Copper lining?

Sometimes you take what you can get, right? This happened a couple of months ago but I found myself thinking about it. Back in November I lost my Android smartphone. This was an extremely upsetting event and I was very frustrated with myself because I hadn't lost or broken a cellphone in 10 years of owning one. All my old phones were retired when the batteries gave out and I was up for an upgrade. I was ticked with myself for losing it and I knew it was going to cost me a ton of money I didn

Positioning my collection for 2012 markets

Where bullion value and collector value might head in the next 12 months - and how that affects my collection What scares us all, TODAY, about our jobs, our savings, and who might buy our collections when we need to sell? (1) Europe, 2011. (2) Japan, 1989. (3) USA, 2008. (4) China, 2011. HYPERINFLATION? Market participation is quite weak while everyone sits on their fears of what the future brings. The gold bugs and Ron Paul voters out there remind us that many believe in imminent

A Continuing Theme

Two new acquisitions I had my eye on a Capped Bust Half Dime in the recent Heritage auction at the FUN show. It was an untoned 1830, graded MS65 - just right for my set. The reason I liked it was its exceptional strike. Early on, I entered what I thought was a strong bid. The starting bid at the live session was two increments below my secret maximum. But alas, live bidders took it up three increments. I watched, but did not want to pay two increments (or maybe one and a half with a cut bid) m

Coin Pics and Deals Deals Deals!

No flashing! Thought I'd pipe up and give Bully my answers to his questions... In regard to taking pictures of coins, you need to have a decent camera, no flash but LOTS of light, and either a steady hand or a tripod. Take closest picture possible, and use image software (like Photoshop) to scale and crop. If you don't have a decent camera (like me), then do the best with what you have. I'd rather spend money on more coins than on pictures of the ones I already have. Come to think of it, you

More on Value Acquisitions...9/11 Memorial Medal

Graded medals are less expensive than raw ones! Here's another example of how purchasing coins, in this case a medal, from dealers already graded can be less expensive than purchasing them raw from the US Mint, and submitting them on your for grading, to NGC or otherwise. While I don't ordinarily collect medals, in this case, the 9/11 Memorial Medal, made with ONE OUNCE of SILVER, and of a design which I found appealing, was something I wanted to buy. The medals are currently selling on the

Value acquisitions -- a better way to go?

...Nothing fancy, but affordable! I nabbed this coin when making another purchase. Shipping didn't cost, well, a nickel! The coin itself is lovely at Pf69 Ultra Cameo from NGC, and it included an Early Releases Label -- not a huge deal for this 2011-S Jefferson Nickel with the Monticello Reverse, but would have increased the grading price if I submitted the coin myself. All told, this slabbed coin cost me a mere $8.99, postage paid. Considering standard NGC grading fees, I swear it's chea

The Obverse is the Reverse and Vice Versa

On the Arkansas Centennial Half It's interesting the things you learn when you obtain a new coin. I just picked up the Robinson/Arkansas Half Dollar on Ebay and during my research, learned that the portrait side, depicting Arkansas Senator Joseph Robinson, is the reverse since the side with the Arkansas Coat of Arms (obverse) has the date, denomination, and "United States of America". This also holds true of the primary Arkansas Half which depicts a Native American and Liberty on its revers

Bought 2 coins

2 more Eisenhower Dollars I was lucky to get 3 Eisenhowers over the weekend, a top pop MS66 for the 1976 TYPE 1 and a top pop MS69 for the 1972S. I also bought another 1976 D TYPE 2 in MS67 just because I got a (steal) I mean deal on it. Hopefully I can use it as trade bait for one of the coins I need in my set. I am really glad that not many people show an interest in these coins, as the prices to buy are way lower than the NGC values. I am hopeing to have the #2 set by the end of this year w

GOOD BYE--2011

Here's to hopes for a better year Friends, Well the last year was a bit in line with the previous one. It will be nice when the country gets things turned around and headed in the right direction. I started the new year out with a clean up on sets. Deciding to upgrade I have pulled out coins and put up for sale or trade. The proof silver eagles were the first to go as I believe there are more collectors of those sets. I did add a few low pop cents to my wishing well collection and a few s

Why I started to collecting coins

2009 was a great year for collecting coins fo me. Hello to all my fellow collectors I hope 2011 was great year for all you're collecting. I started collecting back in 2009. I have come across some nice coins here in the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. I fell in love with the ASE and started to collect them only to be shot down by the US Mints miss handling of the series. Now I do not know if the broken series is worth the hard work of collecting the full series. My first purchase was the 20

