  1. Just one thing to note on the lighting as presented in @brg5658's op. The Jansjo lights are no longer available from Ikea, those have been phased out and there is a new light they carry that is similar but not exactly the same. Do they, yes in some cases that is correct, however it is not necessary to take out a new mortgage to get a very good coin imaging system. Simple and effective
  2. If your using a point and shoot or cell phone to take photos you can get away with some slight tipping, but most modern DSLR cameras and macro lens setups will not like that at all.
  3. I have purchased a couple of coins from Rick, I should get to his shop someday as its only a two hour drive.
  4. The second 1976 quarter does not match up to either of the two known DDO's for this date/mm, From the photo I only see MD and it does not appear to be a true double die coin, however on my monitor the photo has a lot of glare and an in hand exam might show otherwise. I'm sorry but your photos of the first coin show areas of rub and I would grade that coin as AU. Both coins are worth $.25 is my opinion.
  5. Youtube is a cesspool of misinformation, yes there is true and good information there but those are far out numbered by the garbage. Auctions for true doubled die coins like the 72/72 and 55/55 Lincolns do indeed bring strong money for the right coins. However in the case of both those coins there exists more than just one doubled die variety for the date, in the case of the 72/72 there are seven different doubled die varieties but only one is worth the big money. The other six are usually only worth a few bucks unless in uber high grade condition.
  6. I collect coins and play golf as do many collectors in AZ, many golfers are 60+ the same demographic as collectors. I don't know how the area coin clubs are doing as I'm not a member.
  7. The issue you have is not being able to distinguish between a true doubled die coin and MD, the coin posted in the op is clearly MD. And who uses magazines in this digital age?
  8. Yes I forced my backyard on me. I hate humidity so the south and east are out. I cannot deal with the politics of the left so west coast is out. I don't like to live in snow and ice so the north is out, (plus many have the politics issue too). I don't like island fever so HI is out. That leaves AZ, yea its hot but I have a swimming pool. As to volunteers the Phx Thunderbirds have no problem hosting the Phx Open (now the Waste Management Open) utilizing thousands of volunteers.
  9. I am looking forward to this show, finally a show in my backyard.
  10. I do not see any doubling of any kind, what I do see is die deterioration resulting in some mushy lettering on a coin with numinous cuts and abrasions. Value $.01, spend it.
  11. In todays polar opposite world everyone knows the meaning of conservative and liberal. The question is can each individual remove his/her bias when applying and using the words, only then can a universal consensus be achieved and the terms used in a constructive way.
  12. Because there are no industry standards grading can (and is) liberal one day and conservative the next depending on many factors like mood swings, perception, does the coin have blue tone, is it Monday, and so on. As noted most of this only matters in the uber high MS grades where price and grade are now meshed into one.
  13. NGC gave it MS62FB, lets just say I found that to be conservative.
  14. Toning is given far too much weight in todays market imo, however I'm not sure that changing or adding a qualifier is the right way to go. Markets change, once white and red was king, now color is the rage, tomorrow will be who knows what. I say grade the coin by technical merits and let the market decide the price.
  15. As far as I know that is correct you just use the cert number and you can access and view the TV with that on the PCGS homepage. As to silly, well I have heard many silly things on forums before, as I mentioned I cannot say for certain if that was just pandering to the host over there or a real stance by those members. And to clarify I am referring to the TV and Photo Vision photos, PCGS does not take stock photos like NGC does.
  16. An interesting side note, a handful of members ATS have publicly taken the stance that they will not buy a PCGS coin unless it has a TV. I actually doubt the validity of this position by those who have pontificated this stance, but it makes me wonder if there are buyers on the net that are swayed by an official NGC or PCGS photo.
  17. ITs just too early to say at this point in time, far too many what-if's that can happen in the coming month or two. If there is a large spike in cases throughout FL, new local or federal restrictions, even the outcome of the election could have an influence. For those that have plans simply be prepared to adjust if needed and if the show is a go I hope all that go have a fantastic show on both sides of the table.
  18. Actually I think the small shows have the easiest time getting back, LB is an expensive show to put on and needs a significant dealer showing to be viable. I'm not saying that won't happen in fact I suspect it will but a year off can change things.
