NGC Journals

Sad day indeed!

Not that I have any #1 sets with PCGS coins,but... I admired NGC for making it possible to include PCGS coins in their registry sets. PCGS graded coins are, at a minimum, of comparable quality and NGC's openness to them was laudable. As another poster had mentioned, they appeared perched on a moral high ground. Not that any of my #1 World sets have anything but NGC coins in them. As a matter of fact, I find that top-pop PCGS coins are a lot more expensive. But I liked the convenience of sh

IT'S ONLY BUSINESS, IT'S NOT PERSONAL SONNY..(QUOTE FROM THE GODFATHER)..

NO MORE PCGS GRADED COINS..HURRAY!! Well Dr Naranjo, it looks like it's the end of your #1 rein in the rankings for the 1963-Date Kennedy Half Registry..Bravo..Well done..I guess this statement applies to many collectors who purchased PCGS graded coins..Now your going to have to send them all back to NGC for regrading or crossover and pay them millions of dollars to do it..Oh well, live and learn..

It's a sad day for NGC World Registry Sets

The recent NGC decision to eliminate PCGS certified coins from World Registry Sets may help the NGC bottom line but it will definately hurt the hobby and the quality of World Registry Sets. I was really disappointed to hear that effective January 31 2012 PCGS certified coins will be eliminated from NGC World Registry Sets. One of the most appealing aspects of the NGC Registry ( and why I found it superior to the PCGS Registry) was that it allowed both NGC and PCGS certified coins. I always t

My First Experience with Heritage Auction!

And my first purchase. Hello Fellow Collectors, My first experience with Heritage went quite nicely. I joined up at the biginning of the year and spent a few days reseaching past auctions on numerous modern commemoratives. I found out that there are some very nice coins to be had at very nice prices. Even when the final value includes the buyer's premium...which put me off at first...the prices were well under the completed and BIN auctions on Ebay. I put some bids on a few coins and won t

1888 morgan dollar

Newest addition to my collection of Morgan dollars So I recently have been searching for the perfect 1888-P Morgan dollar for my set. My goal was to find one with good strike and attractive to the eye in MS65. I have had a hard time finding one with both qualities at a good price. here's my situation..... I finally found one that looks awesome! All the qualities I was looking for. Great detail on the key points of the surface and great luster! I truly have not seen a 65 that has looked t

PCGS graded coins

Unbelievable decision of NGC it's amazing the decision of NGC to throw out all PCGS graded coins from their world registry set. were is the respect that NGC should have for all these collector's including myself regarding this decision. It's understandable that after Jan. 31 , 2012 , NGC won't accept in their registry PCGS graded coins , but after all the work and financial investment that we the collectors have made to make a set a #1 or #2 and suddenly the set will go to a very low position

What do you think?

Budget photography! Would love to get the opinion of my fellow collectors... here is my latest experiment for imaging my collection. I like the contrast and detail of the coin, as well as the color... not bad for a cheap camera. There is a little glare, but I'm working to remove that entirely. Do you think it is good enough for competition? Be honest, you won't hurt my feelings ;P

Thanks, Goals and an Explanation

There is no dark side in our amazing hobby. This journal entry is overdue, it's been a busy year already with longer hours at work and eye surgery. The good news is my eyes are a lot better, at least the left one is. I had surgery (laser) today on my right eye, and I have a follow-up appointment tomorrow to make sure everything is ok. I am still going to be needing glasses (to read with) but that's a small price to pay for overall better eyesight. First for the thanks, thank you NGC for my 2

The Proverbial Fox in the ANA Hen House Caught

But they need some more help Folks, Just read an article on the Coin World website concerning the recent conviction of a man for stealing almost 1 million dollars worth of coins from the ANA money museum during his brief tenure as Museum Collection Manager. 1938 D MS 67+ Buffalo Nickel

Who Doesn't Love a Nice Buffalo Nickel While it is easy to find NGC 1938 D MS 67 Buffalo Nickels for less than $150, the MS 68 version will set you back to the tune of $4,000 or more. A MS 67+ is really a nice compromise. You get more than double the NGC points of a regular 67 for just a few dollars more. You also get a really nice coin for the price.

