  1. @Dascher I haven’t been on here for awhile nice see someone else collecting some German coinage…  As a German coin collector myself . I been at it pretty much for whole 10 years , I did collect here and there in past on German coins not a lot … But I dumped my whole US coins coin collection switched over strictly pretty much German coins …. I see a lot “error” German coins , they really aren’t worth that much at all unlike US error coins that’s more of a “fad” for US coins not so much for world coins

  2. You got any pictures of these off brand slabs ? As novice collector just getting into the hobby be very wary buying coins in slabs there’s a lot of “basement” slabbers out there who slab their own coins for a quick payout it’s like Cancer! Spreading into our coin collecting hobby us older collectors know all about them however they prey on novice collectors these coins are basic “pocket change” put in holder with a goofy graded paper in holder looks like printer ran out of ink couldn’t even print paper and grade properly (I get it novice collectors see the prices is cheaper so they buy it)  …. Some of the old old slabbed stuff is either a hit or miss like PCI slabbed coins ! If you don’t know how see cleaned coins , problem coins and so not you know how properly grade coins yourself… PCGS and NGC can or would grade them out as detailed problem coins … in the end you’ll be disappointed but a lesson to learn from …

so take some pictures of the slabbed coins you have a few members can give you better information if coin is worth sending off or not …

the differential between a 70 and 69 for Moderns

I don’t have Superman eyes I wouldn’t be able tell difference between 69-70 grade on silver eagles … I believe the grader put blindfolds on just picks out some random silver eagle out of a bunch and says this one will be the “mighty one” that will get 70 grade! What about all the rest ? 69ers!!!! probably didn’t even look at them HA! … Would you like to be the grader that looks at a monster boxes of silver eagles every year?  Each one after another ? I wouldn’t it  sounds pretty boring looking at huge shipment of “nearly perfect coins” that are not really made for circulation and made on state of the art modern minting presses … I can see MS68 or MS67 for having Milkspots other than the “strike” is usually bold ! It’s fully struck well on Silver eagles …

What is the attraction of DCAM and Ultra Cameo coins in terms of price, value, and grade or is it just eye appeal and/ or  personal preference ?

Both mean they same thing … DCAM is used by PCGS , UC is used by NGC…. Now if you we are talking about Morgan dollars or some other series where there is PL and DPL (NGC) and PCGS uses PL and DMPL there’s a big difference in grades and price ranges

...i suspect the seller knows its too high....

I’m curious where NGC got their newer price in MS63 at $450 ? Recent auction prices doesn’t even come close to that ! I believe seller is going by NGC price guide … is there a demand for this type of coin ? From time to time there is but I don’t see how price could of spiked up that high … I sure wouldn’t pay that price for MS65 when I can get one bidding even in higher grade MS66 or MS67 …But I would rather own a rarer proof grade of this particular coin which I see very few of up for auction from time to time

  6. Here’s an example how a novice could of “overpaid” on a coin MS 65 at $450??? I don’t think so !!! Heck MS67 was auctioned off at $288 and $360 respectively (however NGC price guide shows MS63 at $450) anyone could of easily overpaid on this if they did not do their homework and look up what auction prices were going for …. I blocked out eBay seller’s name for privacy purposes but they are reputable dealer I’ll have to send them an email let them know they have that coin priced way way too high where they got price tag value at ? I have no idea it’s not a “rare coin” in fact quiet easy to find , it’s a commemorative 3 mark from the weimar republic years in Germany

...absolutely agree, many price lists of foreign issues r completely absent of any relationship to what actually exists in the real world...prices, mintages, actual existence or references to any recent transactions....

