"Did You Know The Denver Mint Was"?...Part Two...

established in 1862 but used only as an "Assay" Office for the 1st 43 years... Greetings Collectors, As I begin my 81st journal entry of 2009, I quickly scanned over the topics and subjects of past journals, and could recall only one somewhat controversial subject. I thought that pretty good for me. Anyway I just wanted to say that I am so very thankful for all of you here at the CS and I read every one of your journals, many times more than once. I have learned much about coins and photogra

In Rare Form This Week...

Some days I just don't do anything right... Some days I wonder how I keep track of my own head. Last week I was thinking all week about this auction for a coin that I wanted that was looking like it would go for a good price. The day of the auction (Saturday) I was feeling bad and I completely forgot about it until 90 minutes after it ended. I just wanted to smack myself for the stupidity of it. No, I don't use automatic bidding programs like "bidnapper." It just doesn't sit well with me to

Sellig Slabs on EBAY

What I Do When I sell a slab on eBay I use 4 pics the whole slab front and back plus a closer shot of just the coin front and back. I have always done it this way as it is what I would like to see when I am Buying. ebay is so big that they do rely on people to report policy violations. They must have alot of them to look at beause I have reported many and only seen a few get canceled. later JimL4004

WE MUST BE CLOSING IN ON JUDGEMENT DAY?

I never thought about this side of the coin. Hello All, A few last minute emails from friends and competitors alike. Thanks for wishing me luck, and to those, and everyone, I wish you all the best this year. A few brought up a category in which we do not enter, yet still get graded. It's the Journals. I answered........What??? With all that went down this last year, I'd probably be last in consideration. I do believe some changes were made after all. Maybe the journals did their part?

THE OBVERSE IS OBVIOUS

There is a better way! Hello Everyone, Why, all of a sudden, are we worried what eBay does? They just want the extra $0.15 for the second image. I will only use the obverse of my graded coins for sale. It has all the information, as well as the serial #. If eBay doesn't like it, I'll put it on eBid for free. If you are worried about a particular NGC or PCGS slab's authenticity, there is a place in both grading services to check any slab they have graded. NGC's is on the pulldown of grading a

TIME-LINE: THE "BIRTH" OF THE JEFFERSON NICKEL

1938: TIME FOR A CHANGE: It's about what it was like in those days, an'what "Our Designer of the Jefferson Nickel" went through, and had to accomplish,to get this Winning-Design'. Felix Oscar Schlag (December 4, 1891 ? March 9, 1974) Back in 1938, there was a big rush, to get rid of the Indian/Buffalo nickel, the public was wanting something different for the nickel, it had used up its 25 year life span. The Treasury Department decided to have a National Competition for a New-Design, Honori

Silver Eagle

Not What I Expected I recently sent in a Silver Eagle from another grading company and it was graded MS70. I wanted to get into an NGC slab so I could list it in my registry of coins, so I sent it off to NCS as it had some discoloration and I wanted it conserved. They in turn sent it to NGC for grading and I was greatly hoping for the same grade as was previously given to the coin. Yet when I got it back, though it was conserved and look great, it only had a MS69 grade. I am disappointed that

In response to Sarah's Coins

Perhaps some common sense or cents! Lawsuits have been filed against Ebay and motions for restraining orders and injunctions and all the legalese because as much as Ebay would like to create a monopoly (which is in fact what they were trying to do) and control (or limit) the sale of certain slabs, monopolies are illegal (except government monopolies like the US Mint and the US Postal Service). SO they try to cut their losses (common sense) until such time as they are big enough, like the gover

"Did You Know The Denver Mint Was"?...Part One

"Established many decades before the first coins were struck there"? This, part one deals with the establishment of "Denver the little community of humble beginnings"... Greetings Collectors, First of all I want to thank each and every one of you that have sent me e-mails within the last 24 hours. I never expected the responce that I received. I was not going to continue this type of posting without getting the "go ahead" from those of you who read these journals. I will say, I spend a great

Did I meet my 2009 Goals?

