  1. Capricious seems rather over the top don't you think. Regardless of what you or I think NGC is free to run their business in the way they feel is best. It sounds like from the explanation given by Mr. Lange that it was reviewed and the decision was made to not include it based on the information about this variety in MS. Certainly you are free to check around and have the coin encapsulated by another TPG if there is one that recognizes this variety.
  2. A modern zincoln, with the usual plating pimples.
  3. Too far for me, hope the show is good for you.
  4. I am in the AU camp on the $5 gold indian as well, and while I'm no expert on the counterfeit tells on these nothing is jumping out at me from the photos. If you do end up sending in both of these please do come back and update this thread with your results, it is always educational to see the results.
  5. I do not think this is a coin I would submit, that right obv field has a very strange look to it. I think there is a good chance of a details grade vs a straight grade.
  6. Well how about showing us these "ruined" coins, my bet is that what you have is far from ruined to most collectors. And as for "What can I do", perhaps you could use that magic elixir you have touted as able to cure a coin's toning issues but is safer than the dip jar according to you. If you really think the coins you own are truly ruined then cracking them out and dipping them will not have any substantial impact, correct?
  7. Photo is too blurry and out of focus for me to tell anything.
  8. We certainly would like to see the coin if you have some photos to post, we like to look at coins. I would not be too concerned, if NGC feels that the coin needs to be bumped up to the next tier they will do so and then charge you the extra. But you would usually need to be way off, like sending what is obviously a $1k coin under the econ tier. And welcome to the forum.
  9. Actually the letter is just as good, however I would do the same just for the ego rush.
  10. Congrats, and thanks for updating us with the information.
  11. Glad you made it home safe, I too am out of the loop as I heard nothing about any airline issues.
  12. I also agree with a misaligned die, commonly referred to as MAD.
  13. I stopped buying from the mint years ago, as such I never even started an ASE collection. I'm a happier person for it.
  14. From your photos I agree with @Woods020 your coin is suffering from die deterioration doubling not the known DDO for this date. If you feel differently then the best course is for you to post this on the CONECA forum and see what replies you get. Unless this is recognized as a new variety the coin is too far gone to be worth submitting, however I would very much suggest that you soak this coin in acetone to remove the PVC and gunk. Regardless of what you find out or ultimately do with the coin, getting that stuff off the coin is the right thing to do for it.
  15. I'm sorry to inform you that you are not correct again. Here is another from my collection, this is ANACS gen 4 used from 91 to 96 after Amos Press bought ANACS in 1990ish. Once again this coin has some slight edge tone but far from destroyed, I took this photo about a year ago. You just cannot use a broad brush and apply it as you are, I am not doubting that you have noticed some changes to your ANACS holdered coins. What I do not believe for a second is that the holder/label is the single culprit. Unless you yourself bought that coin right off the press, had it hermetically sealed and submitted it yourself to ANACS you have no idea what substances may have been on the coin at the time of slabbing. There are many factors in how coins tone and the holder/label is just a small part of that, you should know better than to spread this type of misinformation as you constantly rail against the misinformation that is so prevalent in numismatics. And I have to ask, if you feel that your coins are being ruined by the ANACS holder why have you not done something about removing those coins for those holders?
  16. I would say that the biggest issue is improper storage not the label. Do you have any ANACS slabs as old as these? Both of these are the first slabs used by ANACS after the photocerts from early 1989 to mid 1990 both in my collection. Is there some tone, yes with the 1879 having the most of the two, however I would not say that either of these are ruined. Does the label have an effect, yes, but far more important is the storage methods that the collectors and dealers use for coins. Coins stored properly will not be ruined by the holder or label, coins stored in a way to induce toning from the label may be ruined.
  17. Welcome to the forum, the coin has all the proper diagnostics and none of the known diagnostics for a struck counterfeit, it looks to be genuine SVDB. Here is a photo showing all four obverse dies and how the mintmark lines up for each one. I think it was @JKK who mentioned die #4, from your photo the mm looks to be closer to die pair #2 to my eye. I would grade the coin as MS62 without the obv scratch, however I think that scratch would result in a details grade and is the most likely reason this coin is raw. The carbon spot on the rev is unfortunate and rather unsightly and part of my reason for my grade of MS62 as without the spot and scratch it has the details be a solid MS64+, the luster is muted and the other reason for my grade. Keep in mind that my grade assessment is biased only on the photo and an in hand exam might yield a different grade opinion. From a personal standpoint my eye is immediately drawn to that carbon spot on the rev, and something like that if it bothers you now it will always bother you. As such my recommendation is to keep looking, 09 SVDB's are not rare at all and with some patience you will be able to find a nicer example for this money level.
  18. Welcome to the forum, I'm inclined to agree with @Oldhoopster you most likely have a dryer coin. However, your photo is too blurry to really say for sure.
  19. Lem is correct, sample slabs were used by both major TPG's as handouts at major shows or events. They still do but less often than in the past. There is a niche group of collectors that like to collect these sample slabs and some are somewhat rare.
  20. Are the dimensions correct compared to other dollars? That seems like too much weight difference to be within tolerance, but I do not know the mint weight specs for this coin.
  21. Just damage, looking at clouds in the sky can yield lots of interesting images, but its all just in our imagination just like your second face on this coin is just wishful thinking.
  22. Beautiful proof 3cn @The Neophyte Numismatist Sweet silver Ike @Lem E does the year 1974 have a special significance for you? Wonderful old classic head gold coin @jtryka Great eye candy as usual everyone.