Very true , a lot of world coin prices and information is out of date hard to keep up with …. I have old old John S. Davenport catalog printed 1949 on German Talers (thalers) as some spell it in English but in Germany it’s “Talers” they have price list from 1959 in back of my catalog they were getting a lot Talers back then for $2 a pop ! Some of them I can’t find on market anymore today … I also have German Krause catalog devoted entirely for German coins only from 1600-present all prices in there are very old as well but good reference … these days I guess I may have over paid for certain coins in my collection simply because I could not go by old catalog pricing nor could I go by NGC prices either … where these wacky prices come from ? I have no idea the collectors market is not that huge in world coins although gradually growing these days compared to 30-40 years ago or even 20-10 years ago I rely on vast of prices on MA-shop and current bidding prices from auctions to determine “ball park” on current prices for a particular coin I want for my collection … It’s really frustrating some days trying to determine pricing on certain world coins when there is no information really available!

I see some stuff going crazy, like there are a lot of people that have no clue what they are bidding on?

That’s one of the reason I stop bidding on Morgan dollars a long while back always some yuppie comes along and bids it up super high …Morgans are plentiful I can take anyone to a coin show 300 dealer’s tables there will Morgans galore on every dealer’s table no lie ! they are so common when you leave the coin show you’ll have what they call afterimages from staring at Morgans all day ….

Yes I get upset when I am bidding on a coin that only has a value of $30 and the BP is $31. Before I even bid they want 101%

Heritage auctions changed a lot over the years they used to be better more friendly average Joe could collect nice coins without all mumble jumbo stuff …Now a days I only use them for reference on auction prices here and there … Every once in a while I might return to do some live bidding on coins that I haven’t seen show up on market for long while or that are harder to find in nicer grades for a particular coin or medal I’m looking for in my collection (which is rare occasion mostly world coins)  I do see nicer graded coins and medals on heritage auctions VS what I see on GC “lower quality graded coins” from what I see in German coins and medals sector … But yeah either way you go the 20% BP on heritage auction can be brutal! you to have watch how you bid as @World Colonial mentioned in his comment … Few times I’ve gotten caught up in bidding wars luckily I backed out in time before hammer fell the higher bidder won weeks later had coin up for best offer… We gotta watch the consigners and Heritage auction can bid on their own coins driving the prices up wacky high which is perfectly legal but unethical… always set limit your willing to pay (with BP and shipping , taxes)  and stick with it and try not to have a bidding war and wind up way way over your budget limit it’s not worth it ! Only sound advice I can give anyone on here just getting into the hobby on live bidding sites…

  10. @Hoghead515 long time we since chatted on here good to see you’re still around buddy , have you tried consigning them with a dealer ? In past I’ve consigned my US coin collection when I was getting out of US coins and switching to World coins … It took the dealer awhile to sell off most of my coins in end it all panned out I wasn’t in a quick hurry to get my profit this dealer traveled a lot to different coin shows it helped liquidate it off …. Unless you’re in a bind need money or something quickly Auctions are your best GC is nice but most of the coins I’ve seen on there were low ball bidding nothing super rare or anything unlike heritage auction but their Buyer premiums scare some bidders away 20% that’s super high (not to mention high shipping cost as well) …. GC has lower buyer premium 12% or something I believe fee is free to nothing to sell on GC ? I could be wrong … I believe eBay has Seller premium 12% that’s why I see a lot coins on eBay marked up high for a seller to cover that cost

I collect some German coins, and if I am looking for information on them I usually check out the Numista.com (https://en.numista.com/catalogue) and uCoin, net (https://en.ucoin.net/catalog) sites to see if they have the info I am looking for.

Thanks for the links … yes I have used Numista for information also, the second link you sent me I have used that one sparsely in past I forgotten about that link been long while since I checked out that one . Thanks again I’ll be saving that information for future reference.

