New to the Journal

Another round of grading... My guess is that all of us have gone through the pains of body bagged coins and learned what the technical terms are for altered coins the hard way. I know I have paid for many grades that were not to be in the past few years. Fortunately, I cut my teeth on some other grading services and now I hopefully have a little more discerning eye. Well time will tell, as I've sent my first submission of 5 coins to NGC. I'm a Lincoln fanatic, so all 5 were MS lincolns. H

Trapped in the incomplete

Nothing can get finished... Lately I'm feeling kinda trapped by my collecting projects. I have started large sets that I want to build and while they're great for long-term goals, it doesn't give much gratification to fill one more hole in a sea of holes in a set. I'm currently pursuing the following: Lincoln Cents [MS66-68RD](250+ coins) Statehood Quarters [MS67-68] (~180 coins) Presidential Business Strikes [MS65-66FD] (80 coins, 8 more years) Presidential Proofs [MS69UC] (40 coins,

What a relief. My Mom's Lincoln got a grade

Was really afraid that it would come back as NO GRADE. For those who may be new to this particular thread, my Mom is fighting Cancer right now, and I thought that for her birthday in July, that I would get the first coin in my collection graded. She bought it for me on my 11th birthday back in 1971. It is a 1909 VDB Lincoln. It didn't grade very high, only an XF-45 BN, but that doesn't matter. What was more important to me is that it made it into a holder so that she can put it in her curio ca

Collection SAFEty...

New safe ! Not bad.. checking it for size, looks like another 4x as many slabs again can go in - 20% full ! plus there is a pull out tray at the top.. currently has my 2 multi holders in it I do like the NGC coins boxes.. but the door just doesn't quite shut if I try putting the boxes in length ways, and they dont quite fit sideways ! BUGGER.. Might even swap it for another one, but the stack of NGC holders can hold cheap coins. The rest of the babies are safe away...

GSA Morgans

Original packaging please! In response to Bully's musings, I would like to add my silver dollar. I prefer my CC Morgans in the original GSA package for the sake of authenticity and their historical value. I refuse to buy PCGS graded GSAs simply because they break them out of their original package. I have requested that NGC make a plastic storage box, much like their multi-holder box, that would hold 10 or better yet 11 (so an entire set would fit in 1 box) GSA original slabs, so far to no

Is it REALLY Just "Stuff" ?

The things we have and losing it all..... Greetings! I sit here with the memory of going through my divorce 7 years ago and having the attitude that I did not need the "stuff" I acquired over the time of the marriage anyway. I felt I did not need the comic book collection, the baseball cards ( the good autographed ones were sold previous to this...a long story) the "things" that I treasured, I figured I would "just re-build later". It turns out I was sorely wrong. I miss the "stuff"

I'm curious about Ikes

Which kind of NGC grade/packaging do people prefer Someone recently posted a journal entry about an Ike that graded well, and it was encased in the original OGP (presumably one of the "Brown Pack Ikes") with the NGC band around the case to indicate the grade. Side note: I know NGC also does these on the GSA Hoard Morgans. That said, do folks prefer these packages to be graded this way as opposed to the NGC slabs? I would pose the same question about the so-called "Blue Pack Ikes" whic

Back at it.

Well after getting slightly distracted, I am now back at it. I'm refocusing my collecting efforts back towards the coin that originally drew me into this hobby. I picked up a new Morgan for my collection and it is a beauty. I got a 1881 CC MS 65. With all the recent interest in Silver Eagles and my money and time spent in pursuit of other coins, purchasing a new Morgan kinda made me feel like a man returning home to his wife after a torrid affair with another woman. Okay maybe not quite li

I like Van B.

My new 'fav' coin. I saw it in the shop yesterday, and had to have it. The VanBuren dollar coin, hiding in a proof set with some other old blokes. Why? His hair. My wife didn't like the idea of me sending the guys in for grading, something about liking the mints packaging. So... Ebay I go, picking up the bloke in an NGC PF70uc slab for about $35. Statistically, it made sense. Now, being that I don't need him from his cage, the mint package is going into hiding with my wifes quarters, who also

I Like Ike

This bad boy put me in number 7 for Proof Ikes. I received this Ike in todays mail. He replaces a mere Proof 69UC, as this is a Proof 69UC STAR!! I think we could use a 5-Star General today. I cannot afford the thousands of dollars for Proof 70's, so I will settle on getting these 69ucSTAR's whenever I can find them. Hope you all have a great Memorial Day and remember the reason for this season. Respectfully, Michael Cooper oh...p.s. The coin itself is in the mint OGP with the NGC

Now that I'm seasoned...

