Added a Jefferson #44 100 Greatest

Added some Jeffersons to my colections and one being Rank #44 of the 100 Greatest. This week I had a little money buy some Jefferson coins. I got beat out in an auction for a nice 1994 P Jefferson Nickel Matte "Special Uncirculated" NGC SP 69 Rank # 44 100 Greatest US Modern Coins for $41.00. My wife asked me a question and I forgot to increase my bid within the last 5 seconds. Found it on another auction and won it for $67.00 so I learn my lesion when bidding at the last seconds hide from

2011 1 OZ Mint State W gold Eagle

The 2011 1 OZ Mint State W gold Eagle did you get one? Two weeks ago (Jan 10th 2012) you could have bought the 2011 W Gold Eagle Mint State for only $1828.00 dollars. Then the US mint notified everyone that they sold out of the 1 OZ Gold Eagle. THey then announced to the Public that the mintage was only 8,810.00 1 oz coins. Did you know the 2008 Gold 1 OZ Buffalo that today sells for $4000.00 was 18,863 1 Oz coins. Did you get your 2011 MS W eagle? Right now that coin is fetching $2500.00

#1 1776-1976 Clad Mint Set

Got it by chance. I didn't know about the mint set standings, just happened to notice them on the "sets" listing page. So I listed my IKES and ended up with the number 1 set. I also purchased the '76-D Quarter in MS67 which I will be adding as soon as it arrives. Wish I would've noticed this last year.MAILMAN

I'm Glad too Moondoggy!

Inspired by a great fellow collector! I love moondoggy's set up, and am inspired to build my own tent. The set up that I lost in on eBay was priced at $15, so I wasn't about to pay $50+ for one! I purchased my new camera this morning... a Pentax K10D. I chose Pentax because my 35mm camera is a Pentax, and all the lenses (which are the most expensive parts, as moondoggy found out!) can be used with it... also, I got it for about half the price I could on any sites, even used. When it arrives

If LJ Rambo is Right, My Prediction from a Couple Months Ago is Fullfilled

On 12/7/2011 I posted a S mint marked coin prediction for 2012! I saw this coming. We were being test marketed with this Struck in SF designated coin. The Mint was doing some market research and decided they could sell more Silver Eagles by issuing more varieties. I would not buy a (S) Struck in (no MM) knowing a S mint marked is coming unless NGC makes it a requirement for the set. This is the obverse of my 2012 ASE. MS69

Wow am I glad I looked

Way less expensive as a DIY project SPHansen just wrote about bidding on a tabletop light kit on E-Bay. When I went to look at the setups and the price, I was so glad I just built my own. Some of these kits were between $49 and up to $225 I built my light tent (box) for under $10 I can change the background from white to light blue to black and to grey whatever I choose. I also chose to use CFL flood lamps (5000k) (natural daylight) which always remain cool to the touch. I've attached a

LOOKING BACK AT 2011

I Am Back/ A Rising Tide Lifted My Boat! Recently, my mind was running through the past year: they seem to be spinning by faster, these days. I began to ponder, "What were MY significant numismatic events of 2011?&"; The answer, I believe, condenses to 2 things. First, this year marked my return to active collecting after a 2+ year hiatus. Early 2011 purchases of a 1927-D $1.00 and a 1912-S Liberty 5 cent served as catalysts to reignite my numismatic fire. In addition, the 1912-S led

Actual Silver Eagles with the W and S Mint Mark released later this year.(NO PARENTHESES)

Why buy a graded 2012 (W) or (S) silver eagle, the real mint mark will be released later this year. Ok so we know that there is an amount of hype we endure when collecting coins, but I have to remind everyone that if the montages are high on a coin that your adding to your collection then be patient and purchase it later in the year. The 2012 un-circulated Silver Eagle is being minted in both San Francisco and West Point. If you can send a sealed green monster box to NGC they will slab it w

USA/Philippine Commonwealth Era (1936 - 1945) Reverse Designs

Design elements of the Commonwealth Reverse are steeped in the History of the Philippines. I thought that I would take this opportunity to update the information in my previous Journal entry (Crossovers - Part 2) with some interesting information on the history behind the design elements of the common reverse used on USA/Philippine Commonwealth era coins. Here is a picture of the reverse of the 1936 M Roosevelt Quezon Peso depicted in my earlier Journal entry and a link to the coin in my Regis

A Minor Little Find

Puts a Major Smile On My Face Hi all, As we all know, examining your change is one of the best ways to find little treasures that have somehow found their way into circulation. Well tonight, I found this beautiful 1946-S Dime in my change at the local McDonald's. It may be a little scruffy but Franklin sure looks good to me. Later, Malcolm

