My Latest USA/Philippines Acquisition - the flip side

I was going to add this addendum as a follow up post in the message boards, but since there is no link, I'll just have to add it as another journal entry. I wanted to post the flip side of both medals so that I could point out one interesting observation. The reverse of all of the Silver medals I've seen seems to be rotated about 20 degrees or so, whereas the Bronze medals appear to have been struck with no die rotation. Not terribly important, but interesting. On another note, I don't kno

The Mint and U.S. Military History

Can you name the mystery Mint described in this Journal? Can you name the only U.S. Branch Mint that was ever captured and occupied by an invading foreign army, or the U.S. Branch Mint that was the scene of one of the largest and most fiercely fought battles in U.S. Military History. Here is another hint; In 1936 this mint struck a series of three commemorative coins many of thom were dumpted into the sea to prevent their capture by an invading foreign army. Final hint, this mint used an M Min

Photo's and lack of detail

Really hard to tell and wary of buying Last night I spent a good hour looking at various coins for sale on E-Bay and oh my do many sellers need help. Their photo's are either very blurry, show no detail are mis-colored because they are using the wrong settings on their camera. I probably saw maybe 10 sellers in that hour who had really nice photo's that showed their coins well and you knew what you were buying. The others, I can see why their coins weren't selling. Probably another 40 perc

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Happy Happy Joy Joy Journal for the week of January 15 through January 22, 2012What a great week I've had! I've spent months looking for a 2010 Clad Pf70UC Kennedy Half, not only at a decent price, but for any price at all. The silver coin is readily available, but the clad has been so elusive. I wanted to grab one before December to complete a perfect 2010 proof set, but none were ever offered. Then, suddenly, one appeared for auction. My eyes widened and my heart raced... this beauty would be

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED IT

This isn't fun anymore. Hey there Rick, Thank you for your offer on the trades, but I think I am going to just sell as much as I can being myself to letting go. I think that if I was to trade/buy any more stuff, I would just want to put it up on the Registry, and that is exactly what I want out off. I have been collecting for about 10 years now. I have been an active player on the registry for about 8 of those years. Over those 8 years I have added, deleted, re-added, re-deleted sets

Grading Without Reporting a Reason....How Does the Average Joe Learn?

I thought NGC would help me understand grading better. I guess they are too busy with slabbing a couple million Silver Eagles for the shopping channels...... I recently purchased an 1884 Morgan CC MS66 originally graded by NGC. When I received this coin it was so far and away better than any other MS66 Morgan I own my first thought was to send it in for another look. This coin looks as good as any MS67 I've seen. Now granted, I am new at collecting after re-entering the hobby. It has bee

Remember the Joy of Collecting ?

Before the grading services, coin collecting was a hobby... For those of you out there old enough, remember filling that last space in a Lincoln Cent Album? Coin collecting was a hobby then. Now it is a bit different. I have been reading the latest journals and hear a lot of pain, anger, and frustration. Different colored labels drive some folks nuts. NGC's latest "bait-and-switch" with regard to PCGS world coins is making some collectors consider a new hobby. The silver eagle program a

Auction sites are not created equal...

... or Why I won't be buying from Heritage today. After reading about a deal a fellow collector got on Heritage, I decide to poke around on the various auction sites today. Here are my thoughts: On Heritage, the minimum BP is $14, plus shipping of $6+... so I would have to pay at least $20 before the bidding every begins. Sorry, thats just too outrageous for low priced coins. Why would I buy a modern coin for $20 + bid, when I can pick up the same coins on eBay for $5-$10 shipped? I just do

Well What Do I Do Now?

I know I'm not crossing over my PCGS world coins. If there's anything I cannot stand is changing the rules in the middle of the game. It's like if I can't win, let's change the rules until I win. All along, we've been told that our PCGS coins are welcome in the NGC registry, but now I'm treated as a 2nd class citizen because I have PCGS coins in an NGC registry. Granted, it is an NGC registry, and I've always felt a set populated with more than 50 % NGC coins should have some kind of preferent

i have a solution

keeping the way it is!!!! NGC should look at giving two scores for each registry set, keep the current score and add 1 score including the NGC coins only, that would please every one including my self. To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

I Believe

What we need in the collecting world I pray and hope for fairness for all collectors. May the grading company realize that all collectors are treated equal, regardless of the label on their coins. I believe that if a grading company records and publicizes their grading results, and if each grading company promotes the elimination of fake coins in our markets then they should be compared equally on all registry sets. For the good of all collectors, regardless of the color of their label.

