  1. Got it off Great Collections a few weeks ago. Most of the best coins Ive got came from there.
  2. Well Im home stranded with covid today. Im in fine shape, taking it well with only minor symptoms. I didnt want to spread it to my work friends so I figured I better stay home a few days. Im taking this time looking at all the coins in my mixed box. Its coins I bought that I found appealing but havent had no plans to make sets with them. I guess you could call them type coins. I also enjoy collecting coins that I really like as singles. Ive got a few Morgans, couple ancients, ASEs, a Connecticut copper, some world coins, and a few others. I got some Im planning on making sets out of later such as Roosevelt dimes and Jefferson nickels, both going to be business strikes. I got a few proofs I may turn into sets one of these days. It will be later on down the road after I complete the sets Im working on and the sets next in line. I love this hobby so much theres alot of things I want to do and its hard to choose what I want to do the most because I cant do them all. Im trying to stop myself from trying to start too many sets. But If I see a coin I really like that dosent go to a set Im putting together and Im able to get it, I will buy it as a single. Ive got a few singles on my bucket list. I really want to add a gold coin to my set. Its been driving me crazy for the past couple years. Im thinking about putting back a few dollars in an envelope every so often and save up and get one. I love gold coins but most are way out of my budget. I love the gold thread that was started. Even though I dont own none of my own I can still enjoy admiring everyone elses. Ive seen some amazing coins on that thread.
  3. Thank you my friend. My son really liked it so I bidded on it and lucked out and won. Its mine and his favorite so far. I like the old green PCGS holder its in also. I know your supposed to collect the coin and not the plastic, but I really like it when I can find a really nice coin in an older holder.
  4. https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/competitive-sets/391063/ Heres the link to our Franklins @Simple Collector. We dont have very many of them yet. We dont have any very high grade coins. I already had a couple before we started the set that we used in it. We may do some upgrading later on. Replace a couple of those rougher looking coins. Were waiting on NGC to accept a 1948 graded by PCGS to add to it to. It graded MS64 FBL. Heres pics of it below.
  5. FRANKLIN HALVES: Another thing I like to collect is Franklin halves. My youngest son is helping me pick out ones to add to the set. Even though Im the one paying for them I still consider it mine and his set. I labeled it with both our names in the registry. And they will go to him anyways. We are going for a full set of business strikes, all in MS. Using the registry as a guide for them to. I dont really call ours competing in the registry. More like displaying in the registry. We dont have a chance in the world of ever getting close to the top 10 but we still like to show them amongst some of the finest collections in the world. Ive seen some pretty impressive coins looking through others sets on there. We are trying to pick some lusterous coins. Trying for FBL when we can but got a few coins without them such as those dreaded S mint marks. We got a couple beauties that are not FBL. My son likes those rim toners. Hes got a good eye for them. He picked the last few we got out. Ive truly fell in love with the Franklin halves and have a deeper appriceation for them. What a great denomination to show such a great man on. Its been an honor spending quality time together with him on this father/son set. This set will be prized above the rest for that reason.
  6. They sure are. I enjoy seeing the ones he post. Some of the finest Ive ever seen. Some of the most beautifully toned and lusterous. He takes some of the best photos Ive seen also. One of these days Im gonna try to get better photos of my coins for my registry profile. Hes got a very impressive collection. Thank you @Buffalo Headfor sharing the pictures of your coins with us so we can enjoy them also.
