961 wasn't really a beauty. I figure an XF, at best. Rather than waste a grading, I'd wait. Well, I found a lot nicer coin, but a bit too late for the competition. Oh well. I could

Lehmann's Nicks

Here we go again..... Well, I did it today. I've been tossing around the idea of starting a new set. Today I did. Going with the Jefferson nickel proofs. I will try to put together a nice set. I wanted to collect a set I liked, and most importantly, could do over time. Won't be in a huge hurry to do this one. Going to take my time and have some fun!!!! Should be a bit less expensive to gather as well. I started it with the 2009 S, NGC PF-70, which I won on E-Bay about 15 minutes ago

Could/should NGC and PCGS work toward creating a universal grading standard?

It appears grading standards differ around the world. One of the news headlines on the NGC home page reads ?Important Polish Auction Includes Hundreds of NGC-Certified Coins?. Yes this is a publicity opportunity for NGC and this is not the first world auction to host large quantities of NGC-certified coins. To me however, this is a very important step in the international standardization of coin grades. Those of us that spend a lot of time on eBay bidding or just looking to checkout the mar

First Stike, Early Releases,and Autographed.

Long Term ,versus Short Term. There maybe some montary advantage to theses short term but history shows little to no advantage longe term.In 2007 a collector in FL suited both PCGS and NGC for the usage of the term First Stike infering the had a higher value PCGS settled very quickly but value is not known but NGC elected to go to court but NOT a good idea before trial they settled for about 650,000 most of the money going to the ANA and the trail law f

Proof Buffalos Early Release Label causes controversy

Many of the responses to my earlier journals state that NGC?s Early Release label is a farce. But I say market conditions prove otherwise. I posted a journal a couple of days ago regarding the anguish of getting and shipping 5 proof buffalo coins to NGC for grading. The dilemma is that we need 5 coins in our shipment to meet the guidelines to submit coins for grading. 5 Gold Buffalos at current market prices is $7300.00. The US post office only lets you insure packages up to $5,000.00 for prio

U.S. Mint Suspends Sales of 2009 Gold Eagles...and...

I figured something like this would happen... Greetings Collectors, I have been at the computer all afternoon & this evening "tweaking" some photos and descriptions in several of my sets and had talk radio on in the background, getting my daily dose of "right wing" extreamism. During one of the news breaks while listening to "The Savage Nation", it was said that today, the Mint stopped selling the one ounce "bullion" Gold Eagles to all of the large distributors who buy them in bulk and w

Never taking collecting for granted

Thanksgiving and my most recent collecting experiences. Thanksgiving is one of the best holidays to stop and take stock of your life. Nobody can really say that they are self-made; each of us needs other people in our lives in order to prosper. The term thanksgiving implies that we give thanks TO the ones who have contributed so much to our lives. I give thanks to my parents for raising me, to my doctors for keeping me alive after a life threatening illness, to my employer for giving me a job

STATEHOOD QUARTER COLLECTING AND FAMILY TIME

Creating a "Family Heirloom" A few days ago, I was looking through the few rolls of Statehood Quarters that I put away before losing interest. Obviously, this is not a prime collecting area for me. I began thinking about how many rolls and partial sets of these coins are tucked away in households all over the country. What a shame- All of the government money and effort that has gone into promoting these coins, and it appears that we are not going to reach "escape velocity". My thoughts t

Slow and steady looses the race

Submissions sent to NGC are at high risk because of the increase in gold prices and NGC guidelines. I find myself in interesting situation. NGC states that you need to have a minimum of 5 coins graded per submission. This is fine if you?re in the neighborhood. If I send 5 coins through registered mail it takes 5 to 7 business days to reach them. If I send 5 gold buffalos to NGC for grading the total value of my shipment is $7,300.00 in raw gold costs. The US mail insurance limit is $5,000.0

No slot yet

Ref: My Kilo addition Hey, As a follow-up note to my new Kilo coin, there is not a slot for it yet. I have sent requests to NGC to add the slot for this coin. I will try to get a pic in the journal in the next week.

