  1. Thanks for all the great responses! Here is an enlargement of the S on the reverse. I think it more clearly shows manipulation.
  2. I agree that the top of the S seems off. Thing is, it's clearly not been added and seems more like it might have a ding on the S. It does have the appearance of having been cleaned perhaps, but even under magnification, it appears to be a genuine S mint mark. I feel like it might deserve a details grade but I don't know enough about altered mint marks to be confident....
  3. In the process of learning how to spot altered coins, I sent this in to NGC - it came back body bagged for an altered mint mark. Based on these photos, can anyone tell me what I should have been looking for to identify the altered mint mark? Is there a difference between a damaged mint mark and an altered mint mark?
  4. Here's NGC photos of the coin. I now realize the importance of good photos! Graded AU58
  5. Thanks for taking a look and pointing out the PVC. The coin just just got graded by NGC. I'm interested in a value and how to honestly sell this coin as well as knowing how collectors evaluate a coin that has been slabbed and graded cleaned UNC:Details
  6. I thought it might be interesting to see some educated comments on the condition and saleability of this 1921d Graded cleaned UNC details
  7. Thanks for the education! I think @woods020 is spot on - the DDO describes doubling that I don't see on the coin.
  8. Thanks for checking the references. I'm struggling to get good clear high res shots of the entire coin, although I can get reasonable close ups. Time to invest in a good system for taking photos of coins. Here is a shot of the date showing faint doubling. I've only looked at the reference in the Variety Plus section of the NGC website - I'm guessing Coneca is the place to go for actual ID....
  9. When checking for varieties I came across this 1926 10c VP-001 variety which has a double struck R on the obverse. Sadly this coin suffers from some type corrosion - likely from bad cleaning. Seems to be a rare find. Worth conservation?
  10. It may be my LED lighting although I think your intuition is probably good. It wouldn't surprise me if these coins had been cleaned back in the '70's. The entire set of 50+ coins has a bright finish with little variation between coins. Is there a particular part of the coin the would be helpful to see? Here is the '41/42 again in possibly better lighting and a bit more in focus. The more I look at this, the more I feel like it may be counterfeit.....but I'm a complete novice at this..
  11. Thanks for the Coinbuf - I'm new at this and quite nervous about sending these coins off in the mail. Here is a shot of the 1921D....
  12. It is part of a collection my father had. He collected thru about 1979 and was an experienced collector. There is also a 1921D and a 1926S in the collection that seem to be in MSFB condition. He told me he had a 1916D that he managed to loose and was upset to the point where he stopped collecting mercs.
  13. Hopefully these photos are good enough to provide an answer to the question, What tier should this coin be sent in as for grading?
  14. I've got a coin from a collection I inherited. I don't really know how this coin should be valued - somewhere between $1,500 and $10,000+. I want to get it graded, which tier should I select?
