"Santa Knows Best!"

Actually I should say, "The Kids know best!!!" Greetings Collectors, Here's wishing all of you had a very Merry Christmas! We are getting close to the end of yet another year. I will save the gory details of all my many failures and mistakes for a later post. One of the few things that I did get right was buying as much Silver & Gold as I could possibly afford. Just wished I had bought more. Again that ugly "greed monster" trying to rear its ugly head. Also an additional positive is th

Common Cents?

A penny for your thoughts I have been collecting pennies for many years and I have a nice set of circulated Lincoln pennies in an album, I just recently started building graded sets, one for circulated coins recognizing my budget is limited at best, I decided that I build a MS66 or better set of circulated pennies and a PF69 set of proof memorial pennies. (I do recognize that PF69 also may be next to impossible to find in pre-83 pennies.) I?m finding the challenge to be both fun and intrigui

Merry Christmas

Another Great year! Greetings All, Just a quick note to express my happiness for the Holiday Season. I enjoy the family times during this season. We all have the 1 relative that gets on your nerves but at this time of year you should put aside all the differences and enjoy each other. Life is a gift! You never know how much time you have to do it. So experience life to the fullest each day. I approach my collecting in a similar manner. I strive to do the best I can do (afford) and truly en

New Barber Half

Looks like it was just minted I finally replaced my Barber Half. I sold off a PR67CAM that I wasn't happy with. The new one is only PR66CAM, but it is a superior example of the grade. The piece looks like it was minted in 2009 instead of 1999. This coin has no right to exist, or so it seems.

My Year End Review For 2009

My Icelandic coin Collection Well its been a very interesting year for my collection of Icelandic coins. First, I found out that the 1939 1 Eyrir really had three different varieties for this date which I found the last one about two months ago, KM only states that there are only two. Second, I found a later die state repunched 9 of 29 for the 1929 10 aurar in a real nice unc. Third, A wonderful 1946 2 Kronur with great mint luster just like the day it was minted well maybe the next day. this

A huge Christmas present from NGC

Roosevelt Happiness! Just got the grade back on a coin I have been anxiously waiting on the past 2 weeks. It was a Roosevelt 1968D MS68 that I sent for designation review after picking up the coin from Teletrade. The coin was in an old NGC holder. Their pictures showed the bands a fully separated, but not listed on the holder. Sometimes, photos will not show the whole thing in enough detail. However, when I got the coin in hand, I hoped I hit a home run. The coin got the upgrade and now

Yet, Another Step on a Long Journey

I thought I stopped worrying about grades when I graduated college. As I wade further and further into the waters of collecting graded coins I am finding that I am confronting a question that I am sure many collectors having passed this way have faced. ?Should I buy the graded coins to populate my collections or should I submit my ungraded coins?? Never having submitted a coin before, I am not quite sure what to expect. With a purchase, I can be relatively certain of what I am getting but with

Have ya heard the great news?

A good New Year for all of us Friends,I received some news today that excited me so I wanted to pass it on.I know a lot of coins went down a little in value since last year same time but the news is they are going to go up. The number of collectors has doubled this year so now it will seem harder to find that special coin and when you do there will be twice the amount of bidders. If a dealer has a coin you want he is more than likely going to profit well because they can't keep any good coins

Looking Forward to 2010!

2009 in review and my goals for 2010. 2009 has been a banner year for my collection. I have spent more money on coins this year than during any other year prior. My first full year in the registry is part of the reason for my increased spending. After establishing the sets I wanted to collect, I feverishly went about populating them. With the focus of filling slots and my proclivity to compulsiveness, I very nearly completed a 20th century type set and completed a Wilhelmina 10 Gulden gold set

Upgraded Membership From Free

Upgraded Membership From Free So I finally took the plunge and upgraded my NGC account from a Free account to the Premium account. There are quite a few added features that I am excited to explore. I especially like the access to the NGC Census Report. This gives a way better prespective on my collection as I can actually see how many of a coin are actually out there. Another big perk that really got me to upgrade was the fact that I can finally submit coins myself. I especially like this

The Eagle Has Landed!!