Struck at West Point Label is only for Big dealers

An added Money maker the creation of a rare coin to get more money Folks: Unless you are a big time dealer who sends in a bulk order of a sealed Monster box with West Point doucuments. NGC will not give you that label as with most bulk deals the grading fees are $5-$7 a coin they pay only for the coins that grade 69 or 70 the rest get returned ungraded to be sold to us as raw coins. I feel we should all band together and send "THEM" a message by not buying any of those coins with labels that a

My Newest Addition to My Modern Commemorative Set

The 3rd purchase this year Hello Everybody, Just wanted to share really quick my newest addition to my Modern Commemorative Set, a 2001 Capitol Silver $1 graded MS70. It was one of those impluse buys that we all do once in awhile and for $80, it wasn't too bad on the pocket book. Take care Jeffrey To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. Image Quest Continues!

Am I getting better? So, I've been on this quest to get the best possible images of my coins possible. Here I have added two 400 watt studio lights diffused, and using a really crappy point n shoot digital camera. I am going to finally spring for a much nicer SLR digital in the next day or so. I have my eye on a Pentax K10D... (because I have several lenses for Pentax SLRs) I like the contract between the field and the devices... do my fellow collectors agree? Would love feedback on this lat

NGC & PCGS in Registry

Collector is the Boss Hi, I have not made an effort in the past to participate in the Journal entries, but my interest is heating up. I agree 100% with the other entries questioning NGCs decision to purge PCGS coins from World Registry sets and I believe US is not far behind if they don't get the message. I think the Competetive Registry Sets are fun, keeps things organized and makes you a part of the NGC and Numismatic community. I don't see a valid reason to purge PCGS coins other than to ent

Moondoggy Was Spot On

About poor photos and depressed interest on EbaY Folks, Moondoggy recently posted his displeasure with the quality of photos that are used by some sellers when trying to entice buyers. His basic point was that bad photos will be inherently less attractive to potential buyers and will probably depress the ultimate sale price. Here is a perfect example of Moondoggy's concerns. This picture was used to illustrate the obverse of a 1943/2 Jefferson Nickel. UNBELIEVABLE, the link to the actu

A coin that would make Grandpa smile!

Workin' my way backwards... I'm working on a First Year of Issue Type Set. I started with the most recent coin types and I'm quickly working my way backwards. Figured that'd allow me to pick up a few examples relatively quickly and cheaply before I start getting too buried in the past... and auction receipts. Picked up this very nice MS 67 RD example of a 1909 VDB Lincoln cent. Sure, it's not a San Fran example, but it sure is gorgeous. It currently has an NGC graded population of 78, with o

Agree With BeawChan

but I don't think it will happen First off, I have cooled down now, the venting helped immensely. I totally agree with BeawChans journal entry. Even though I have taken out all of my PCGS coins, I would love to put back my 3 Buffalo nickels, 2 Morgan Dollars, all my Commemorative Dollars, State and ATB Quarters, and all of my Westward Journey nickels. However, I am not convinced NGC will do this, first of all, if it is crossover business they are after, why grandfather any in? I am at a lo

The Collectors Journal

The Collectors Journal is a really GREAT feature!!! Although I have belonged to the Collectors Society for several years now and maintain both Competitive and Custom Registry Sets until recently I had never posted a Journal Entry. When I posted my first Journal entry last week I was suprised at the number of views that it recieved. In fact my Journal entry recieved more views in the first 24 hours than my prize winning USA/Philippines Type Set http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry

Filled it up I/we, my wife and I have completed the 2011 Eagles Set, Mint State competitive set. We have never been able to accomplish anything like this in our lives. I must say thanks to a few members and a few dealers who helped us get here. THANK YOU, you know who you are, and I know they did not want to share their names, and I respect that. Thanks to all the members who read my journal entries and have given advise, help etc, and those who scoffed, I say thanks because it made us work

The Roanoke Commemorative Half

The Lost Colony remembered. Folks, Just picked up my MS64 PCGS Roanoke Half Dollar yesterday and I was immediately reminded why I love numismatics. The story behind this coin is one of the most interesting stales in American History. The Roanoke Half was minted to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the birth of Virginia Dare, the first baby borne to English parents in the New World. The reverse of the Half depicts Virginia's mother Elenora holding the new born Virginia. The colony w

Lehigh Coins: E-Bay Store Update

In my last journal entry, I announced that had recently lost my job and that I was planning on opening an E-Bay store (Lehigh Coins) in order to help liquidate my collection. One week ago today, I started listing my duplicate Jefferson Nickels on my newly opened E-Bay Store. As a complete neophyte to selling on E-Bay, it was taking me 30 minutes to complete each listing. I worked diligently over the first two days to list as many items as I could. By the end of the third day I had listed al