I've been collecting just early commemoratives now for quite some time. Now since I've been collecting early commemoratives have I done the right thing? Are there any lessons to be learned? Yes and yes! I'm enjoying the coins so much. They all seem so unique and have an interesting story behind them. I've been out to complete my BTW set and I'm four coins away from realizing that goal. That feels good! Almost as good as rock climbing and you just breezed through the crux of the climb. That a

Faith Renewed

Local coin shop, who would've thought? I was just at my local coin shop and wow I couldn't believe my eyes on the quality of early commemoratives they have. I saw several I wanted and they all were original, non-cleaned/dipped and they were all looking as if they just left the mint! I'm sure I exagerate for effect but I'm telling you they look great. I bought one today, 1936 York and the fort on the coin looks awesome when oscillating the coin it's as if the log fort wall is alive as the shine

1732 8 Reales

Is it real?? Yes, I did change the date. My mistake!! It is a 1732. I found a 1732 8 reales in a bag of coins I bought at a outside market. Besides getting several silver coins , I also found this Mexico coin. I did find some info. in my 2002 coin book. This coin was a first year issue. It will grade VG. It is now the oldest coin in my set. But not much history on it.

I am at a complete loss

Got my 1953 Body-Bagged Franklin back today, and don't see a thing wrong with it. Just went over it with my 10X, and don't see anything wrong at all. It got Body Bagged with a message REV SCRATCHED, but I'll be danged if I see any scratches, rim dings, or anything. It looks fine. Anybody else ever had something similar to this happen? I think that I'm going to call on Tuesday and ask them to explain this in greater detail. I paid for Express Tier grading on the coin; I think I deserve an expla

Silver Eagles still for sale

USMINT.gov It appears that if this article is legit, the sale of Silver Eagles being slowed has to do with the Bullion rolls of the plain SAEs. As of now anyway, both the Uncirculated 2008-W and the Proof 2008-W Silver American Eagle are both listed as AVAILABLE on the web site at www.usmint.gov

The Zombies are coming!!

They want to eat our brains!! Here is the latest commemorative that I got...the 1987 Constitution $1. When I first saw the reverse of this coin, the first thing that popped into my head was that a group of zombies are coming to eat our brains! My picture is not the best. It's much better if you have the coin in hand. Remember...only head shots will bring em down!! I also updated my modern commemorative registry. I put in some pictures for about 20 coins that I added over the last month. An

Goal update

Well, one goal down, new one set! It was just on the 21st where I wrote about my goal to top 300,000 Registry Points reasonably soon. My other goal was to lower my ranking further, making my way down, perhaps even into the top 50 or lower, though I am not exactly sure what that will take, so only time will tell. However, tonight with entering a few more coins, a few Silver American Eagles and a few Commemoratives, my Registry Set score topped 300,000. Just the other day, when I had dropped

COIN COLLECTING JOY

It ain't a sin to make a buck while you have fun is it? You know, I have been collecting coins for 50 years or so and I really love this hobby. I have coins in my collection from the 1800's that were collected and passed down by my grandparents and those are the most prized pieces I own, despite their relative poor condition and some poorly done cleaning done by an inexperienced novice in the '50's (me). That having been said, IF I had been around in 1909, I would have loved to have found a

My latest acquisitions... Greetings!! Well, yesterday I proudly added my 1922 MS63 Peace Dollar to my registry. I think the Peace Dollars are very well deigned and I am proud to have started a small collection of "Peace" here. Also, in Comic Book news, I won a "Batman Year One PT 1" By Frank Miller in auction the other day, rated a 9.6 by CGC with white pages for $19.99......I remember paying 75 cents when it first came out!! I am proud to be owning it though, and to try to recaptu