Some goals yes, some goals no! but I did have the best of intentions!!!In my final journal entry of 2008, I stated the below set of goals for 2009."Goals for 2009 include:1) Work on completing my American gold Eagle 1/4 oz sets2) Add new coins to my 1891 Mint Set3) Add more coins to my Gold Half Eagle sets.4) Add more coins to my Gold Buffalo sets"Some of these goals are met and will continue to be a goal for 2010. Those old and new carry-over goals are:1) Add new coins to my 1891 Mint Set2) Ad

Important new policy for coins listed on Ebay....Continues

Does Ebay ever stop an auction early....... Pictures of slabbed coins on Ebay.... I hate to say this, but I need help here with dear Ebay. They have not stopped any auctions that I have noticed on Ebay? Maybe they send the sellers a notice, which I have no way of knowing, but most big sellers still do not show a picture of a full slab! I have been doing this for over 3 weeks and have not seen one auction I have watched closed down early.... So help me by sending Ebay a note and lets see if w

"Daring Daylight Robbery at the Denver Mint"

Happened about a week before Christmas 75 years ago 1922... Greetings Collectors, Since my post of yesterday, my curiousity has gotten the better of me and I had to find out all I could concerning this robbery at the Denver Mint. First of all I want to say, that if what I am writing about, is not the thing to do here at the CS, then drop me a line. If I get ten votes to the positive, I will continue along these same "somewhat" numismatic lines. If however I receive five votes to the negative

Returned submissions

I got my submissions back a few day ago... I got my submissions back a few day ago and out of the 6 I sent only one came back as a Pf 70. Of course this was my fist time I sent anything to be graded and I expected to make some mistakes. I thought I was going to get the coins back due to a mistake on my part. I guess I didn't do that bad. You can check out my Proof Silver Eagle Set and look at the 1992p. This is the one that got the 70.

What a year it has been!

So many terrific acquisitions! I have been very blessed this year. Though I'm fighting off a cold at the moment, my family and I have continued to enjoy good overall health. I continue to be "indispensable" in my job, which is well insulated from the ups and downs of the economy. My wife will finish her MBA this month (and hopefully get a better job in the near future). Numismatically, it's been pretty good too. The year started with preparation for the sale of the Naftzger middle date larg

A Note from a Proud NGC Member

In the spirit of the season... Greetings!! I have been busy (again) this past week gearing up for my finals in humanities and poli-sci so my remarks have been absent here for just a little while, though I have been dropping by just to read a few journals here and there. I have been a member of NGC for 2 years now and I am always amazed at how this site has helped us all in our collecting goals, and keeps us all excited about the hobby. I believe without The Collectors Society, our

Some "Must Read" Interesting Facts Concerning Coinage From The Early 1920's

Also some facts about the Mint Director at the time... Greetings Collectors, There has been much "to do" about our current U.S.Mint Director, Mr. "Ed" Moy. He has not made many friends of late in his decision (and it "IS" his decision) to not strike any 2009 Proof American Gold and Silver Eagles. While I do own most of the Silver issues and a few of the proof $5 & $10 1/10th oz. in Gold and platinum, I am more upset that the "fractionals" in gold & Platinum have, for the most part ce

"Last" Opportunity to get a very Low Mintage Set...

I realize $ is tight, but I think this set is a real "Sleeper"... Greetings Collectors, I have seen the Lincoln Coin & Chronicle Set selling in numerous locations for $179.95. I have not checked E-Bay and it may be indeed cheaper there or it could be more. I even called one of the "major" retailers that advertize in both of the "weekly" coin papers. Every month there are three that I can think of that have "multi-page ads in the first dozen or so pages of these publications. When I calle

SANTA GOT HERE EARLY!

I can melt all my Eagles now. Hello everyone! We all collect metals taken from the Earth. What is done with them is quite amazing. I've had platinum and gold. I never had a silver bar. I've had aluminum and tin cans. I have worked all year on a pre-decimal penny set from NZ. I chose NZ as no one was interested in a few lousy half silver,cupro-nickel, and copper coins. Ebay had a half page of New Zealand coins and they were extremely cheap. I guess my passion for these unimportant sets caught

What A RollerCoaster

Is The Sky Falling? With all this up and down in the precious metals, we only can wonder what an effect this will have on the coins we collect. The US Mint is raising their prices to keep up with gold and silver as it escalates. The modern coinage will be effected as precious metals will push up the costs to manufacture the coinage. If there were any good answers to the economy someone would have come up with a solution but no one seems to know just where it will all end. And....there seems to

A "Very" Lucky Find At My Bank...

Didn't Hit The Lottery but Close... Greetings Collectors, The "find" I speak of did not happen recently but actually two years ago today. The Washington Gold Dollars came out earlier in the year and the exact day I stopped at the bank is one I do not remember. It was not too long after these dollar coins had been released when reports started coming in that some of the coins had missed a part of the new minting process concerning the "edged lettering". More and more reports were coming in an

A New Beginning

The Youth In Us All Well, I hit 50 this year. I've been collecting coins (and baseball cards) on and off since the late 1960's. Yea, I started young. This year my youngest son, 12 years old, took quite an interest in the State Quarters. I think it was the Grizzly Bear on Alaska that really caught his attention. Well, I dug out all of my old coins and the two of us started looking through everything and organizing sets. Through the eyes of my son, I soon found the hours of pleasure of looking t
