  1. Looks like PMD from contact with a gear or something along that line.
  2. These are an interesting item, here is a link to a thread ATS that will give you some info on the use and design and there are some other links in that thread for additional info also. Martha Washington test coins
  3. Every minute you spend is wasted time, now its your time so its your decision on how to spend it. But I am in complete agreement that what you have is nothing more than a dateless wheatback coin that has no chance of you ever proving your claim.
  4. Yes I saw your post and am happy that you understand the concerns that have been voiced about your recommendations, and if you recall I was the first person to call you out on this. Also you are free to chose any service you want but it seems that your decision to not use NGC is formed around the concept that by not using NGC's services you are somehow punishing the people that have posted. No one that has posted to this thread (or the other thread) works for or represents NGC so if you think that using another TPG is hurting anyone but yourself you are incorrect. And (please correct me if I am wrong here) as I am a member here and ATS I seem to recall a thread over there where you were similarly admonished by members for giving the same advice there, so does that mean that you are also not going to use PCGS to grade your coins? And to be very fair I don't believe I have said your spending monies in the fashion you choose is reckless, that is not my decision to make. What I did say is that advising others who many not understand your motivations is foolish and reckless because it could be a poor use of someone's coin funds. I do not wish you to leave but again that is not my decision, but if that is your choice I wish you well on your journey.
  5. Dont worry about it, some points must be made so harm is not done. The answer is yes there are two which you can find for yourself on Variety Vista. Variety Vista
  6. It is unfortunate that you don't realize just how wrong your statement is. On ebay right this minute I can buy via buy it now auctions two PCGS 1973-S PR68 dimes for $6.99 each and several DCAM's for under $10. There is no way you got your dime certified by any legitimate TPG for less than anyone could buy one for. I am not saying that you cannot or should not submit any coin you want, but examples like this are why you have been told your advice to new collectors to slab everything is reckless and foolish.
  7. Welcome to the forum, it sounds like your dad was a very organized guy so maybe he has a record of what he had and even what he might have payed for each coin. Many collectors (myself included) use a spreadsheet like excel or a simple handwritten ledger to keep track of this info. You might want to do some looking for something like this which might help you with a starting point. We will be happy to help as much as we can if you can post a list of dates and grades with some photos so we have something to go on, you already mentioned it but be prepared for the simple truth that not all old coins are worth high values. Another great reference is the Red Book which you might be able to find at your local library, the pricing in this reference (keep in mind the prices are just a guide) will help assist you in determining which coins have more value than others as you sort thru things. Another possibility is to find a local coin store and see if they are willing to review and offer an assessment of your inheritance. One warning, coin shops buy at steep discounts from retail prices so if possible I suggest you do your homework first before you attempt to visit a shop or accept an offer. Best of luck with your new coin collection.
  8. Hello, I would like to see a few new sets for the Memorial Lincolns and Shield Lincolns. Currently there is only the 59-08 circulation coins including varieties, I would like to see a circulation set not including varieties. Also there is a 2010-current circulation coins including varieties and I would like to see a 2010-current circulation coins not including varieties. Same with 59-current, there is a set including varieties and I would like to see a set not including varieties. It would also be nice to see the date sets of the above also without varieties. Thank you Coinbuf
  9. Thanks, no proofs as this is a registry mint set. To be honest I really am not a fan of proofs and many of the early years are crazy expensive.
  10. I have tried the cross over game a few times in the past but for the most part I see it as a waste of money. Each service grades slightly differently and there for sure is a slab bias (imo) when attempting crossovers between PCGS/NGC each way. My most recent experience was horrible, sent in 6 PCGS coins to NGC (all MS67) and all failed, now I know two were iffy but the other four were very solid and two even had green beans. I only did that submission because I wanted them for a couple of registry sets, I was pretty pissed with the results and then to add insult just one month later came the announcement letting PCGS coins back in, talk about going postal.
  11. I would say that does look like a lamination that is missing the lamination piece.
  12. I'm not an Ike collector but the proof issues were 40% so how this came up as 90% is a mystery.
  13. Thanks everyone, this was my favorite of the three I did, I may still tweak it slightly to fit the available photo space better. I still spend most of my time accessing the registry from the old Collector's Society page also mostly because the new system doesn't support all the information the old did including the purchase and sell information. The new system does have some enhanced viewing options such as the ability to add a cover photo and the coin photo upload is easier in the new.
  14. I put this photo collage together for my 1940 year set, that is the year my mother was born. What are your thoughts? In case your are wondering the large negative space in the upper right corner is where the rank flag goes
  15. Well eye candy is a very subjective criteria, but I like these very much.
  16. A great idea, lets hope that @Ali E., @DWLange, are reading this and can get it done.
  17. Interesting coin and discussion, I do not have an further info that what Greenstang was able to find. It seems to be an oddity and debunked variety, Might be worth putting into a 2X2 and holding on to in case this gets revisited and changed in the future.
  18. The half shows some clear splits on the serfs so I would say that is a DDO however I did not attempt to match it up on Variety Vista. If there are no known DDO's for that date in the Washington quarter series then I do not think the TPG's will recognize or slab it as a DDO. It does look like a possible DDO from your photos (with some strike doubling also) but in order to get it in a slab with the DDO on the label you are going to have to have it verified and authenticated as a DDO first. If you are successful in doing so you would be able to have is slabbed as the discovery piece.
  19. I cannot see any evidence of the G having taken a hit in this photo. At this close I would expect to see metal "piled up" somewhere after being moved from the hit and I'm not seeing that.
  20. Hello, do you have any local coin dealer stores in your area? I would suggest that you find one that is close to you if possible and have them look thru what you have and give you an offer.
  21. Yep I do think you have found a DDO-007, not very valuable in that condition but a nice find, congrats.
  22. Can you provide a close up of the date, I think you have DDO 007.
