Hey guys.... Been off the forum for a few weeks now, but hopefully I'll be back on more frequently now.  Wasn't sure where to post this one so I'll start here for some much needed advice regarding grade.  I don't own it "yet" but I'm seriously contemplating it IF it is not a proof which I'm on the fence about it being.  If it is a proof then completely disregard anything else in this post and just tell me it's a proof, end of story and my decision is made. My honest thoughts are that it is in too good of condition NOT to be a proof.

I've done some research on this year and mint Jefferson with FS which this one has.  Even low MS examples seem to be pretty dang pricey, as well as AU's too, once again "IF" it's not a proof which I wouldn't consider purchasing.  To me, (which I'm probably wrong) I am seeing this one as MS condition, possibly even in the mid to high side.  Aside from one mark under the jawline, I am not seeing anything else distracting on this one.  These are all the pics I have at the moment but should be able to get more if needed. Nickels drive me nuts when it comes to grades.  Lincolns, IMO, are a different breed and much easier for me to assign a close grade to when raw. If I am way off base here on thinking this is MS, then by all means correct me (which I know you will, ain't got to worry about that which I actually like.... haha) Thanks for any comments on this one.

    I agree. Proof.

So I have wanted a coin of this type for quite a while now, not a priority but one that I really did want.   I find the no star seated dime design to be so clean, uncluttered, and simple, just an elegant presentation of the design.   I was able to aquire this piece from a PCGS forum member on the BST ats, I think this is a very wholesome, unmolested coin with some a very original look to her.   In addition this was the first year of operation for the New Orleans mint, which adds that little bit extra coolness factor for me.  So here she is, an 1838 - O no stars seated dime, PCGS XF45.  Photos courtesy of the seller, a bit lighter in hand then the photos suggest with a touch more color.

Good looking coin CB. Nice and clean with original skin. I like the tone on it. Congrats.

  3. What I usually do is use a coffee cup or as Bob suggested a stack of books or something to give a little distance between the phone and the coin to let a little light in. You may have to adjust your set up a little depending on your light source. Zoom in on the coin to where it fills most of the screen and click. Just make sure the phone is stable on the cup or books to where there is no shake when you hit the button. Then you can go into edit and finish crop. Just play around with it and you will get the hang of it.

  4. I acquired a coin recently, and upon further inspection I noticed that a spot on the coin that I thought was carbon turned out to be what I think is a small detached lamination. My question is should this coin have graded as high as it did? Should a lamination or planchet flaw bring the grade down? I am going to supply pictures of the coin and some close ups of the spot. Any comments or advice is welcome, and thanks in advance. The spot in question is on the obverse of the coin on the cheekbone. If you think this is something other than a lamination, please comment.B07C7913-1C12-43F9-9A05-6BC76CED6055.jpeg.a7ee49a98c64dde384d21571a04f1875.jpeg07021618-3AB0-4970-8625-28F933C71E34.thumb.jpeg.8d38f87e6d301099a87e62454d879fc2.jpeg982A0491-9F39-4074-A7DA-050520FB8823.thumb.jpeg.eac5b5f57e4097e6ed392eb47fc98d6a.jpeg345F5D3B-0103-4F1F-AFDB-6D9B74203804.thumb.jpeg.f195ee321f5828de52cbf60abbd65e54.jpeg

These are pictures taken with my phone through a regular microscope of the spot. I hope they are sufficient enough. Wow you guys are good.  It so hard for me to see yet understand what to what am I looking at.  For example I can’t tell if this would considered a type 1 type 2 SBA. My phones stinks at pics. I will look for a cheap microscope on Amazon and get a few books. Wish I had them now for pending snow blizzard here in NH.

    This may help you.

  6. These coins have the edge lettering that can be both ways. This is a result of the minting process. The coins are struck, ejected into a bin, and then they will go through an edge incusing machine that creates the edge lettering. Depending on how the coin enters the edge machine determines the position of the lettering. TPGs will refer to this as position A and B. (I’m not sure which is which.) This is on business strikes. The proofs are done a little differently and should all be the same with the lettering towards the obverse.

  7. I was watching this coin auction hoping to get it for under the BIN price of the same coin from the same seller. They actually have 3 or 4 of these at the BIN of $286. So I am about to place a bid, and the price jumps up to this. I just don’t get it. I’ll bet the seller is laughing all the way to the bank.

Sorry to hear about your son and the exposure to you and your family Hog, best wishes for a quick recovery.   @Hoghead515 and @Lem E,if you guys are not able to find those quarters you both need give me a PM.  I put back a roll of every state and park quarter.  These are mostly Denver mint quarters as I seldom see the philly quarters out here.  These were pulled from circulation when they were released so no super gems, but most are solid BU or at least BU ish.   I have no idea why I bothered to save all these I know these will never be valuable per se, I'll just blame it on my OCD.  lol

Thanks @Coinbuf for the offer. It is greatly appreciated my friend. I’m one of those types that likes the thrill of the hunt. All of my album coins have been found in change. Just something about sifting through my change and the feeling when you find something you don’t have. Guess I like to do things the hard way. I just finished my state quarter collection last year with a 2004 Iowa P. Only took me 22 years to complete it. xD Once again, thanks for the offer.