Oh BOY!! What a Surprise.

NGC 's PCGS Decission O.K., I've been out of circulation for a couple of years. Sorry. I've been a little active with the community, but, poorly. Concentrating in paying off my house takes alot of time and energy. What a surprise though. Seeing that PCGS coins are gone from my sets at the end of January. I have worked so hard on my sets. I always believed in NGC for the registry due to the fact that they would alow a "collector" to build the best set possible. I called my sets "hybrid" sets. Y

Hope for the 21st Century (SeT)?

I just didn't want to wait another decade for an update. Hi Folks, Now that we are in 2012, I have been thinking about my Sacagawea sets and the opportunity to do their annual updates. Those two sets plus the 21st Century Type Set are the only sets I currently maintain that have the potential for annual updates. So, for the longest time, my little coin collecting brain was contemplating the 21st Century set and wondering if/when there would be an addition to the set. I think I se

Submissions to NGC - Turnarounds

Whether it was your 25th Anniversary SAE sets or other submissions, what do you think when you read the turnaround time on NGC's web site? A question for the group, and I am having this post to the Message Boards as well. I welcome your private responses as well. When you submit your coins, say under Modern or Modern Special (or any other) tiers, and NGC's site says 12 Working Days, like it does here: http://www.ngccoin.com/services/services.asp What do you take that to mean? WHO, IN YOUR WORLD, IS THE BEAR?

DAYS OF THE PAST, THE BEAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CUSTOMER. NOW, ALL OF THE SUDDEN, THE BEAR IS THE BIG COMPANIES THAT HAVE THE CUSTOMER CORNERED BECAUSE OF SERVICE OR LACK THERE OF. OR BECAUSE OF SPECIAL CONNECTIONS THAT OFFERES SPECIAL LABELS OR TURN-AROUND TIMES FOR THOSE "BIG DEALERS". MAYBE SITTING IN THE CLOSET SUCKING YOUR THUMB IS YOUR WAY OF DEALING WITH DISGUSTING FEES, SERVICE, AND EGOTISTICAL BEHAVIOR. HOWEVER, THAT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME.

Total Hype, No Substance

Or How Ebay Fooled Me Into Thinking They Cared..... Hi Folks, Got an intriguing email from Ebay a couple of days ago that thanked me for my 15 years of membership and invited me to click a link to obtain a certificate I could proudly display. Okay, its only ebay but I thought, what the Heck, it might be kind of cool, so I clicked the link and I got the attached. A certificate that doesn't mention my name and doesn't even reference the 15 year anniversary. WHY would they send me such a

Collectors lose

When collecting your sets remember to watch out for the following Keep in mind you will never have all of the labels Keep in mind you might not be able to afford to add coins to your sets in the future. Don't reference the big dealers that NGC deals with. Dont talk about preferential treatment for labels. Dont talk about special turn around times for special dealers. Dont mention to keep the collecting community in mind Dont poke the Bear. I pray and hope for fairness for all c

The buying of Red Chinese coins is immoral.

Think about what you are supporting when you purchase the Panda Coins minted in Red China. Fellow Numismatists; please open your hearts and minds. I am shocked and appalled when I see my fellow collectors and hobbyist actively and with relish buying and collecting The People's Republic of China's series of Panda silver and gold coins. Every dollar given to the Chinese government is a victory over the political freedoms and human rights that we as Americans at least claim that are important a

World Coin Registry Sets

Is NGC taking a step in the wrong direction by making World Coin sets NGC exclusive? Over the last year or two, NGC has greatly enhanced the coin registry to allow for expanded ways to manage your entire coin collection (NGC or not), which is part of the reason I was all the more surprised to read the announcement in NGC's most recently emailed newsletter which indicated that effective January 31st of this year, World Coin Registry Sets will become NGC Exclusive.
