  1. I was at a shop down south last summer and I was looking at some Morgan's. Nothing in the shop was in slabs everything was as is or in 2X2. I looked on one shelf and he had some CC's I said wow you don't see a lot of those sitting on the shelf's nowadays. He was a cool guy and we had a lot in common he took me over to his safe that was a 4 foot tall tank opened it up and he had tubes upon tubes of CC's and other collectable coins. He grabbed some tubes opened them up and slid them CC's out like they were a can of Pringle potato chips. Real nice stuff toned and MS. He winked at me and said he was going to be closing shop soon and retire. Coin collectors are few and far between nowadays with internet availability, but he would never go hungry.
  2. There may still be a large generation of old-timers like Kurt who don't care if there coins have a grade they know what the coin is worth therefore no need to put it in plastic. I like slabs only for the benefit for my family to not have to guess what it is after I am gone . The Half Eagle Indian I posted in the other thread was a tray coin before I got it. Not that it is a extremely valuable coin but I think there are still some big collections out there without plastic on them.
  3. I would not be to sure about that I have been to a few coin shops that don't put the real good stuff out front and have really big safes in the back. You did say not all .LoL
  4. For all you roll hunters out there. I know what it is like. You look and look the odds are in your favor, the more you hunt the more likely you will find something. Remember most of the stuff you find won't buy a cup of coffee but sometimes you get lucky and it just feels good anyway, and to me that is worth the time we spend looking. I found this nice clean 1995 P Spike Head this morning. Still not worth a cup of coffee there are lots of them out there But it is a keeper for the error tin. If you want to see more you can look here.........http://cuds-on-coins.com/jefferson-nickel-spike-heads-1938-1999/ Happy Hunting All. JP
  5. In the end neither coin is going to be a big return do to the high mintage. The big thing with DE's is after the $2400 basic range it jumps up to 3000 and then on to infinity I find the numismatic value of any coin has more of a chance when it goes up in price to stay there. Bullion goes wherever it is told to. But this is why I am here to look and learn. I thank you all for you insight it is priceless.
  6. I agree you have to ring the bell at $2000 to get it for $2240 with a BP of 12% and a DE is a hard find in MS for that. I will have to pick a really good song and put on my dancing shoes to get that 04 or 08 for $2250. Maybe tears will help. LoL
  7. Thanks Hoghead, I have been lucky on some of the odd ones It is going to take a while longer and some I may never find but it is worth the wait when I do find them.
  8. I am going to wait until after the Sunday night auction and see what transpires before making a counter offer on the 1904 and 1908 . I don't think they will have jumped off the shelf this weekend.
  9. This 39 is a nice coin but where are my manners. This 2013 D is no show stopper but I could not pass it up for $5 I don't want this coin I got today to feel unwanted or left out so here it is.
  10. I always say, I am not in a hurry and something will come along but watching the bidding prices going up at the auctions is a little unnerving. I see coins that were toping out not long ago at just over spot now 3 or 4 bills more. It is not just gold I see my Nickels and Morgan's getting harder and harder to pick up cheap like it was 6 months ago. It is not like collectors bidding it feels more like people with money. You can tell when a coin that is not quite right just keeps getting bumped. LoL
  11. I have been hitting the auctions but by the time the last bell sounds they are all around the same $ in the end but I still try LoL
  12. Ya it has been on my want list for a while it is not a flashy coin only a 64FS but what caught my eye the most was It looked like it had a crack in the New and improved 40 reverse. LoL So here ya go.
  13. Thank you both for your comments . I tell ya what is getting my goat is everywhere I go shopping PCGS prices are always a higher value than NGC, especially on gold coins. Same coin same grade same look it is just not right in my book.
  14. Well now that I have gotten my feet wet I want to show two pieces I am looking at and get some ideas from the guys who know. I have a choice on one of these I can purchase for $2300. Both are common and are not key dates that gaining very fast. So the question is should I just grab one at that price and do a lot of praying or pass and look for a better coin down the road. The Saint has a nice knee and nose and the LH has a over all clean look. Sorry the pictures are not that great. Any comments are welcome please.
  15. I have resolved that any large purchase's from now on will be graded coins only. My second purchase was a bit of a beat up Quarter Eagle in a 2X2 the price was very nice and it was acceptable in my book for that amount but after getting it home I removed it from the paper holder to weigh it and then looking at it with the USB microscope I could see something wrong with the rim. You could see that it had a drilled out hole that had been refilled with gold ? Some time in the past it must have had a stud for a chain to hook on it. Needless to say because I got it from a reputable dealer he was happy to take it back. I was able to return it so I took the refund right there and with a little more money I grabbed a Half Eagle AU 58 graded coin as a replacement. It is banged up but the marks are all uniform so to me it makes it look naturally even everywhere. LoL It is not a big money coin but I like it.
  16. Well today a coin I have been waiting for came in a 1939 S Reverse of 40 MS 64 FS well actually two coins the other one is a 2013 D MS66 FS a nice coin for the collection. The 39 S R 40 is something I have been searching for. That coin is kinda of a pricy coin that luckily I got for a song so I am a happy camper.
  17. Thanks for making this thread no one talks much about gold. Not sure why ? I am not new to collecting coins but I am new to spending money on collecting. LoL This is the first Year I have made some larger purchases with my Nickels, Morgan's and some gold coins. Information about gold coins would be greatly appreciated. Like with all coins finding a deal may not always be the best way to go for a return. I find myself doing a lot more research do to the larger investment of gold. Now sometimes you get lucky. My first gold piece I purchased was a year ago April and it turned out to be a 75% gainer for me so far, and it is a way cool looking coin which was what I really was looking for first anyway.
  18. It is a messed up coin looks like it had a acid bath 40 years ago or it just got dug up after 40 years. Sorry ,I would give up on this cent.
  19. Sorry Susan .It all looks like PMD, displaced metal to me. Something hits the metal and will move a piece to a new location and get reattached being pushed back into the coin making it look like a die chip.
  20. Nothing but the best of the best for the 65,66 and 67 SMS coins.....( Floor sweepings from the warehouse)
  21. Very Cool, I hope it is a big hit with NGC.
  22. It is to hard to tell on a coin that old 56 years of kicking around can change a persons looks. Now if I was at gun point I would say PMD it looks like the metal has been displaced.
  23. I have always had good luck with Northeast. I have not sold anything with them yet?