  7. Part 3: After finding the forum my collecting really kicked in high gear. I read thread after thread following all of you guys. I was always very shy and it took me a long time until I finally asked about a coin or two. You all helped me a whole lot and never even knew it. I would read and learn things from your post before I even started posting on here. I started buying more coins only I started buying certified coins. I tried a few raw Morgans but ended up with a few problem coins. I got some scratched and cleaned Morgans. I didnt know what to look for but I soon learned from this forum. Alot of you guys are like mentors to me. I learned most of my knowledge about coins from you all. I got to talking more and more. Now days I wont hardly shut up. I got to looking on EBAY and starting buying alot of modern stuff. Several W quarters, proofs, ASEs, etc. Then I was talking to a very good friend I met on here through personal messaging. He was trying to help me in my collecting by giving me good advice. He told me some of his mistakes and was teaching me how not to make some of the same ones. He told me modern stuff is ok but if I wanted to pass on a special collection to my kids it would be great to have some diversity. Said I didnt have to collect very old coins that are out of my budget but try and collect some that are a little older than what I was thats still affordable to my strict budget. I always loved the older design Washington quarters before the state quarters took over. I decided I was going to assemble a set of 1932 thru 1964 silver Washingtons. I made him a promise I was gonna complete a set and I intend on keeping it. He never made me promise him. It was something I done on my own. He inspired me to work on that set more than he knows. Its been a challenge. I didnt know what I was getting into but that has made it very fun. Ive learned alot of lessons working on that set. I learned not all ms66 coins are created equally. Some are very ugly and some are very lusterous and attractive. I hurried and was trying to fill slots like crazy at first. Then my friend help me understand its better to take your time and find coins you will bd happy with later. I understand that now that Im over halfway through the set. I got some I regret very much. I hope to replace them one of these days. I learned to have patience and wait on that perfect coin that I will be happy to pass on to my kids. Ive got some true beauties in the set. Also some ugly ducklings and everything in between. Im very proud of my set so far even though its not the greatest out there. I have to settle for some low grade coins for my key dates. I want MS coins in the whole set but I just cant afford the key dates. We are a two job working family that lives from paycheck to paycheck. My kids will still be happy with them when I pass them on. They are very grateful boys. Very good kids. You never know, something may happen one of these days where I can get better key dates. I never give up on hope. And if I dont Im still grateful. I used the registry as a guide on how to put the set together. This is getting long. You all are probably getting tired of my rambling on. I will end it here for now so I dont burn everyone out. Ill post more later on other things I like to collect. Such as the Franklin set Ive had the honor of working on with my youngest son. But this covered my main interest in the hobby. For now anyways. There are others Id like more but they are way older and out of my budget.
  8. PART: 2 Skip to a few years later we were at a local flea market and there was an old veteran in there selling coins. He didnt really have no valuable coins. He just sold raw circulated coins mostly. A few bu coins. Nothing spectacular. He said he was retired and he just done it to have something to do. I got very interested and made a purchase. About $20 worth of buffalo nickels and indian heads. The bug hit me and I had to go back. I got to where I was going and spending $20 to $50 every weekend. He got to telling me about the coins I was buying and then got to talking about certified coins and ASEs. Talking about buying from the US Mint and peaked my curiosity. I ended up buying my first ASE from the mint. I didnt know they were considered bullion. I thought you pretty much had to slab them because all the ones I seen on the internet. I ended up researching how to do it and then commited to joing NGC. I submitted my first coin. A 2019 S ASE. I got to looking at all the cool things on NGC and then found this forum. Then covid hit and the old man I made good friends with quit coming to the flea market. Havent seen him since.
  9. PART 1: My dad had a few old junk drawer coins while I was young growing up. He wasnt really a collector. He just save back a few wheaties, buffalos, indian cents, etc. Nothing special. All heavily circulated and damaged. I still found them interesting. I really thought he had something in that tin. I didnt know anything about coins. I would always check our change for wheat cents. I would get all excited to find one. I had to make sure I told mom and dad about it and proudly add it to the tin with the others. I didnt know anything about key dates or anything. I thought they were all special. After examining them years later they were mostly all common ones. That was the very beginning for me.
  10. Thats pretty interesting that you got to help with the innovation dollars. My sons and I really enjoy that series. We collect both the proofs and reverse proofs. I wish they would have kept the RPs in the same type of packaging they first started in. Selling them seprate in the package with all the cool facts wrote on them. I guess it must have been covid that made them sell them all in one plastic case like the regular proofs.
  11. Thank you everyone. I really enjoy reading your stories. Im glad this thread got some responses. Feel free to share anything about your collection at any time. If you get a new coin and want to share a little bit of information and some neat history about it, I would love to hear it. Im sure several others would to. Come back and post as many times as you like. My story is a little long. Ill wait till I get in from work to share it. My collection has took many turns. Ill do them in parts so the post wont be to long. Hope its not to boring for everyone.