A final ASE 25th Anniversary Journal

you won't believe this one........ I had casually mentioned on the Chat Boards that I had gotten my ASE 25th Anniversary order for 2 sets placed at around 6:00pm EST on the day of release ( 10/27/11). My order was immediately placed on backorder and every week or 2 I have gotten an email bumping it further down the road..EXAMPLE: your order is scheduled to ship appx 11/25..on 11/25 I'd get an email saying, " your order expected to ship 12/7..and on and on it went week after week..my latest

Edging Ever so Closer

This past week I made an upgrade to "Gary's Golden Wilhelmina Guldens" that brings me ever so closer to the ultimate goal for this set. About three years ago, I started an 11-coin set of Netherlands Wilhelmina 10 Guldens. Before the end of 2009, I completed my set of small European gold coins with six previously certified coins and five raw coins submitted to NGC for certification. My original set containing six coins grading at MS-63 and 64, and five coins grading at MS-65 and higher, won t

Second-Class Citizens

California Gold Rush "tokens" - second class citizens to the major grading companies... During the California Gold Rush, private makers (usually jewelers) minted small denomination gold "coins" many of which actually circulated as the need for coinage was intense (ever try to measure a "pinch" of gold dust with your fingers - bartenders were sometimes hired based on the size of their hands). These coins were deemed illegal by the US Government eventually and many of the folks making such coin

Standard holder I am looking for this coin holder MS70 2011 Silver eagle. Sometimes called the standard label, the regular label, or the brown/gold label. This is just like any other yr. Eagle holder, and other denominations. It was used early before they came out with the 25th Anniversary brown label. They then called that the standard label. But it was only for the 2011 yr, because the 2012s have the "standard" label. If anyone has one for sale the 2011 label or knows of someone who is

Coin Photography On The Cheap

And maybe even a little tiny bit Sketchy..... Just finished Revenant's entry regarding his coin photography experiences and just had to add my own two pennies. BTW, nice to meet you Revenent and glad you've returned to the Boards so noobs like me can enjoy your posts. Anyway, I have a cheap digital camera that flashes everytime I try to take a coin photograph. I realize I could read the manual and determine how to turn off the flash but I just don't care enough to bother. Here are my five

Coin Photography: 2 years later

The problem of even lighting Going down this road is probably a mistake... a soul-sucking, time-destroying, horrible mistake. I remember how much time I spent trying to take "good" photos of my coins last time. I don't need to do that again... but I wanted to try... In 2007-2009, when I did the bulk of my collecting and coin photography I could never really get pictures I was happy with. This is a problem many of us share. Coins are highly reflective surfaces and you can't just point a light

First Journal and First Coin of 2012

This is my first journal entry. After being a Collector's Society member for about two months it is time for my first journal entry. Let me introduce myself. I am a nuclear engineer and live in Michigan where I was born and raised. I have been collecting coins for oh about two months now and am finding it both exciting and relaxing. What got me into coin collecting was the birth of my first son. I wanted to do something special for his birth year and I thought getting coins from the year

My First MS66 Morgan

Morgan Addition MS66 My first MS66 1879 Morgan, added this one threw E-bay.... and very happy with this high grade addition to my set. This was after my MS65* graded 1879 S added two weeks ago. I have learned that not all coins are as beautiful as others regardless of grades. The more you study Morgans the more you come to appreciate and learn the beauty of each strike and sheen. To think of the age of these coins and how long they had to sit with no transactions taking place when a dollar rea

"In God We Trust" . . . Our Kids? (Ah, Jury's out!)

. . . I remember going through my "daily take", after a day with my shoe-shine box Over the last year, I've been flipping through some of the sets and Journals here at NGC, I've seen so many beautiful, valueable, and quite extensive collections, some of US coins I didn't know even existed. One has to wonder with some of these sets "When would this person have time to do anything else?" It is also obvious that some of those collectors are very well off. At least the've invested in a worthwhile

No one seems to care...

Sometimes I think "Why do I waste my time and cash". I am 45 and I have been collecting since I was a kid and dealing on and off for the last 4 years. When I am selling sometimes I think "I am going to regret selling that one" and to no ones supprise I have. I have made some cash but I have lost cash as well. At one show I made some great cash on Gold so one night I figured I would buy a bunch and turn it for a bunch of cash. Well,,,, it didn't turn out that way and I damn near lost my shirt o

The Envelope Please, And The Winner Is

All collectors are winners in my mind Hi everyone. Congratulations to all the registry and journal award winners this year. In the long run we as collectors are all winners. People collect many different things and for many different reasons. When I started collecting as a child it was for the fun of it. All these years later it is still fun but their are other reasons I collect now as well. I was honored this year to bring in 2 registry awards for my 1959-Date Circulation Issue and for