Congratulations & A New Year's Resolution

Until now, all of my Journals have been a historical documentation of my coin acquisitions. I would like to take some time out in this journal entry to offer my congratulations to the 2011 NGC Registry Award Winners and to state my New Year's Resolution in relation to my collection. The Registry Awards this year seemed to have caused a very emotional response from many of the participants. I think it is important to realize that everyone in a position to win an award works very hard on their

"FIRST RELEASES"

Did You Get The Same E Mail I Did? On 24 December I sent in a PF70 Dragon for a Designation Review, requesting Early Releases, as it is eligible and on the 29th, received the notification that as of 1 Jan, we could also request that the Early Releases submissions be designated "First Releases." The coin I sent in was received 5 Jan and I called to see if I could make the switch..Not Even Close. Once the coin is in house, no changes can be made.. Okay, C'est Live.. A look back and now a look forward at 2012

No specific goals for me - other than to have fun!! I think I became lost in the battle to be #1 in 2011 - accomplishing that task in a few minor sets that are really just hollow victories, in my opinion. I've been refining my grading skills year over year since joining NGC - as attested by my results in the following table. Avg High Low Total 2008 66.16 68 64 30 2009 65.76 67 64 32 2010 65.94 68 65 16 2011 66.25 68 65 12 2012 The disturbing part for me is the lesser total

Thank you. I'm (almost) beyond words.

"Best Presented" is not something I would have expected. Thanks, Gary. I want to start by saying thanks to gherrmann44. I woke up this morning and checked my Android phone because it was saying I had email. I saw that one of the messages was from a friend at the collector's society that I unfortunately haven't talked to in quite some time. He sent the note to congratulate me, but he actually ended up telling me about the award, that one of my sets had won one of the 2011 Best Presented Awards.

A Bargain Coin to Start 2012, How Much Better Does It Get!

A tough hole filled with a quality coin. Hit me, beat me, gag me with a spoon! Talk about being in the right place at the right time! 2012 is starting off on a fantastic note. I just added a 1967 SMS MS67RD Lincoln Memorial Cent to my Proof Set for a whopping $15.00. I have at least a PF69UC for every year from 1984 through 2011. Picking up high quality coins from 1983 and earlier to add to the set has been proving to be a bit of a challenge both in availability and cost. This wasn't one of my

an arduous endeavor nears its end First of all, congratulations to all of the registry winners- each and every award is well-deserved and don't let anyone else's frustrated words detract from your moment of due recognition. Your passion for the hobby is evident in the sets assembled by some and the presentations done by others. I have had less fervor this past year myself and have taken a more subdued direction in my collecting. Maybe 12-15 coins added and half of those were upgrades to existi

Which 1932 coin would it be?

There are not many options! The first coin I ever owned was given to me as a birth gift by my paternal grandfather. It is a 1907 Liberty $2.50 gold piece. Several years ago I had it slabbed by PCGS (one of my "free" gradings for being a paid member), and was pleased it found itself in a MS65 holder. On my mother's side, the giving of coins to newborns was practiced as well. She was born in Ohio in May of 1933. When her father went to the bank to get a 1933 coin, options were few. The only d

Congratulations and Well Done One and All!

Everyone one is a winner and it's time to get back in the game. Well the NCG Awards have been posted and a hearty congratulation is order for all the winners. Well Done! The levels achieved by the collectors in this group never cease to amaze and inspire me. As a relatively small collector tied to a very limited budget I greatly appreciate the ability to look at and admire coins that are but a faint dream for adding to my collection. Yet, the complete sets so masterfully put together by others

RE: Rare Label Collecting?

And parallels with the Comic Book Bust. MV Coins struck a nerve when he mentioned the proliferation of different labels that are being produced for various editions of the SAE. i was heavily into comic book collecting from the early 90's until around 2005 and I recall the craziness that ensued when all the companies started producing variant covers for their products. Content was the same in every case but the covers HAD to be collected or your set was not complete. One book in particula

Gentlemen, Gentlemen. . Awards are over (for now),

Time to get ready for next year. A few years ago, I decided to put together a theme set that appealed to me (not having anything to do with the Registry), discovering that I had inadvertently already acquired most of the coins through the years. I set the coins and some associated pictures and materials in a display, and set it up at my daughter's school for a presentation. I thought that the coins along with my descriptions and related articles would spark some interest in the topic. Turns o

Rare Label Collecting?

Another RARE NGC "WINTER LABEL" is this Coin Collecting? I am still curious by the ever increasing number of NGC labels. It used to be folks collected coins based on quality, condition, rarity or even historical interest. Today the trend seems to be heading in the direct of Rare Label collecting. In this example it is not so much the ASE coin as the RARE "WINTER LABEL" that seems to be the prize. If every new coin is a 69 or 70 maybe this is the future.
