  1. I am not aware of any way to search or identify coins in that way, maybe someone else is.
  2. Some copper has been the exception to this rule, half and large cents while still in demand have taken a side seat in the current market rush. Silver and gold coins, especially large silver and gold coins are front and center, at least that is my take on the market currently. Edited to add: While it is true that we hear a fair amount of groaning and moaning about dealers that complain they cannot get inventory, at the same time every show report I read is loaded with accounts of collectors buying multiple 5 figure coins. That begs the question, if material really is that difficult to obtain what are these collectors buying at these shows for such large sums of money.
  3. Just semantics, whether the submitter or NGC cracks the coin the result is the same, the coin must be raw for grading and the PCI holder and grade is lost forever.
  4. I figured that there was more to the story than the op was telling.
  5. Sure there are some cheap fares to LA, cheaper than driving. But (there is always a but) then you have to factor in the cost of taxi or uber or rental car, the last time we flew to Denver to visit our daughter the round trip airfare for the two of us combined was much cheaper than the cost to rent a car for the three days we were there. You have to factor in all the costs not just one.
  6. That is about the distance I have to drive to get to the Long Beach show, the only show that is even remotely close enough to consider and one that I have been to many times before all the protocol nonsense. But now it would be at least $300 in fuel round trip plus any food, and lodging; $500 minimum just to cover the trip cost so why bother. And it would be double that to hit any other show, in reality all the east coast shows have always been a non starter due to the cost of travel alone not to mention the time required away from my business.
  7. Yep a touch of bondo and some minor welding and that will be good as new. I went to just one dealer's website and he has two undamaged 1942-O seated dimes one listed as a Good for $50 and a VG for $75. How you spend your money is your business, but as you have asked for opinions I think you made a very poor decision to buy this damaged coin.
  8. Not going, I have not and would never spend the money to go to a show I could not drive to, I would have nothing left to spend. And now with the price of fuel I would not even drive to a show.
  9. The mark on the "L" and the mark in the field under the "L" appear to be just dings from another coin or object. The small bit of metal that is part of the rim that is pushed ever so slightly away from the rim may be a VERY tiny and insignificant cud. As a side note I suggest that you lose the microscope, using that will have you going nuts over the most insignificant and useless stuff. As I always say, everything looks like something at the micron level.
  10. Yes any member can respond to your journal either with a post to the journal or with the like/emoji button, no different than a normal thread. You can always try one way and if you decide you are not getting as much participation you can always switch to another way of posting. Just a side note, this forum has a small number of regular participants so don't get discouraged if you do not see replies quickly to a thread or a journal entry.
  11. There is no hard and fast rule, but its sort of an unwritten one that this thread is for new purchases vs coins found. Most people post change/detector/coinstar finds as a separate thread in the appropriate section. With that said, you would not be banned for posting them here, the mods here are not that touchy like some other forums, it just might not be well received by all the members. Another way you could share your finds is with journal entries, would make for really nice ongoing journal.
  12. Just some damage acquired from the coin's time in circulation, not an error.
  13. If you are asking about all the scratches around the date, it's just that scratches from a sharp instrument like a knife or screwdriver. This is damage that happened after the coin left the mint and is known as post mint damage (PMD).
  14. This might be VAM-4, can you get a close up of the R in "TRVST".
  15. A very nice off center struck coin, looks to be about 20% off center. Yes that is one that could benefit from being certified as a genuine mint error.
  16. Welcome to NGC and the forum, I will just second much of what has been said above. The first thing that struck me when looking at the photo is the flat dull look, like the coin has been dipped to death or the luster was stripped. Also, the toning does not look natural or have a natural progression or pattern to it. Having said that I have seen coins from the seated series that have colors and patterns that are similar to your coin. Photos only get you so far and this coin would need to be rotated under a strong single light source to see if there is any true luster movement under the tone. In answer to your questions I also do not think that restoration is going to have any effect, and I'm not at all convinced that NCS would do any form of restoration biased on what I see in the photos. And given the long wait time, costs, and high likelihood that NGC would also place the coin into a details holder I do not think that sending to NGC/NCS is a very good option. But I have to admit that if this were my coin I would be tempted to go for that second opinion at NGC. The really sad thing is that if this is sold into the market I think there is a strong possibility that it will surface as a raw coin with a big asking price on a venue like ebay or etsy with no mention of any issues. Totally unrelated to your post I am curious if you have ever consigned coins to Gerry Fortin, I review his inventory often and have seen a number of coins that are noted as from a collection with a very similar name as your screen name.
  17. As northeast is a dealer I do not expect that they are likely to pay you more that you can sell for at auction, either ebay or GC. The only exception would be for very rare or highly desired coins, but even then I would be surprised if they would offer more than what such items would fetch in auction. I personally have never had a dealer offer me more than I could sell it for through some auction venue, GC is very reasonable and if the coin sells for over 1K there are no seller fees.
  18. The early Lincoln years are so nice, the dies were new and the details just pop.