  12. We call them basement slabbers, wannabes who want to be like the big brothers NGC and PCGS but they’ll never be that good mostly common date cheap coins that are easy to find wind up in these knock off slabs. ANACS (with its newer ugly holders) is the lowest I’ll go when buying a graded coin only on rare occasion I’ll settle for an old white ANACS holder (which I believe they were very conservative graded back then)  and ICG looks like a basement slabber I avoid them

  13. I myself been collecting a lot of German coinage for last few year ,since my heritage is from Baden Germany . I find information on German medals rather difficult to look up on the US market written in English and if there is a book or an old catalog ? It cost tons and tons , lately I been buying some old catalog here and there on German coins for my library I do prefer to rely on hard copies than to just look stuff up online …

If anyone likes german Talers ? I recommend buying John S. Davenport book series (catalog) on German Talers very enjoyable book to to own and read over although the books can be a little pricey here and there but there is some good deals out there

@RWB it been awhile since I been back on here , but I always enjoy your wealth of knowledge on history you remind me of my old history teacher back in High school

Jason i, personally buy anything from TV sheisters, but was demonstating the cost of $13 for a 1964 Kennedy. Although the one I was given is a fine example, it would probably struggle to get an MS65. A nice keeper though.

I got it man the HSN guy is funny all the time I see him if he was so great he would be moving and selling coins at the coin shows like crazy but he’s not  … Me personally I was never fascinated by Kennedy halves although I’ve seen some nice examples that graded out MS67 and MS68 but there literally spotless they look they were just busted out of a original bank roll …. I’ve also see few unopened original wrapped bank rolls of 1964 Kennedy halves  they carry high price tag for some reason probably due to folks trying to get that MS67 or 68 grade which I’ve seen very few of it’s a long shot and risk I wouldn’t buy a whole roll just for the purpose tho .

HSN ? really ? That would be last place on earth I would ever tell anyone to even think about purchasing a coin for their collection …. Keep in mind I see a lot folks selling coins everywhere even on eBay with wacky prices doesn’t mean anyone is buying it ! The latest Bid and auction prices are the only prices I really rely on from a buyer perspective when buying certain types of coins I need for my collection I may make offers here and there but I never ever go by someone’s high ridiculous selling prices I don’t care how rare they think it is or the rainbow toning and other that jacks up an imaginary price for a “common”  coin I want to buy for my collection. That’s why a lot coins remain “unsold” due to high prices only a smart collector would know NOT to pay

They have some very cool designs. I really like them alot. Im maybe thinking about trying to piece together a set of some kind. I really like the half marks. Im still undecided how im gonna go still yet. Be a little while down the road. Gonna focus on the US set Im working on for a while.

Some of the mid years 1912,1913 are scarce come with higher price tag for higher grades even lower grade is a little pricey , then we have 1908F which is very scarce in that series any grade is high price tag for 1908F 1/2 mark probably the hardest one to get for that series. Although the Earlier years and later years are much easier to find.

@Hoghead515Welcome to German coin collecting, if you ever get your hands on a Krause German coin catalog 1600- present  . You’ll be drooling in that book is thicker than a telephone book ! Just so many German coins and history in that book you’d be impressed … Since I started collecting German coins 10 years ago I haven’t looked back that’s all I mostly collect now a days

Ill have to give that a try.

@Hoghead515 I’ve also used my drill press no lie ! The table moves up and down it has light attached to upper part of the drill press I found LED natural light bulbs work best for me if there too much glare , I’ll wrap and tape a solid white printing paper over the bulb to dim it a little it works well for me

I been thinking about making a bracket that mounts to the shaft of the drill press mounted with a digital camera , the table moves up and down for height might have to add addition lights I haven’t gotten around to messing with it yet . Work in progress someday

  19. @Taler TalesI came back because I forgotten to mention when it comes to Thaler coinage they were like a very large silver dollar at that time mostly probably circulated among the richer people back then since the poorer were not able to obtain a Thaler . I’m sure you might know the difference between a “duchy” was state that formed a allegiance with larger kingdom together . As “Grand duchy” was a state that was ruled and more independent on its own . They all had different thalers at that time with different denomination based on their wealth within their respective states at that time before they all became a larger kingdom which enter the “German empire era” only one Grand dutchy remains today that is Luxembourg
