Hello my name is Harvey, I'm one too!

In a way, it's my parents fault! When I was a kid in rural southern Maryland, a coin show would be held in our town's public library. THEY TOOK ME THERE! I bought my first coin. Others soon followed, then I became a teenager and the coin addiction went into remission. Then I found the devils, eBay and slabs. Almost 2 years later, I've purchsed a couple hundred slabs (not all eBay!). I,(un)fortunately, don't have a wife to help me stop. Then I ask myself, "Why stop?", then I say to myself,

Alas! there IS help for you troubled collectors....

... and I, The Great One (I am a legend in my own mind) am here to help you. Yes, my dear friends. I understand your pain. I understand your dillemna. I know the anxiety you feel when you spy that beautiful coin that harkens to join your collection. I know the disapproving eye given by your spouse as you sign on to Paypal and send payment for that coin you won on ebay this morning. I know the agony of having an empty spot in your coin set. I know... I FEEL the pain. Yes, my dear friends, I c

Hello, my name is Michael and I am also a Numism-addict!

I started out about 20 years ago on the cheap stuff, a penny bag here and a penny bag there... I would scrounge up every bit of money I could find and hit the flea markets to find that next fantasy raw coin. I stayed an occassional "user" for about 18 years. Then the addiction hit full force - I found eBay. Just like the rest of us, I went straight for the hard stuff, for me anyway. You see, I collect small cents, mainly Lincoln Proofs, but am now beginning to spread my wings into other a

Hello, my name is Clay and I TOO am a numismanic!

I started about two years ago! I had been collecting small amounts of coins for years on and off, until about two years ago. Then I too found the hard stuff (slabs). If that wasn't bad enough I found pedigree coins! Now I haven't found a pedigree I didn't have to have, help! Then about a year ago I sold one of my pedigree coins to a great guy, and he told me he was hoping to pass me on the morgan dollar registry soon! Then I was hooked, I wasn't going to let someone pass me, but they are.

My name is Michael, and i'm a numismaniac

It has been one 3 days since i've bought a coin... i split my addictions between commems, both early and mod, and sudoku. needless to say, the sudoku is cheaper, but the coins are prettier. i'm even getting addicted to these journals and chat boards. i need a life (oh yeah, i have one, it's that thing i don't do because i'm checking to see when ngc will finally grade my mods so i can add them to my registry). i tried quitting cold turkey--i sold all my seated dimes (about 130 of them) an

Hi my name is Dean, and I'm a numismatistic

I've been an addict for over 40 years we need to start an NA...numismatists annonymous...just think of all those lost souls like us out there with no support group or apparatus to help them thru those many momments of weakness. Just think of all the coins that will be bought in momments of need or desire, and then the hours of joyous high as they gaze upon the lovelyness of that aquisition. help !!!!!

My 20th Century Type Set

Signature Series -- What a great idea! I have lamented in the past about the inflexibility of the competitive registry -- namely, I can't afford to buy the gold coins needed to complete the 20th century set! A wise member recommended that I create my own set using the Signature Series utility. What a great idea! It's a LOT easier to keep track of the set I'm trying to build, and I get a great sense of satisfaction from it. I borrowed the basic format from another set -- I've forgotton the name

Toning or Corrosion

Coloration on some silver proof quarters... I'm finding some of my Silver Quarter proofs some orange/brown coloration showing. Is this the coin getting toned or am I seeing the beginnings of corrosion? I was thinking of sending them in for slabbing but I don't know if I want to pay $12.50 for NGC to tell me that it's a no-grade...

What a cool place this is

My first impressions of this web site I have been a member of this registry for about a week now. What fun it has been to enter my coins into various collections and compare my scores to more established collectors. As I typed in all the numbers, and some more than once , I realized how scattered my collecting had become. In retrospect, I seem to go on binges where I am pursuing a certain type of coin and then I cool off and chase after another. The process of choosing which registry fit the c

re: Toning or Corrosion

my 25c worth what i've heard, and my experience with mod proofs seems to support this, is that the mint's casing can cause the toning (which, is a form of corrosion, insomuch as it is a chemical reaction between the silver, or whatever else, and the outside world, ultimately changing the coin). now, when i've sent my coins with mint-bequeathed toning, they have all been graded (one even ended up with a PCGS 70). thus, at least without seeing them, this is what i can tell you.

re: What happened to my Posts

i agree with the overlords... while i like the idea of trading slabs, and have been designated a "founding member," i do agree with ngc's position that it should not be in the journal. unfortunately, it would set a precedent that would make this spam central, and many of us readers and posters would groan. if we want more ads, we can read coin word or google coins. i think trading slabs is a super site and word of it will spread quickly to the far reaches of numis-world. i wish their w

Collectors' Journals... the purpose... the dilema...