  12. I want to make a thread that will be interesting and help get to know each others areas of collecting. It would really be fun and educational to others to read the replies from everyone. You can post anything you want about what you collect, what inspired you to collect those types, what you like about them, also some fun facts about them. Any kinds of facts about your types of coins would be great. Such as the composition, mintages, historical facts, etc. I hope this thread dosent slowly get buried at the bottom of the list. I hope it keeps growing and we can keep it going. Come back anytime you like and add anything about what your into. Even if you decide to get into something new it would be great to add what your learning. I think if people contributes to this thread it would be educational and alot of fun to learn about different types and denominations of coins from the collectors of them. Also helps to learn more about each other. Just please try not to put others down for what they collect and try not to argue. It ruins it for everyone when people start arguing back and forth for 2 or 3 pages. This thread is for anyone who wants to contribute to it. It may inspire others to collect types they never thought about collecting before. I want to add that a good friend who Ive learned alot from inspired me to start this thread. Hes the main reason why I decided to collect in my main area of the hobby. Ive always been curious about others main areas of collecting. The time Ive been a member of this forum Ive learned alot of members main interest. I would like to learn about more members and also more about the ones I already know. It dont have to be your main interest. It can be your smallest sets that you still like. Hopefully some new collectors can get some value from this thread. Even more expirenced collectors may get some value from it. Its open for anyone.
  13. It would be an honor. I just hope people will contribute to it and it dosent get buried somewhere at the bottom of the list. Ill think on it tonight and think of how to word it to make people more intrested in it. Thank you my good friend.
  14. My youngest son and I found another for our set. He likes those rim toners. Its exciting getting to put this set together with him. PCGS MS64 FBL
  15. Thats a wonderful idea. I would really enjoy reading everyones responses. I would enjoy contributing to a thread like that also. I wrote why I took an intrest in quarters in the introduction of my registry set. Never found a thread on it in the actual forum. I always wondered why the members on here chose their favorite coins to collect and how they got started and so on.
  16. Very beautiful coins gentlemen. I cant wait until I get to own my first gold coin. Looking at all those beauties is giving me the fever.
  17. Hes got some really nice ones competing in the registry. I usually take a look at em every once in a while. I would love to add a couple to my collection one of these days. They are a very attractive coin in my opinion.
  18. I decided on trying to assemble a set of SMS cameos. Gonna start with 1967 and see how it goes before I try 65 or 66. This is my first coin in the set so far. Not got it in hand yet. These are the sellers pics.
  19. Wishing the best for you Hoopster. It was a pleasure getting to know you and learn from your post.
  20. I was looking through my raw quarters and found this 1963 DDO. I dont think its worth submitting. It wouldnt grade very high. It has quite a bit of chatter. Still a neat find. Gonna keep it in the coin flip its in. Its a match to FS 101 on NGCs variety plus.
  21. I dont envy no one. I dont understand why you would post a comment like this. If he did have a true doubled die Id be happy for him. Im just not seeing it by the pictures provided. Can you look at the pictures of the coin and honestly say you see a true dd? I dont see no envy in any of the comments posted. All I see is people trying to help him and save him some money because if he submits it I think hes going to be disappointed. Were definately not going to lie to him and tell him the coin is something its not just to make him feel better. If it is one I cant see it in the picture. All I see is the split plate doubling mentioned above. Ive literally looked through thousands of lincoln cents and that is very common on the zinc ones. Sometimes it can be pretty dramatic. But dont sit there and think that I envy anyone. Im happy when good things happen for people.
  22. Those are great finds JP. Im still looking for my first. Ive went through enough cents to cross my eyes and still nothing. I need to go get me a roll or two out there where pigeonman gets his.
  23. I also look through my change for varieties and things. Im not expecting to get rich. I mostly do it for fun and for a pass time. Ive been at it a few years and Ive only found 1 true DDO cent. Its nothing valuable and special but still a fun find. Good coin flip coin. Also found a couple spitting eagle quarters. Found another die clash on a 1966 quarter thats pretty cool. Still nothing valuable. Just some fun coins for coin flips. I enjoy looking through my change. I pretty much know Im not gonna strike it rich. I laugh everytime I see those videos pop up. I actually completely quit clicking on them because most Ive seen is garbage.
  24. That must have been a spot on the camera or something. The coin is almost flawless in hand. Theres no spot at all looking at it in hand.