Picked up some more silver today

Gotta love those KILO coins! Good Day All, Broke down and bought another Kilo coin today. Price went up since the last one. DUH! Silver went up! I got the 2010P Koala MS70. Another top pop coin 30/3. I just can't stop from picking these up. Silver bulk (kilo at a time) is a good way to go. I would need a lot of ASE's to equal 1 of these coins. Silver is where it is at for a little guy like me. I would love the return on Gold, but initial cost is prohibitive at this time. I would also hat

Thanksgiving Almost Here!!

I just love it!! Greetings! Well, T-day just around the corner and my excitement is almost uncontrollable!! I am all set to make the meal, which has also made me more excited for all things "coin". I also have finally found a car, have not had a car of my own for a few years..been bussing it or my wife has been toting me all over, I'll be buying my car tomorrow. FINALLY can afford it again. Been a hard little while economically for me, but I am now out of the haze of no money. Whi

I don't Understand Teletrade

is it an auction site or a sales site? I have been confused about this for a while and have found through chat and forums, so are many others. If you'll excuse what must sound like a rant, a couple of confused questions and some things that I know have happened. Maybe someone can PM me with some insight. Facts: 1) I have been high bidder at the close of certain auctions and not won the item. 2) The opening bid does not appear to be the "reserve" price, in fact a reserve is not posted. 3)

I'm Thankful for the 2009 Buffalos and their a deal, but only for the rest of this week!

Silver and gold are on the rise the proof buffalos from the US mint for 2009 opened at $1360.00 priced at $1410.00 today Thursday they will probable be $1460.00. Currently the 2009 Proof 70 Buffalos are selling for the low price of 1,600.00 on EBay. Last years PF 70 Buffalo runs for $3,300.00. What a deal 1600.00 for a 2009 Proof Buffalo. If gold opens above 1,150.00 for three days this week the mint will raise the price of the 2009 raw coin to 1460.00. Now doesn't it sound like the buffalo is

An "Unusual" Medal Found...

Re-organizing my safe & touching on some "security" methods... Greetings Collectors, I am feeling a little "lost" right now as my mad rush to finish taking my coin photos is, for the most part, complete. I am checking off items that I will not need at home so that I can make a "deposit" back into the boxes at the bank. I do not like to keep hardly anything of value at the house. I may be overly cautious as I live in a pretty nice area with my neighbors on two sides somewhat retired and "

The path is clear.

Graduation is in 28 days. This was a fun week. I haven't posted in about 4 weeks. After my last post the senior design project kicked into high gear. I was getting to the computer lab at 8 AM and not leaving except for lunch and dinner until 9 PM every day, even on the weekend. Things got so bad that one of my teammates started having nightmares about the project on a nightly basis. My team finally got it done though. We turned in our report at 9:00 AM on Tuesday 11/17, 7 hours before the subm

THE CHANGING PERSONALITY OF COINS

"Many Faces of Eve" Complex. All coins start their lives as discs of commerce- each one equal/ the same. Some are plucked from economic channels and begin their careers as numismatic objects. As a collectible, they are different than an "every day spending" coin. They join a collection as a new kid on the block. They receive our attention; are judged as to how well they will fit in. A few join as a Star of the collection immediately. They were acquired with that intention. They enter

"The Obverse"

"Or is it the Reverse?" I couldn't leave you with just "half" the picture... Also I'm pretty sure the "bust" is King George the 5th and I think it's a piece from Great Britian or one of the British territorys. I just don't know what the rest of the markings/letters mean. Thanks in advance...

"What is This"???

And does anyone know its history/value?... Greetings Collectors, I am coming to an end to my coin photography and the editing of same. I am not sure how many of you know exactly how time consuming taking as many photos as I have taken has been. Not wanting to sound "braggy", but if there was an award given for taking and editing as many pics as I have, and in such a short period of time, I would like to think I would win it, "hands down". Since the 17th of Oct. I have literly spent several h

I Love the Countdown Clock

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Greetings!! It's almost Thanksgiving break from school, and the courses have been extra time consuming this past week or so. I have been tuning in and reading everyones journals, but have not had too much time to contribute lately, and I am glad I can add some things here today. Once again I feel the cold chill and festive feelings in the air that for me associate this time to my first excursions into coin collecting. This is also the first year I have eno
