If you don't win...don't whine! It takes the fun out of collecting.
Dear Fellow Coin Collectors; I have been reading the various comments both pro and con regarding this year's Registry Awards. I am new to journaling here and also to the chat and message boards so, excuse me if I just jump right in with some of my facts and opinions. My #1 set of Proof Buffalo Nickels won a 'Best Classic Set' award this year and I am both honored and proud for the recognition of my achievement. I am a 100% ser
Trying to forget the last few months...
So, here I am.. a new year with so many new possibilities. I need to work hard to forget the two travesties that threatened to sour my feelings for my beloved hobby of coin collecting.
First was the nonsense with the Mint back in October... not being able to get my 25th Anniversary set, and watching insufficiently_thoughtful_person after insufficiently_thoughtful_person post videos of them opening their 5 sets on YouTube. Getting emails from dealers wi
Sitting back and trying to find the best in the world
I really don't like buying any kind of low grade coins. I set my standards extremely high and do everything in my power to get a certain coin when it comes up for auction. I try to set high goals in my registry collection. This is what I plan to accomplish this year.
I am ranked #92 in total registry points. Goal for
this year is #75
I am #1 in the 1965- present clad roosevelt set and plan to
keep that pace.
I am ranked
A diversity of winners from year to year is good for Collector's Society.
I've given this matter some thought, and from year to year I've noticed certain traits to the sets that are awarded. Naturally, every year there are those dream sets that make most people, including myself, drool over. Even the journal awards seem to follow certain trends. This causes me to conclude, and this is only my opinion, that the judges get together before the contest to determine the criteria by which they will
Learning to use the computer editing program for the Celestron Deluxe handheld digital microscope is amazingly easy with exceptional results.
Even this old U.S. Marine has no problem using this tool of the trade.Below is an image of a more detailed example of the image quality the Celestron Deluxe handheld digital microscope can accomplish (under $60.00 at Amazon.com). It is a 1921 improperly cleaned Morgan. The image shows how the Celetron microscope can, when using the accompanied editi
Well almost save for a minor glitch (I Hope).
Hi All,
Picked up a very nice NGC MS65 Gettysburg Half Dollar today in a straight trade with my local coin dealer. He got a slabbed 09-S VDB and I got the Gettysburg Half. BTW, the 09-S VDB has already been removed from my NGC registry.
I saw this beauty back in December during an earlier trip to the dealership and I couldn't get it out of my mind. It has beautiful blast white surfaces with just a hint of toning along the edge. Those beaut
Congratulations are in order for all this year's award winners.
Congratulations to this year's award winners, but in particular, to three award winners with whom I have conversed with in the past and whom I consider friends within Collectors Society. I am a far better collector for knowing each of the following three persons.
A little over two years ago, because I was impressed with his writing ability, I asked Revenant to evaluate a set I was working on. Thankfully, he was very gracious and
benefits of a CAC sticker on a slab?
couple times i was looking at a coin in auction with a CAC sticker on so i wonder,is there a benefit of having a CAC sticker on a slab? and should it be more expensive?

My 2011 'Best Classic Set' Award For 1913-1937 Proof Buffalo Nickels
Hello, my name is Leonard Raines and I am the current 'custodian' of the #1 'Best of Category' set for 1913-1937 Proof Buffalo Nickels. I am truly honored to receive today one of NGC's 'Best Classic Set' awards. Thank you! I worked hard over several years putting the set together pretty much one coin at a time. I worked within a relatively small budget, too. As a 100%, permanent and total, service-connected disabled veteran
Worked hard and Overlooked
I have be working hard on my coins for the last few years. I was #1 in 2007 for my Roosevelt dimes. Ngc changed the point score in 2008 and I couldnt financially recover in 2008.I kept pace with some of the best. In 2010 I was in 3rd place and Arthur Gowman and Nick Casio bought out the #1 and #2 spot and combined the the set. I Was put in #2 and I always kept up with the desctiptions and tried to make the best pictures. Countless hours of scanning to get the best pi

Added or upgraded the Franklins
Greetings once more everyone. Have enjoyed reading all the journals of late and seeing what some have added to their collections to start the year. Today I received my submissions back to start the new year and would like to share as well. As some of you know I have been concentrating on my Franklin collection the last half of 2011 and will continue into this year. I have upgraded or added 7 Franklins today. The crown jewel of todays additions is the 1957 P
I wanted to put in one of my journals again to let starting/ beginning collectors realize by checking around in Antique Stores, yard and estate sales you may find the coin you have been searching for in your collection.
Head to the Beach, look where people have Lunch along the viewpoints there. Check out the old parks in your city or town. Old school playgrounds is a great place to use a metal detector also. Get out and take a hike in the forests on those wilderness trails, keep an eye open for
There is a lot of comments pertaining to digital microscopes so, I bought one. The experience is great.
I am new at collecting coins and learning that my years of museum work and history research work relates to this newest adventure that I am on.
I purchased a "Celestron" handheld digital microscope, model #44302-A, to refine my curating skills as it would apply to coin collecting. This machine, which I thought would be difficult to opperate, is fantastic.

and slowly chipping away!
Hi fellow Collectors,
I hope everybody enjoyed their Christmas and New Years. My family and I went down to San Francisco to spend Christmas with my brothers. It was the first time in a couple years that all 4 of my brothers and all of the kids my were able to get together. A most enjoyable and fun time! New Years was quiet for myself and my wife. We just stayed home while my girls went out enjoyed themselves. The weather was wonderful and no snow on the ground this
At least a little.
Hi All,
Hope your Holiday Season was wonderful and the trip back to work yesterday was tolerable.
Some of you may recall a journal entry from last year where I mentioned my worst numismatic purchase was a silver ingot poured from a larger ingot from the Nuestra Senora De Atocha. At the time, I offered to sell it for 50 bucks (sort of as a joke although I would have sold if anybody asked). It just sold this past weekend for 200.00 on EbaY.
I had placed it on Ebay
This scarce nickel shows a Mirror-Like look to it!
These 1939-D and 1939-S Reverses are very tough to find with nice full steps.I almost gave up that any were still out there. These coins look just as nice as the 1938 minted coins. However some are seen with an offluster with a weak strike. Finding a nice quality strike like this are rare, and when you add-in the fact it being a Full-Step,gets even Rarer yet!
The Light "Kinda Bounces-back" from the reverse side. A Quality Pure Gem Nickel.
But have been meaning to write this entry for about a month.
Happy New Year everyone. I hope you all had a joyous holiday season with family and friends.
I have been spending my holiday days off either enjoying the season with my family and friends; also by enjoying our wonderful hobby. That's why I've been meaning to write this entry for a month.
For starters, I have been trying to make more meaningful sets, either by tweaking my competitive sets, or by making more meaningful custom sets.
Ok, I came across a 1921 Morgan One Dollar coin in great condition...
EXCEPT, someone has put a hole in the top of the coin as if it were once worn as a necklace piece.
My question is: Is this coin a lost cause? Or since the condition is great might it actually be worth something other then a necklace pendant?

Need some help please!
As a new coin collector, I am hoping that some of you might be able to provide some recommendations for a digital microscope. I am looking for something that will take good photographs of the entire coin as well as something with significant zoom. Thanks to those that respond.

I forced myself to do it.
It's been a long time since I had the time to update all my sets. Now the my brain issue has been taken care of, and other health issues, I'm back and ready to catch up, not just with the Conders but all my sets. I'd been able to purchase about 10 tokens over the last year that never got added to the set. I've added all them now and corrected , mostly spelling, on all the other ones. I still have much more info to add but at least I have them all in with pictures. Fee