Never thought I'd find one of these I could afford. Oh, the joy! A total mintage of 16,500 coins and PCGS has graded a measley 51 with none in MS from either service. In fact the highest graded specimen is an AU-55 (PCGS), AU-58 (NGC). The Smithsonian Institution example is a VF-30. Population: 13 in XF-40, 23 finer. Garrett and Guth in their excellent reference "Encyclopedia of U. S. Gold Coins 1795-1933" state that 'On many examples of this date, the mintmark is tiny and easily overl

My Christmas Present to Myself

plus a few others that I picked up Hi everyone Just wanted to share an early present that I picked up for myself. I have been slowly upgrading some of my Proof SAEs and this 2001 is my latest addition. I was going to purchase the reverse proof but I saw this one and changed my mind. Once I get the reverse proof, I will have SAEs in PF-70 from 1999 till now. At the same time I was also checking out the US Mint web site and looked at their "last chance" offers and decided to pick up 5 of the

Merry Christmas

A trivia contest. Win a fortune!! OK... it's not a fortune, but it is a numismatic prize. Here is the contest. Britannia has been a recognized symbol on British coinage for literally centuries. Look at the pictured coin. A precursor of Britannia, if you will. Tell me when (approx) and where this coin circulated. Correct answers will be placed into a drawing that I will hold Christmas Day. Send your response to me through this forum. All entries will receive an acknowledgment fr

Registry is also an inventory list

Do you know your coins...? Greetings to the numismatic world, Are you checking your list...? Once, twice, three times to see if your list is correct with the coins you have purchased/acquired. In purchasing/trading to acquire coins for any collection you are creating, you will notice that using the NGC registry list helps. Before using the registry list as a tool, I, myself, would physically display the set of coins and see what is needed. Plus with the knowledge of educating myself on th

How Much Is A Lincoln Penny Worth?

I gave away my most valuable coin. What is the most valuable Lincoln penny? The book value of a top pop 1909 S VDB or 1955 DDO is over $10,000. A 1922 will run you more than 10 times that amount at close to $125,000. I can safely say that these figures are not pocket change for most collectors and those prices are certainly well out of the range of my budget. Yet, I would argue that my most valuable penny was worth considerably more and I gave it away. One day in my class I was taking about

Holiday Season

Yes, I am going to say Merry Christmas to everyone! It's very early on a Saturday morning. The snow is falling and it is less than one week until Christmas Day!. This has been one of the most enjoyable years I've ever had when it comes to the Registry sets! I've managed to add some really nice coins to my sets, but more importantly, I've made many, many new friends! I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Please don't tell me that I should not because it

2006 Silver American Eagles PF 70

2006 Silver American Eagles PF 70 Today I received my 2006 W American Eagle PF70. As we know this was the 20th Anniversary American Eagle. I anticipate that the 2006 P Reverse PF70 will be quite difficult for me to obtain. I haven't really checked to see how hard it's going to be for me to physically obtain this coin, but I think that that cost is going to be the biggest issue. I'm starting to save fot the second 2006 PF70 American Eagle and cannot wait to I can get one. This will be an

"The Last Piece Arrived Today"

Now off to NGC they go... Greetings Collectors, The last coin I have been waiting on came today. The "Braille" Proof Dollar will now join the other fifteen coins to be sent out on Monday. I actually already had a Braille proof but knew this one would be here any day and I did not want to make the trip to the bank and then try and find it in one of the four boxes. One would think it a pleasant job to go digging through a bunch of coins, but to find one such as this was not something I wanted

Missing Edge Lettering Which One Finally got a Jefferson Missing Edge Lettering after months and months of waiting, this coin has eluded me for a long time but I guess the economy has changed a few minds of holding on to their coins as they need the cash (Sad) which has made it now affordable for me. Adding to a Beloved Set

I'm glad we didn't get so much snow last week! I'm sitting here facing the prospect of digging my cars out of two feet of snow. Although the snow is interrupting some shopping plans, at least it didn't come last weekend, when there was a nice little coin show in Annandale, Virginia. My wife was one in-class final exam away from completing her MBA. I decided it would be a nice diversion to combine a trip to that coin show with a visit to some places in DC that she wanted to see. We started

All Paid Up, Next Submission is Ready to Ship

Glad I had the fore sight to buy those raw SAE's Greetings!! I re-newed my NGC membership a couple of days ago, and this brings about a certain excitement/dilemma as when I do renew my paid membership, I scramble to find my next submission out of my coin drawer. Usually I am submitting this years mintage of SAE I just got from the Mint, but since there were no SAE's (W's or Proofs I mean) minted this year, This may have presented me with a problem. Sure, I have some older coins and some P

The Journey Not The Destination

Was it really In Lincoln's pocket? The snow was falling, there was a fire in the fire place and I sat in a recliner with my laptop. School had let out early for Christmas break due to the weather and believe me as a teacher, we look forward to the break every bit as much as the students. It was a quiet and peaceful evening of working, actually playing with my coin collections. (I say playing because to say working might imply that it is a joyless task.) And yet, there was not a coin in sight.