Ronday raises a good point and one I've thought quite a bit about myself. The Collectors' Journals were originally conceived with a pretty straight forward purpose; to allow collectors a place to post their thoughts about and experiences with collecting in close proximity to their registry sets. The vision was that you might visit the home page of a user and be able to get a very personal sense of what they're collecting and why in a more general philosophical way than just commetns on coins a

The road to completion

Gifts from NGC? As I look at and admire some of the top Morgan Dollar sets, I can only imagine what kind of outlay was necessary to accumulate so many pristine examples of George Morgan?s legacy. I?m just a typical working stiff who has enjoyed coins, especially Morgans, for more decades than I care to remember. I had completed a set of ?raw? business strike Morgans and decided that my next logical step was to leap into a registered set. There?s a reason that my Morgan registry set

Updated my 1866 registry with a few photos and coins, will be adding more photos in the next month.

I have been building this set for 19 years. I just recently got back into focusing on it, with in the last year. I am now going to be upgrading and adding. I found this forum where I could share with others, what has been a life long project. My goal is nothing less then an xf 45 gold coin or better. As far as the rest, mostly MS, with the occasional AU. I originally wanted nothing less the AU coins, but this will be financially impossible. The price jumps are horrendous in the gold. from xf45

Re: Pulled Entry

Thank you for the explanation. While this is on the public forum, I direct this response to Island Antiques. I do not in any way pretend to speak for our collecting community. I am just sharing my opinion and those who MAY think like me. I, like many of us fellow collectors have had a bad experience with one or even more of the third party graders. Personally, I will never send any more of my coins to PCGS, for my own reasons. That is not to say I dont like PCGS coins, as I have several in m

I pulled the entry.....

Venting was my option and NGC had NO PART in it...... Although I stand behind my words I see no reason for any futher contact. Trust is an earned and very objective thing to extend on any level. It is my option alone to decide if I wish to continue a relationship with NGC. My personal opinion is that NGC is being over run with submisions, hence the extended turn around. NGC is in the service industry and like everyone else I demand service for my hard earned. I did not intend to shake t

VISION III

Beginning to see our coinage as links to the world. As my collecting continued, I gradually began to appreciate that our coins carry a significance greater than serving as a medium of exchange. They were "markers" of history- a reflection of what was happening at any point in time with our nation and our world as a whole. For example, a great number of our "errors" such as overdates seem to occur at times of world crisis, like wars. Low mintages, and even lack of mintage at all in the 1930's

"Magic"?

Disappearing journal Is David Copperfield somehow affiliated with this site? Can someone make journal entries disappear? Island Antiques made an entry claiming that he (or she) received the incorrect coins back from grading at NGC and stated that he (or she) was finished with this site and NGC. That journal entry has vaporized. If, in fact, NGC screwed up that badly, I am rather uncomfortable. I have coins in for grading at this time. If Island Antiques was wrong, I will not worry.

Thank you Clay

Great tip! By golly, you can teach an old dog new tricks. Clay mentioned that we can, indeed, delete out own journal entries. I followed his directions and by golly he was right. Many thanks for that tip. As for Island Antiques, seeings how the rest of his journals are intact, we can hope that he has had a positive contact with NGC and they will come to a mutally beneficial agreement. This is a great hobby and we as a family do not want to see hard feelings. Respectfully Michael Cooper

re: "MAGIC"

Yes you can! You can delete your Journal entry! Just go to your journal entry, click on EDIT, at the bottom click delete! I too wondered what happen to that entry. When I've had a problem with NGC, I just contact them and they fix it.
